Propaganda

They tend not to have college degrees. They are professional only in that they get paid for what they do. Hookers are "professionals" and the good ones earn a lot more than the best transit drivers, for very good reason.

Subject: Road Rage Report, 10-24 From: auroraeb@aol.com (AuroraeB) Date: 1997/10/25 Message-ID: <19971025102001.GAA15266@ladder02.news.aol.com> Newsgroups: houston.general [More Headers] Hi there, Today I had the misfortune to encounter someone who can't control their temper while at the wheel. If you are a middle aged white male, average build, with receding hairline and glasses, and wearing business attire, and were driving a white Jeep Grand Cherokee heading outbound on Gessner at 3 :30 p.m. between I-10 and Long Point road, please read carefully. If this was not you, please read too, so you can see what you have to look out for on the roads. Traffic was fairly heavy, but instead of keeping pace with the rest of the traffic, you screamed up behind the car next to me, slammed on your brakes, and then began to honk your horn. Guess what..... The car in front of you cannot go any faster than the car in front of it. It is a simple law of physics. Then, you whipped behind me, cutting another car off, and came racing up behind me. Obviously, the posted speed limit of 35 mph was not fast enough for you. I choose to obey traffic laws. I don't want a ticket. Even if I wanted to speed, traffic would not allow me to speed up. Sorry to have held you back. What really bothered me, was your behavior when we encountered road construction, and the speed limit dropped to a lower speed. I slowed down, but you sped up behind me, slammed on the brakes, squealed your tires, and laid on the horn, and beat your fists on your steering wheel. And, when we encountered the school zone, you kept whipping back and forth between lanes, trying to get a carlength ahead. Sir, you need professional help in dealing with your emotional problems. A car can be a very dangerous thing, when people lose control and pitch temper tantrums behind the wheel. Any mental health professional can help you deal with your uncontrollable anger. What would have happened if your foot had slipped off the brake, and you rammed into me? Or into another car? Do you even care that you might have seriously harmed somebody today? Do you allow your children or grandchildren to throw temper tantrums? It is most unbecoming for a child, but for a grown man..... sad and pitiful. How would you feel if your wife, sister or mother were in a car being followed by someone behaving as you did? Or your child or grandchild? What is the deal? The traffic is not going to move any faster when you act this way, so why do it? Why not take the time stuck in traffic to listen to the radio, or to think about things. I can't make the car in front of me go any faster, so why honk, and make obscene gestures at me? GROW UP AND ACT LIKE A MAN, NOT A PITIFUL AND SPOILED LITTLE BOY! Tracy

Legalize Speeding

Subject: Re: LEGALIZE SPEEDING! From: paganpink@aol.com (PAGANPINK) Date: 1997/11/05 Message-ID: <19971105090901.EAA04778@ladder01.news.aol.com> Newsgroups: alt.motherjones [More Headers] JEFF I liked your message and thought i would add a little to it; there is no proof that speeding contributes to more than 1 % of accidents- it can worsen the impact of a collision that has already occurred but is almost never the root cause of a wreck. The insurance lobby sold the public a bill of goods that is bullshit in the late 1950's by requesting that states allow them to raise insurance rates based only on speeding citations REGARDLESS WHETHER THE INDIVIDUAL HAS EVER HAD AN ACCIDENT! Think about that.. they can raise rates on millions of people without ever proving that there action is dangerous. Much of the present state law allowing such nonsense was passes in the 50's and 60's with the "safety" lobbies(read insurance comps.) help by donating the new at that time radar guns to police departments all over the country. During the 80's we had the first national test of whether the lowering of speed limits would impact accident frequency when the D.O.T. forced all states to adopt a 55 mile an hour speed limit. We all know now that accidents went UP not down, and with several billion miles of real life accident data you would think that the "speed kills" vegoids would be out of business, wouldn't you? But not so fast. HOW ABOUT CALLING THEM AGGRESSIVE DRIVERS? ROAD RAGE? And in fact I think that the insurance companies and safety lobbies are doing just that. Please note how vague the acident data given is about so called road rage. Some of the wacko's attribute "60%" of all accidents to "aggressive driving". So what is aggresive driving? It turns out that crashs attributed to speeding, reckless driving, illegal lane usage, following too close, failing to yield are in that category. Whats left?? So they merely create a new category and lump everything together to try and prove their manufactured and bogus theory. How do we attack the demon road rage ? Why go after the aggressive drivers who are "speeding" and changing lanes too quickly. The people they are talking about are probably those trying to get around safety lobbyists driving 45 m.p.h. in the left lane of interstates during rush hour. I am sure they do it to save us from ourselves, right? In fact when they set speed limits they oftentimes determine them based on the speed thewt traffic flows by 85% of the drivers. It is when they set it lower than a level that the vast majority has found comfortable that motorists will simply disregard it, thus leading to another unending supply of revenue for not only the insurance companies but for the police departments as well! WHEW! Well , I guess that's it , sorry about being so long winded but I THINK I am becoming more of a libertarian every day. Thanks.

Keeping track of all the different sites soon became a problem. Bookmarks saved the day, creating a shortcut to all my favorite sites. Day after day I would just go to my favorite bookmarked sites and read the postings. Flaming occurs when someone posts a thread or message that elicits a derogatory remark. The first few weeks of being a member of a newsgroup was like going to a party that you weren't invited to. It was like I was sitting on the couch listening to everyone's conversations and being as inconspicuous as possible. Nobody talked to me or approached me, but no one shut me out of their conversations either.

I noticed that flaming occurs when some people make remarks that others might be sensitive to. Some are intential and some aren't, just the wrong choice of words were used. Other people will flame somebody who just posted a flaming message. Because people aren't face to face and the person who they are trying to flame becomes just a faceless name not a human being. This dehumanizing makes people take liberties in ridiculing, chastising and harrassing others. It seems to me that people are more willing to challenge another person's opinion or ideas on the internet message boards than if they were physically together in the same room. I really don't believe that most of these people would do these things if the other person was standing right in front of them.Sometimes there will be people that are new to a long thread and they will ask the same basic questions that were answered many times before in the previous messages. Some people get irritated at the laziness of others and either courteously ask the people to read the prior posts or flame them for their laziness. When there is a disagreement, some civilized people post questions or ask the other person to reclarify a statement. Others will just flame the original poster. There are people out there that take messages personally. They believe the other person is making a personal attack on them. This is not to say that some people aren't making personal attacks but most people take it too personally. An example of this is when a person states some facts or information and another person is just asking for the source of the facts or information to investigate for himself or herself. The other person will react to it as if the other person was questioning their intelligence or ethics.

After a while I was able to find some other places on the internet that talk a little about what goes on community wise in a newsgroup. I found them by using Excite and entering various subjects. I found the two I consider to be the best by typing in "newsgroup etiquette." Funny enough, both sites had a lot of the same ideas I did. In Usenet Etiquette, the author talked about spending some time reading everything before you actually post. This helps you to get an idea of what's appropriate and inappropriate. Another Etiquette site talks about being careful about who you flame, and really thinking about it and deciding whether or not that's really what you want to do.
