| 1. Day, date, location | Tuesday evening Nov. 4, 1997 at friend's house. |
|---|---|
| 2. Mood/affective state | Relaxed and content, just finished eating dinner. |
| 3. Search engine, number of times used, whether like it or not, why | The search engine used was Alta Vista and it was the first time I have used it. I liked it because it was easy to use, it lists 10 results at a time with a brief summary of each, how big the document is, when it was put up, and language it is in. Plus there are many tools to help customize your search and tips to make your search more easier. |
| 4. Statement typed in, why chose those words, did it contain Boolean operators, why/why not, and was it a first search or respnse to another | Statement typed in was freediving, no capitals. I chose this statement because I wanted to learn more about it and other's experiences since I am a freediver myself. I didn't include any Boolean operators because when I did, I got results that didn't reflect what I was looking for. So I deleted them from the original statement (freediving and Hawaii) to get more relevant results. |
| 5. Number of expected hits | Expected at least 1000. |
| 6. Number of actual hits | Got only 347. |
| 7. Reactions to #5 & #6 | I couldn't believe there were so little, I thought my prediction would be under the actual. To me, there are plenty of individuals interested in this topic, maybe they just don't have a page up (like me). |
| 8. Evaluation of hits: what proportion were relevant and how found this out | I'd say about 3/4 were relevant. They were considered relevant as long as they contained some information on the topic. I found this out by looking at the titles and summaries of all the results, since there weren't many. |
| 9. How felt about it, did mood influence how I searched, did topic influence search strategy, did make use of engine instructions or help documents, why | I was happy I came up with plenty of relevant hits. Being content made searching more pleasurable, made me more patient. The topic also made the search easy since I found what I was looking for. I looked at the insructions and help document, but didn't use them since I found what I was looking for, maybe next time. |

| 3. Search engine, number of times used, whether like it or not, why | The search engine used wasWebcrawler and this was the first time I have used this engine. I liked this engine because it was also easy to use. It lets you customize the way the results are displayed. You can list 10, 25, or 100 results on a page, you can list the results by title or title and summary. There are also shortcuts given to you, services, and other channels. This is better than Alta Vista. |
| 4. Statement typed in, why chose those words, did it contain Boolean operators, why/why not, and was it a first search or respnse to another | The statement typed in was freediving, no capitals. I chose this statement because I wanted to learn more about it and other's experiences since I am a freediver myself. I didn't include any Boolean operators because I didn't include it in my other search on Alta Vista, and they had to be the same. |
| 5. Number of expected hits | Since there weren't that many on the other search, I expect about 150. |
| 6. Number of actual hits | Yoikers! I expected too much again, only got 35 hits. |
| 7. Reactions to #5 & #6 | Again, I was shocked. I was a little disappointed to see so little results, but it was much more easier to go through all of them. |
| 8. Evaluation of hits: what proportion were relevant and how found this out | Almost all of the results were relevant. Because there were so little results, I was able to go through all of them. I looked at both the titles and summaries and even visited some of the sites. |
| 9. How felt about it, did mood influence how I searched, did topic influence search strategy, did make use of engine instructions or help documents, why | I felt happy I could view all the results, yet disappointed there were so little. Being content made searching more pleasurable, made me more patient. The topic also made the search easy since I found what I was looking for. I looked at the insructions and help document, but didn't use them since I found what I was looking for, maybe next time. |
