Search for Les Murakami using Yahoo!

1. Day, Date and Place Saturday, December 6, 1997 at home
2. Mood or affective state I am in a good mood and not rushed. I am looking forward to a baseball game that I have this afternoon so I am awake and ready to do some searching.
3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Yahoo!
b) I have used the Yahoo search engine many times before and it is my favorite search engine.
c) I like it because it was easy to use. Right when I opened Yahoo, I immediately saw a bracket that indicate search topic, which is where I typed in my search topic. I also like it because I have always been able to find what I am looking for with out much problems.
4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Les Murakami because I would like to find out some information on how he got his status as being one of the elite coaches in the nation. I also would like some background on him.
b) No it does not contain Boolean constrictor because it is a name and I dont feel that I needs to have a Boolean constrictor.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 2-3 hits on him he is only a college coach and I don't think that their are many articles on him. Maybe one on his background and a couple about his trip to the college world series.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only about 15,083 hits. Those that were relevent for my search was 1. I was pretty close.
7. Reaction to 5/6 Again it did not treat his name as one name. It separated it and gave me all the pages with either Les or Murakami. Their is also other people with the same name who have pages written about them.
8. Evaluation of hits The hits that they presented to me first was of another Les Murakami but the second page described Les Murakami as the head coach of the baseball team. So it wasn't hard to find information about him. Actually it was really fast. The page talked about how he became the UH Baseball teams head coach and how he built the program to the status that it is today. It had his career records and the wins that made him one of the elite coaches in the nation.

Search for Les Murakami using Infoseek

1. Day, Date and Place Saturday, December 6, 1997 at home
2. Mood or affective state I have a lot of time to do this research and it is an interesting topic so I am happy that I get to do something that interests me as well as complete part of my assignment.
3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Infoseek
b) I have used this search engine before.
c) I found it to be really good when you are looking up information on something or somebody. However, it is not as good as the other web site when you are just looking up more general topics.
4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Les Murakami because this is what I typed in when I did my other search and I want to try and keep it consistent.
b) No it does not contain Boolean constrictor because I want to see if it will break up the name or keep it as one.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 2-3 hits because Infoseek usually doesn't break up the name of a person.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were 28 pages.
7. Reaction to 5/6 The Infoseek did not break up his name. I am not too suprised that their is more information on him in this search engine because this is the search engine that usually has biographys on famous people. You can't get much more famous than Coach Les Murakami in Hawaii.
8. Evaluation of hits I think that their is a lot more pages on Les Murakami. It contained the same page that the Yahoo search engine gave me plus it had some newspaper articles on him and some other pages with interesting information on him. I think that for this type of research the Infoseek is the search engine to choose.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I think that my mood helped with the search. I am glad that I had the time to go through the different pages to see what each had to offer. Each did posses something different for the reader to learn.
b) ) I think that because I was interested in the subject it made it a lot more interesting and fun.
c) No, I was able to find the material that I was looking for really quickly with out using the help command.

Search for Delta Sky Miles using Yahoo!

1. Day, Date and Place Monday, December 1, 1997 at Baseball Stadium
2. Mood or affective state I have just finished baseball practice and waiting for the laundry to finish. I am not in any rush; I feel relaxed and pretty happy about how the day went.
3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Yahoo!
b) I have used the Yahoo search engine many times before and it is my favorite search engine.
c) I like it because it was easy to use. Right when I opened Yahoo, I immediately saw a bracket that indicate search topic, which is where I typed in my search topic. I also like it because I have always been able to find what I am looking for with out much problems.
4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Delta Skymiles because I just recieved my Delta Skymiles card and wanted to see if all the miles I loged on last year was inputed into their records. I hope that it doesn't take to long because their is also a number I could call if I wanted to check up on my skymiles but I am hoping that this method will be faster and easier.
b) No it does not contain Boolean constrictor because I didn't feel that it was necessary.
c) Yes, it was a first response.
5. # of expected hits I am hoping to get 1 exact hit but because Delta is a airlines their might be more than one department for the skymiles. In that case I am expecting around 40-50 hits.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only about 50,302 hits.
7. Reaction to 5/6 I am very suprised at how many hits I recieved. By looking at the first 20 hits I got I see that all of them have the words "Delta Skymiles". It talks about all the different aspects of the skymiles plan. I guess this is what I expected but maybe not to this extent. Their are bonus miles, corperate credit cards, etc.
8. Evaluation of hits I choose to look at the first choice they gave me to see if their #1 suggestion was what I was looking for. Their is a section called skylinks. This where you can get information on your account balances. This is what I was looking for. They sent me to a secure page so that the information I got would not be seen by anyone else. This page showed me exactly what I was looking for. The first choice they gave me was the one that I was looking for. I checked some of the other choices and found that it was related and had useful information on the topic I was looking for.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I think my mood did affect my search in that because I was relaxed I was able to go through some of the hits without feeling pressure that I only have a few minutes so I need to choose the right section. Normaly if I was in a rush and I got that many hits I might have felt some stress and anxiety.
b) Yes, I felt that the topic was straight forward and should not be very hard to find. I did a straight search like I normaly do and it worked out fine.
c) No, this is the part that I forgot to do, looking at HELP documents. I am not sure that it would have helped with this search because I had good control over the topic and was able to find it really fast and easily.

Search for Delta Sky Miles using Infoseek

1. Day, Date and Place Monday, December 1, 1997 at Baseball Stadium
2. Mood or affective state Very happy because I was able to find what I was looking for in the Yahoo search engine. I want to compare which one is better or if it makes a difference.
3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Infoseek
b) This is the first time I am using Infoseek.
c) I like it because it was easy to use. Right when I opened Infoseek, I immediately saw a bracket that indicate search topic, which is where I typed in my search topic. It took a couple of seconds for another screen to appear and this contained information that I was looking for. If there are too many hits, you can scroll down to the bottom where there is another bracket that indicate new search or search these results. If you add another word here, you can search this word with the original word or statement you typed in.
4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Delta Skymiles because I just recieved my Delta Skymiles card and wanted to see if all the miles I loged on last year was inputed into their records. I hope that it doesn't take to long because their is also a number I could call if I wanted to check up on my skymiles but I am hoping that this method will be faster and easier.
b) No it does not contain Boolean constrictor because I didn't feel that it was necessary.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 50,000 because when I made the same search in Yahoo I got about 50,000 hits.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only about 173 pages.
7. Reaction to 5/6 My reactions was that I expected a lot more hits because in the other search engine I found a little over 50,000 hits. This one seems to be more precise to what I was looking for..
8. Evaluation of hits Well, at first I thought that this search engine was not as good as Yahoo. However, after I started looking at the pages that it gave to me I noticed that the reason it gave me less pages was because it narrowed it down to the more precise documents that I was looking for. The problem is that I am not sure which page to go to. None of these specifically tell me where I can find the Delta Skymiles page or where I can find out my skymiles information. I took a guess and luckly found what I was looking for. It was basically the same page that I found using Yahoo.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I don't think my mood influenced my search in this one because I was in a good mood but when it didn't show me what I was looking for I started to get fustrated. I think my expectation had more to do with my feelings toward this search than anything else.
b) Yes, I felt that the topic was straight forward and should not be very hard to find. I did a straight search like I normaly do and it worked out fine.
c) No, this is the part that I forgot to do, looking at HELP documents. I am not sure that it probably would have helpedin this search engine to maybe give me more information on each page.

Search for Roy Sakuma using Yahoo!

1. Day, Date and Place Tuesday, December 2, 1997 at UH baseball stadium
2. Mood or affective state Very tired because I had just finished work and it's really late and I really want to go home and relax.
3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Yahoo!
b) I have used the Yahoo search engine many times before and it is my favorite search engine.
c) I like it because it was easy to use. Right when I opened Yahoo, I immediately saw a bracket that indicate search topic, which is where I typed in my search topic. I also like it because I have always been able to find what I am looking for with out much problems.
4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Roy Sakuma because just to see if I can find anything on him or his ukulele studio.
b) No it does not contain Boolean constrictor because it is a name of a person and it should treat it that way.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 10 hits because I dont think that their are many articles about him on the web, at least not yet. However I do expect to find out information about how I can start ukulele lessons at his studios.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only about 95,652 hits.
7. Reaction to 5/6 I didn't expect this many hits. The search engine took at as two words and gave me any information with either "Roy" or "Sakuma". I should have used a boolean constrictor. I think quotation marks would have shortened this list. The first 8 hits I got however are about Roy Sakuma. I guessed 10 so I was not that far off.
8. Evaluation of hits All of the hits I got were about the Annual Ukulele festival that he puts on every year or the CD's he has produced over the years. None of these hits gave me any information on how to start taking lessons at his studio. This is a big disappointment.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I think it did, I just wanted to go home so I wanted to leave as soon as I can. Instead of making my search more specific,to narrow down the seaches. I just stopped. I think if I was more awake and had more energy I would have continued my search and I think I could have been able to find something.
b) I don't think the topic influenced my search at all. I think that my mood had everything to do with it.
c) No, I was not in the mood to go hunting through the help section to look for information on this topic..

Search for Roy Sakuma using Infoseek

1. Day, Date and Place Tuesday, December 2, 1997 at baseball stadium
2. Mood or affective state Very tired because I had just finished work and I really want to go home and relax.
3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Infoseek
b) This is my 2nd or 3rd time using infoseek.
c) From past experiences it was not as clear on the description of the page as Yahoo is. Yahoo is much clearer and infoseek gives you parts of the page instead of an over view of the page.
4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Roy Sakuma That is the main subject I am looking for.
b) No it does not contain Boolean constrictor it is a name of a person and that is what I typed in when I searched in Yahoo.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 10,000 because it will probably give me all the titles of the pages with either Roy or Sakuma.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only 3.
7. Reaction to 5/6 Obviously Infoseek searched it as a name and did not break it up like Yahoo did. I think this is good because it gives me only the pages I was looking for and I don't have to scroll through hundreds of pages to find what I am looking for or realize that they do not have what I am looking for.
8. Evaluation of hits This is a much easier search than the last one I did in Yahoo. Their is still no information about lessons. The 3 articles are from the star bulletin talking about the Ukulele festival again and an article on him. I am glad that I did not have to scroll through many pages to find out that their is no information on lessons. This saved my some time and headache.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I think it did, I just wanted to go home so I wanted to leave as soon as I can. Because I was tired I was happy that their was only a few pages that I had to search through to find out that their was no information. I am happy that it did not take up to much time.
b) No, I think that my mood played a big part in my search. If I was not so tired I might have tried a couple other searches to find what I was looking for or some related topics.
c) No, I was too tired and didn't feel like it would help me find what I was looking for.

3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Yahoo!
b) I have used the Yahoo search engine many times before and it is my favorite search engine.

4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Disneyland+vacations because after I graduate I want to plan a vacation to Disneyland and I want to findout some prices or if their is any discounts I can take advantage of right now.
b) In this search I used a boolean so I could narrow down the search. I did not want any information on other vacation information. I just wanted those pertaining to Dineyland.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 10,000 because I thought there were many different travel agencies offering different deals on a trip to Disneyland.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only 3 sites for Disneyland Vacations.
7. Reaction to 5/6 My reactions was that I expected a lot more hits Disneyland gets so many visitors each year that I thought that their would be much more information or deals offered. Maybe The boolean constrictor made the search only those that put Disneyland and Vacations together. This could have really limited my options.
8. Evaluation of hits This search gave me 3 sites that has no information on travel plans. I can't find any prices or any information on the hotels that I may stay at. I am very disappointed with this search. I definitely expected to find at least a couple of travel ideas.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I think the search affected my mood more than my mood affected my search.
b) My expectations got in the way of the search again. I was expecting to find a lot of information on Disneyland Vacations and I couldn't find anything. In this respect I think that my topic influenced my search and my mood.
c) I just went through all the different links to find what I was looking for and I couldn't find anything. Funny I am kinda against using the help menu. I find myself feeling that it is more work to use the help menu that to just look through the document myself.

3. a) Search engine??
b) Number of times used?
c) Like or dislike?
a) Infoseek
b) I have used infoseek a few time before.
c)It's good because it gives you a more specific range of pages. I noticed that it gives you less of the stuff that you are not looking for.
4. a) Search statement used. Why?
b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Disneyland+vacations because it gave me a good search last time and I want a specific search and I don't want to have to scroll through more searches then I have to. I am kinda in a rush.
b) It does contain a boolean constrictor. This is to make the search more specific.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 1,000 hits because I still think that Disneyland vacations should be a topic that many travel agencies offer.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only about 412,284 hits.
7. Reaction to 5/6 My reactions was that the boolean constrictor did not work or that infoseek uses different boolean operators. I will just continue with this search and see what I can find. I guess many of the different search engines use different boolean operators and you must keep a list of all of them.
8. Evaluation of hits Infoseek gives me more options to what I am looking for. It has more deals for me to choose from and from different companies. It gives me a discription of all the hotels I can choose from, tours available and different travel packeges. This is definitely what I was looking for.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I think the search affected my mood more than my mood affected my search.
b) Yes, Disneyland is one of my favorit places to visit and I havn't been their in a long time. I am very excited about planning this trip so while I was doing the search I didn't mind going through the different links to find what I was looking for.

b) Does it contain Boolean? Why or why not?
c) Was it first response?
a) I typed in Hubble+space+telescope because had to do a report on this last semester and it was very interesting. Last semester I used the web to gather information and I was wondering if their was any new information on it.
b) Yes, because I wanted the search engine to find information specifically about the Hubble Space Telescope.
c) Yes, it was my first response.
5. # of expected hits I was expecting around 330 their are many aspects of the Hubble Telescope that had been documented before and I think that it may have grown. I am hoping that the boolean operators limit my search for the information that I am looking for.
6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were 5,642 hits.
7. Reaction to 5/6 I am not too suprised because their are alot of information about the Hubble Space telescope out their.
8. Evaluation of hits Their is a lot of information on the subject and most of it is what I was looking for. I wasn't looking for anything to particular so I just scrolled down and visited some of the sites. Their was some new information on the Telescope but I was only able to read a few of them.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) No, the search was actually relaxing. My mood changed because of the search.
b) Yes, it was a very interesting topic with a lot of information. I enjoyed reading about the new pictures it was sending back to the Earth.

6. # of actual hits The number of actual hits were only about 150, 822.
7. Reaction to 5/6 I expected a large amount. I under calculated my hits because I really didn't take into account how many hits their would be for the other words like Hubble, space, and telescope.
8. Evaluation of hits Even if I got a lot of hits the beginning of the list is the information I was looking for. I feel that the information in infoseek is much more detailed and precise. Their is also a lot more related topics in infoseek.
9. a) Did mood influence searched?
b) Did topic influence search?
c)Used search engine instructions or HELP?
a) I was much more relaxed during this search and I was able to get my mind of my other problems. I think the search again took my mind off of things. I can see why so many people spend to much time on the web.

2. Prior Generational Reports on Search Engines:
Generation 4, Report 3

Shane Cobb-Adams

A) Shane Cobb-Adams, >>Ryan Mitsui, and Ginger Andrews found problems while They were searching the web. Most of their problems was finding exactly what he was looking for. The search engine would search for what he put into the computer but if he put the wrong information in the computer he would get the wrong information. Each of them found the solution to this problem when They visited the "help file or FAQ file to find out more about each search engine. They found that different search engines had different ways of searching for information. Their are things called boolean constrictors to help narrow down your search and find exactly what you are looking for.

B) I found had the same problems as Shane, Ryan, and Ginger did. I would search for a topic and I would get thousands of hits. The problem is that most of the hits were not what I was looking for. I also tried to use some of the boolean constrictors and found the same thing that all three of the G4 students did, that different engines use different boolean constrictors.

3. Conclusion

I gained a lot of knowledge on how to use the search engines. After reading the G4 students reports on search engines I realized that some of the same problems still exist. However, these problems are very simple to solve. If you are willing to take the time and go through some of the search engines and go to the "help" link then it will make future searching much easier. These problems are basically facing the beginners who are just learning to use the search engine like me. However, after a few searches you start to get the hang of it and start to understand how the search engine works. I know that I will use the web to find out information for future reports and this exercise helped me develop the knowledge I need to do this.

The only suggestions that I have for future generations is to look at some of the past generations reports. See what kind of problems they have had and find out how they were able to overcome these problems. Throughout this course I feel that I have learned the most from past generational reports and that they were the things that helped me out the most.

The other thing is to try and search for somthing that you are interested in and do it when you have a lot of time. If you are rushed it makes it hard because it takes some time for the search engines to gather the information and contact certain sites. This may make searching unpleasent for you. Well I just want to say have fun searching the web.
