Report #1:"Initial Self Assessment as a Driver."by Cynthia Yap, G2, Traffic Psychology
Report #1:"Initial Self Assessment as a Driver."by Cynthia Yap, G2, Traffic Psychology
I choose Cynthia
Yap's homepage because at first when I clicked on to
her home page it was simple and easy to read. This was what got my attention
at first then as read her report on confessions it finally got my attention.
Her home page was neat and well organized. The titles for each section
was clear and well defined where I did not have to second guess whether
this was where I wanted to go.
The first thing I did was to choose a generation which I wanted to start my search with. This choosing led me to decide on one of the early generation so that I could see what they had done. As I scrolled through the names in the Psychology 459 class I selected names and when I came to Cynithia Yap's home page. I stopped to see that on could actually put information in such a simple form and yet get their point across. It did not take me very long to choose since I wanted to look at previous home pages.
This report deals with a self assestment of driving by
students within a group to figure out how a person feels about driving
and some of its regulations behind it. First the report looks at age of
drivers where one person states that it does not matter on the persons
age in order to get a licence. Another person talked about a persons reaction
time related to their age. Also within the report she writes about how
people feel about tailgating, convoyes and the accordian effect. This accordian
effect is very interesting in that cars follow each other, each one at
a certain distance and when one breaks they all break. With the self assesment
Cyntia Yap also includes her own conclusions about how to become a better
driver.
This student took an organized view of things where I could send out a survey, collect all the data and post it on the web with a person description of what is happening in each scenario. It though is a very interesting topic because my reaction to alot of these personal assestments were of I do that or I see this happening everyday. The part that impressed me the most was the fact that it was well organized and easy to read because of the spacing and the coloring of the page.
In summary this report gave me a feel for how people think
about situations in driving. Also the report tried to explain why these
things happen from a person view. I feel that there are still weak points
within this report. Weak points such as the amount of information available
and the possiblility of additional information such as other links. It
was an original way of portraying something like this to me. Without generalizing
the topics to make it easy to say. I propose that if a person were to take
this and expand on it the question should be the same but ask the interviewee
to be a little bit more specific. This would be to expand on ideas, to
be able to arrive at a point where you would be able to understand what
the person is thinking and why the person thinks in that particular fashion.
There were problems in finding the other students of her class once I was done reading her report but when I finally got to look at them the other reports did not catch my eye when I first opened them because it was hard to read or the organization of some files were confusing.
Also included in this report was a section entitled "My
Experience as a Driver." Even a section of "My Experience as a Pedestrian"
and "My Experience as a Passenger." Each of these sections decribed stories
of each situation where in the section of "My Experience as a Driver" she
wrote about how she had improved in her own driving skills. In the section
of experience as a pedestrian she talks about a person who had an experience
as a bicycle who was struck by a car. In the section of experience as a
passenger, she talks about being in the passenger seat. While in that seat
a person really does not have much control in what the driver actually
does.
Claudine's report compared to other people's report in the G8 was organized and easy to read. This I feel was due to the organization of the web page and the colors used within the her report. Other reports were colored with clouds and this led to being unreadable. The was also another page done by Charles Kam which was not put together like the rest of the pages within the generation 8.
I choose this report because it seemed interesting, interesting
in how Dan
Hamamoto put together his web page and how the information was processed
on the page. Also I wanted more information from other generations on what
the world wide web was about and what it consisted of. Trying to figure
out what cyberspace is about tends to be confusing and frustrating because
of all the information out there. With reports like this I can come closer
to an understanding of one part of cyberspace. Another reason why I choose
this report was because of the picture and the coloring of the web page
when I first clicked on to this report.
Steps that led me to this report, were such that it was
mere chance that I choose this specific generation from the list of prior
generations, generation
5. With in this generation there were many other similar topic so I
started to click on some of the names with in this generation
some of them seemed kind of boring and some seem to be hard to read with
the background which they used. The meaning of this is that some people
used pictured background with coloring similar to that of the words which
were hard to read. So I moved on to the next one and the next one then
finally I can to Dan
Hamamoto's web page which had and interesting topic of cyber psychology.
Also the coloring was not as hard to read as the other reports.
This report focused on cyber-therapy, driving therapy and technology and transgression. For the analysis of cyber-therapy, Hamamoto writes about two different doctors that use cyber-therapy to treat patients. One of these doctors is Dr. Raymond. The main thing that he focuses on is the participation theory. In this theory, all aspects of relationships must be learned, so in other words, practice makes perfect. The other doctor that Hamamoto wrote about was Dr. Sarmiento. Dr. Sarmiento focuses on treating relationships as business deals; this means using negotiation and communication.
The next section was about driving therapy. In this section, Hamamoto analyzes the views of Dr. Cohn and Dr. Driving. Dr. Cohn is a therapist, his view of improving driving is to reduce stress from environmental factors by meditating and improving diet. Meditation allows one to calm oneself and to achieve self-awareness. Improving ones diet can reduce anxiety. Dr. Driving is a behaviorist. He focuses on analyzing the behavior and then altering the unwanted behavior. The difference in the two doctors approaches is that while Dr. Cohn is indirect, Dr. Driving is more direct, finding specific driving problems and gives solutions to them.
The last section of Hamamoto's
report focused on technology and transgression. He looked into three main
topics. The first of these is the computer underground. People in this
category are hackers, cryptoanarchists, virologists, and phreakers. These
people are interested and enjoy messing up others computers. The second
category covered in this section deals with occult technology. The people
in this category are weird scientists, EVP researchers, UFOlogists, and
psychotronics. They are searching for answers to questions that remain
a mystery. The last category covered is neuronauts. These are VR enthusiasts,
brain/mind machine users, and synthetic drug users. These people are interested
in altered space and reality. The technology that is available today is
so vast. Users have greater freedom, and more interaction.
This report was very informative. I learned more about
the topics covered. I agree with Hamamoto's
view of the increasing technology creating transgression because I feel
that there are some things that everyone does not need to know. I believe
that there is a point when too much information is not good and can be
detrimental to society. In reference to therapy over the internet, I do
not think it is a good idea. The patient does not even know if the "so
called" doctor that they are e-mailing is real. They could be taking advice
from an unqualified person.
All the other reports within this generation was very hard to read due to the coloring of the back ground. With Hamamoto's report though there was a blue background but the wording stood out so it was easier to read. The only thing though is that the font that he used, he should have made it a little bigger as to make it a little more easier to read. It might have made the report look longer but when reading a person can read and understand a little faster.
I choose this report because like the past three reports I liked I liked the clarity of the web page in the coloring which is what attrated me first then the topic of search engines. I wanted to see the results and reactions of such a topic, which this report keyed on. Another reason why I choose this reports was that I liked the way MaryElizabeth U Pacheco utilized a double column system in the report.
The way I came about choosing MaryElizabeth
U Pacheco's report was that I was scanning through the list of all
the generations
and had to choose from the cyber-psychology list, the prior one that I
choose was from G5
so I decided to try my luck with a more recent generation. So I choose
G7
and from the list of names I had to choose one name and one report to do.
This was helped along with my wanting to know what a person wrote about
search engines and how they felt about it. So I went through the list of
names and found the one that caught my eye and consisted of the topic I
wanted to read about.
The report written by MaryElizabeth
U Paceco begins by defining a search engine as something which helps
people looking for information on the internet. This is done by taking
a topic which the person is interested in and narrows it down to the specific
information which the person wants to read. She next goes into her account
of experiences using Web search Engines such as Excite, Yahoo, Infoseek,
and Lycos. In her chart, she states 1) date and location 2)
mood/affect 3) which search engine she used 4) topic/words
searched 5) expected # of hits 6) actual # of hits 7)
reactions to hits 8) evaluation of search 9) feelings about
search 10) rating scale. Also within her report she discusses the
experiences of others who use search engines to find what they are looking
for. She agrees that there were not very many problems besides making good
word choices and having patience with in the search engines themselves.
In a conclusion, she came to an understanding that having patience is worth
the time you can save. The main searches she conducted were "web page authoring"
on Excite and Yahoo, "home schooling" Infoseek and Yahoo, "kids crafts"
Excite and Yahoo, "automobile maintenance" Yahoo and Excite, and
"search engines" Info seek and Lycos.
In comparison to other reports of the same generation some of them tried to hard to impress people with alot of pictures which slowed down the connect time, and some were to simple that it did not grab my attention. I think that MaryElizabeth U Pacheco's report is inovative in her use of a double column to help the reader read and understand the format of her report. If I were rate this I would rate this a 10 with some of the others as 9 just because it was to cluttered or not as innovative.
