Overview of the Chapter
In this chapter bland discusses the "Two Esthetics."
What she means by two esthetics is the two schools of computer use.
One type refers to "getting your hand dirty" and learning the computer's
language. Understanding what the commands you give mean when the
computer interprets them.
The second esthetic refers to how most people,
including myself, use computers today. That is we only use a surface
language. Myself, for example, I have no idea how to give written
commands. I only know how to use a mouse and the drag and click options.
My Thoughts
In my opinion it
easier to just use the drag and click. I think that many people would
agree with me. I can appreciate those people who want to know more
and make the effort to learn the computer's language.
Class Discussion
There were some different opinions in our class
discussion. I posed the idea that it was as easy to use a computer
as either reading or writing. In my opinion and those who agreed
with me is that you can read what your options are on the screen and with
a hand eye coordination, use the mouse to select your desired option.
Dr. James' posed the idea that there are well educated
members of the faculty that cannot use a computer. His view
is that just because you can read and write does not automatically infer
that you can use a computer.
