Getting to know the Generational Curriculum

Yvette Aqui's Report 4: Analysis of the Generational Curriculum

A)

Yvette explains what the generational curriculum is and how to use it. She explains that it was Designed for the different psychology classes taught by Dr. James Leon. It is a community that will keep on growing throughout the years. Students in the past and those who come in the future are all apart of this community. Each person will contribute to the knowledge and growth to this community.

Yvette also describes how this site is set up and ways to use it. She talks about using a "Tour Guide" approach to setting up our pages so that it is easier for the viewer to find what they are looking for. Their are many links in each of our pages and it is a good idea to bookmark each so if you get lost you have a reference area to get back to. If you are having trouble going through all these reports take a look at this one. You might find it helpful.

Dan Hamamoto's Report 4: Analysis of the Generational Curriculum

Dan describes the Generational Curriculum(GC) as a super document. It is not just a report that someone can come and look at. It is a cyber community that people can come visit. Everyone in the community adds knowledge to it. The younger generations learn and grow from the knowledge of the older generations and so on. He mentions that each generation is labeled with a number suggesting that it will keep on growing.

Dan also mentions how it is set up like a tour group. This makes it easier for a visitor who is essentially a tourist to locate and learn about the GC. He personally does not like it because like a tour group you don't have the freedom to go wherever you want. It guides you along and limits your options. However for a visitor it would be very helpful.

B)

The Generation 6 students of the psy 459 class have done reports describing the 18 links of Leon James home page. I have found that their descriptions of the links were very close to my own descriptions. I have found a few ideas or comments that I could use to better my own report on the exploration of the Generational Curriculum. I hope that future generations find my report just as helpful as I found some of the G6's reports.

History look on the Generational Curriculum

The generation curriculum are made up of the reports done by students who have taken courses from Dr. Leon James. These classes and reports started in the 1970s' and are still being done by his current students even as we speak. These reports are in a section on Dr. Leon James Home Page called the DRA or Daily Round Archives. You can read all the reports and see how the generations have evolved over time.

It is amazing because at the beginning the students doing the reports didn't have access to the Web or even to computers. All their reports were typed out and bounded for future reference. Now they are being slowly inputed onto the Web by some of Dr. James' current students. You can read them in the DRA at his home page.

This article deals with different perspectives about the World Wide Web and cyber-homes called Home Pages. Dr. James explains that a persons home page is kind of like a home away from home. It is a place you can go to where you feel comfortable and safe. It is like a get away. He goes on to explain that their are 2 ways to look at it. The first way is an external view, that of data and marketing and other buisness aspects. The second way, that in which he himself views the web, is an internal view. This internal view is that of the active Net user. A person that enjoys the web and works constantly to make his or her pages as good as they can get and then some. It is like someone fixing up their home so that when they have visitors they won't be embarrassed.

I think that this is true. I haven't quite got the hang of making a home page but I would like my home page to look at least neat. I don't want it to be all over the place and messier than someone elses home page. When a person visits my page I want them to be suprised and think to themselves that if they had a home page they would want it to look like this. I havn't gotten to that point yet but I am still learning and eventually I will be able to make a home page that meet my standards.

Roseanne Ancog's and Glen Acietro's report 2

Both of these two previous generation students talk about how they are inexperienced at making web pages. They both are unsure of how it works and if they will be able to do the same things that the previous generations were able to do. I know how they feel because I am not sure what I am doing. People always say that because I am a newer generation, my page is supposed to look better than those before me. I don't think that this is true. No matter what generation you are from you have to learn how it works. Eventually everyone is able to make a good home page but it does take some time.

Both of these students were able to learn what makes a good home page from a bad one. They give a few tips that I have found to be very useful. One of them is that apperance is very important. They type of background you choose and the type of pictures you put on your page. They warn you not to put too many pictures because it takes a while for them to upload. Time is a big part of having a good home page. No one likes to wait for a long while just because a picture is being uploaded.

Both Roseanne and Glen were able to make really nice home pages. I feel more confident knowing that others felt the way I feel and they have succeeded in creating a good home page.

Mining the Generational Curriculum

TheGenerational Curriculum is a gigantic storage of information. It has all of the reports and information that has been done by all the generations. The problem is that it is still growing and will continue to grow. It is tough to look through all this information and find what you are looking for. That is why need to know where to look. I suggest that you take a tour of the Gc so that you know more about where things are. Another way to know more about the GC is to look at a map of it. These are some suggestions on how to mine the GC for information.

The GC is still growing and a few problems for navigating may arise. Problems such as repetitiveness because we all are building up on the generations before us. We go over the same material that previous generations have already gone over and in time it takes up a lot of wasted space. It would be a great thing if we were able to combine all of the reports into one big report so that all you would have to do is read one report instead of hundreds of reports that basically cover the same thing. There is going to be such a wide selection that the generations to come won't even be able to see them all. I think that one day someone will come up with something like this and it will make mining the generation curriculem much faster and easier.

World Information Bank

In order to talk about something one must have a brief knowledge about it. Please click here for a brief intro and then click on the back button to return here. I think that this was a good attempt to make something so that you could see where everything was in the GC. It is a difficult task to ask of anyone. I feel that in order to make something worth wild you would have to spend a whole semester just working on something like this. It just needs to be very detailed and to do this it takes time. If it isn't detailed then it wont be much help to anyone.

Conclusion and Recommendations

I think that Quincy had a great idea about getting a tree to see where you have gone so you don't get lost in all the links. This could be a big problem, especially if you start jumping from page to page, you tend to forget where you have gone and end up looking over the same material over again.

I am expecting the future generations to come upon the problems that I have talked about. The problems with mining the GC because of large amounts of information. I predict that they will come up with a way to make it easier to mine the GC. If they don't then a lot of information will be lost or unused. This would be ashame because of all the effort the past generations have put in. I would like to think that the past generations work will always be used. The future needs to make sure that the past is not forgoten.

My suggestion to future generations is to look over the past generations and see what type of mistakes and problems they have made. They sometimes have solutions for the problems that they have had. This will save you some time and help you avoid the mistakes that they have made before. I know that I have learned a lot from past generations and it has helped me get through this course. Just don't give up and keep trying.
