Report #1:"Traffic Psychology on the Internet.";by Cynthia Yap, G2, Traffic Psychology

  • Why I chose this report
  • I chose  Cynthia Yap's report three is because of the neat appearance of the page. Her page was setup to be really easy to view and reading her report was very interesting. The organization of her report and of her home page were simple and clear, making browsing her site easy.

  • The steps that led me to this report
  • The first step in my search for this page was to look at specific class home page's. I actually started at the first generations reports, in an attempt to see how the web has changed over the years, but due to topics I did not find interesting I chose the next generation. While searching through the second generations home page's I came across Cynthia Yap's page. I decided to browse a little more than the other sites because of the appearance of her page. It was at this time that I found her third report which contents got my intention .

  • Description of this report
  • This report discusses five topics that the author searched for on the internet that dealt with traffic psychology. She starts off by telling the reader that some of the topics were not successful in her search and for those she placed her own opinion based on class discussions or her own personal experience. The first topic she discussed was age. This topic looks at the difference in driving behaviors between the elderly population and the younger population. In her opinion she feels that there is a difference in driving styles between the two age groups and she feels that it would be important to study. The second topic was tailgating. In this discussion she used the Lycos search engine and got reports form generations one and two of psychology 459. She used some examples from the sites she visited and came to the conclusion that tailgating is a form of aggression, which takes form because the person in the car has the safety of the car itself. Next was the topic of convoys. For this topic she used the Webcrawler search engine and found links to the first and second generations of psychology 459. This was one of her weaker topics but she adds a conclusion that, convoys can offer a sense of security and therefore ease the stress a driver might feel. The accordion effect was the next topic and she discusses how she could not find any information after using search engines. She concludes that the accordian effect has a lot to do because of time constraints. in a world where every second counts people would rather not be nice and let some one in for it makes the driver feel as though they are wasting time. The last topic was back seat driving. For this topic she concludes that most passengers are just along for the ride but due to the need to be in control passengers will often give instructions to the driver.

  • My reaction to this report
  • I feel that Cynthia's third report was done quite well. I feel that she presented her information in a clear way that made it easy to understand for the most part. Two of the topics she discusses are two problems I have in my driving, tailgating and the back seat driver. And the information she provided I could easily relate to my own driving behavior.

In conclusion I felt that this was a very informative report and the strong areas are the ease of navigating through the report and her page. The weak point for this report was the lack of detailed information. Although I did not find a lot of difficulty understanding the topics it would have been easier if there was a brief explanation of what each topic was. If I were to try to expand on this report I think I would handle the weak point first and also do searches again. Due to the amount of web sites that have probably been expanded or created since this report was done I think there would probably be more information out there now.

  • Comparison to others' reports
  • Comparing this report to others I found that Cynthia's report to be the easiest to browse and her text was very clear and informative.

    Why I choose this report

I chose this report based on its title. I thought it would be interesting to see what another student had to say about this topic. Her web page was simple yet clear enough to read and navigate through.
