| 1. Day, date, location | Tuesday evening Nov. 4, 1997 at friend's house. |
|---|---|
| 2. Mood/affective state | Getting a little tired because it's getting late. |
| 3. Search engine, number of times used, whether like it or not, why | The search engine used wasAlta Vista and this was the second time I have used this engine. I liked it, but not as much as Webcrawler. |
| 4. Statement typed in, why chose those words, did it contain Boolean operators, why/why not, and was it a first search or respnse to another | The statement typed in was bodyboarding, no capitals. I chose this statement because I wanted to see some pages on this topic and read other people's experiences, since I am also a bodyboarder myself. I did not include any Boolean operators because I didn't feel it was necessary for this search, which was a first search. |
| 5. Number of expected hits | Let's say about 1000. |
| 6. Number of actual hits | What, only 628! |
| 7. Reactions to #5 & #6 | I'm speechless. This time I thought my prediction would be under the actual. People just aren't putting up pages I guess. |
| 8. Evaluation of the hits: what proportion were relevant and how found this out | All of them were relevant. All of the results I went through, by looking at the titles and summaries all had something to do about the topic. Again, as long as it contained a little information about it, I considered it relevant. |
| 9. How felt about it, did mood influence how I searched, did topic influence search strategy, did make use of engine instructions or help documents, why | I felt good that my search came up with all relevant results. My mood kind of influenced me, because I was getting tired, I only looked at some of the results. I didn't use the engines help stuff because I didn't have any immediate problems with this search. Maybe next time. |

| 1. Day, Date and Location | Tuesday evening Nov. 4, 1997 at friend's house. |
|---|---|
| 2. Mood or affective state | Even more tired now, barely staying awake, but must finish this part. |
| 3. Name of search engine, number of times used it before, and whether like it or not and why | The search engine used wasWebcrawler and this was the second time I have used this engine. I liked this engine because it was easy to use and is better than Alta Vista. |
| 4. Search statement typed in, why chose those words, did it contain Boolean operators, why or why not, and was it a first search or respnse to another search | The statement typed in was bodyboarding, no capitals. I chose this statement because I wanted to see some pages on this topic, read other people's experiences, and learn more about it, since I am a bodyboarder myself. I did not include any Boolean operators because I didn't include any on my other search (must use the same statement for both searches) and because I didn't need any. |
| 5. Number of expected hits | Because I didn't get too many in the other search, let's go with 500. |
| 6. Number of actual hits | Close, but I still overshot the actual, which was only 162. |
| 7. Reactions to #5 & #6 | I couldn't believe there were so little hits. It seems to me that this engine is smaller than the other engine because I keep getting less results with this engine. But at least the numbers are small so it's easier to see if they are relevant or not. |
| 8. Evaluation of the hits: what proportion were relevant and how found this out | All of these were relevant, they all contained some information on bodyboarding. I found this out by looking at the titles and summaries, and I looked at all of them since there weren't very many in the first place. |
| 9. How felt about it, did mood influence how I searched, did topic influence search strategy, did make use of engine instructions or help documents, why | I'm glad that they were all relevant, seems I must be doing something right. My being tired made me want to cut corners and go through the list fast. But because there were so little, I went through them all. I wouldn't have looked at all the results if there were plenty. And I didn't use any of the engines help stuff because I didn't need them, plus I'm so tired I don't even want to waste my time with more things to do. |
