" It seems that everybody has their own opinion
and facts to back them
up. Personally, I think that the topic
needs more scrutinizing and
scientific study by professionals. I also
believe that because certain states
have successfully adopted speed limits
in the 70-75 mile per hour range
and places like Europe have places where
there are no speed limits, that
there is a good case to be made for the
repeal of maximum speed limits.
The fact that speed limits were first
imposed to conserve gas in the seven
ties also helps make a good case for speed
limit reform. "

To be a Rad Racer or Not to be?
I can only say that I like to drive fast I really do even my mom
likes to speed,
and she taught me how to drive so go figure. However, if you weigh
the risks
is speeding really worth it? We cannot control are cars adequately
at high
speeds. Speed limits are posted for a reason, and that is to provide
a safer
highways for every one. From a Traffic Psychologist's perspective
I can only
asentuate on the negative characteristics of speeding. Speeding
does not allow
any driver adequate time to observe and react to road conditions,
thus making
road conditions unsafe. However, speed limits are not keeping people
from
driving fast. Rules are made to be broken, the only sure way to
alleviate
speeding would be to make the attendance of traffic psychology
seminars
required on license renewal. If all drivers could successfully
complete a
driving make over. I think the roads would be a safer place.

The web sights I visited had valid arguments for and against speeding.
My personal feeling is that it
should be okay to speed. People will speed weather or not there
is a speed limit enforced. However I
do believe there should be a speed limit enforced in certain areas
and times, for example during
school, and during certain weather conditions for safety purposes.
I think if people are responsible
and cautious, speeding is really not a bad deed.

My View on Speeding
I love to speed.
Speed is the best rush I have ever experienced. Fast is my
favorite way to drive
and I have driven over the speed limit more times then I could
ever count.
Ever time I get into a car and press the gas I can feel my adrenaline
rushing and
my need for speed starts to kick in.
I cannot say for sure but I do believe that this need is
a least partially hereditary.
I say this because both of my parents enjoy driving fast. I might
be
partially because they are also taught me how to drive, but they
never
actually taught me how to speed.
Though I love to drive fast and have done numerous times in the
past,
I have realized from experience the dangers. Five years ago
I would have been
all for increasing the speed limit but now I'm not so sure.
No, most of the time my opinion on speeding, which is against it,
and my behavior, which is speeding, are not consistent. In
recent months I
have taken major steps to reduce my speed and be more aware
of the dangers of speeding each time I am tempted to speed.
In my
neighborhood there are many small children who do not pay attention
to what is going on around them. This is what made me realize
that
many people drive in the same manner. They do not know what
is going
on around them and it up to us as individuals to be extra aware.
Speeding and the
Law
I have a hard time with the idea of speed limits and giving
tickets
for those who are caught for breaking these laws. Speeding
is
the most frequently broken law in the United States. In my
opinion speeding laws and the tickets for speeding only serve two
purposes: 1. Speeding laws that the majority of citizens do not
follow
only makes more people criminals. 2. Tickets for those caught speeding
is only another way for the government to get money out of us.
My main theory for this is, if the law enforcement officials did
want speeding
to stop completely, all they would have to do is make speed capacity
regulation for car manufacturers. If a law was to pass stating
that all
new cars are made are unable to exceed the speed limit, and send
it to
all the car makers in the world, all speeding would end.
It would not be hard for a car maker to install a computer that
does not allow
their cars to exceed a certain speed limit. And if the want
to sell their cars in the
U.S. they would find a way.
Net Research
Most of the participants that I found under the speeding topics
were most foundations that were against speeding and/or reckless
driving.
MADD, which we all know
is Mother Against Drunk Driving, is not actually
against speeding. But, I found MADD in this category.
Their topic and main
idea is saving lives, and that is why they can be found here.
Another web page that I found interesting was the Lycos
question and answer
page on speeding. They had tons of statistics and information
that
seem to all be against speeding and increasing the speed limit.
Another
Link
All the souses that I found on the web were all basically against
speeding
and all for informing the public on the risk and consequences of
speeding.

Speeding?
Have you ever really thought about it? Say you
travel at 10-15 MPH over the speed limit? On a typical trip of 10 miles
on a 45
MPH street, theoretically you will save between
2 1/2 and 3 1/2 minutes. And because many traffic signal along highways
are
preset for vehicles to travel at or below the
speed limit, you will probably find yourself stopping at more lights and
thus your
actual gain would be reduced or even eliminated.
Thus, speeding for short distances on a non controlled access highway does
not really save you any time.

Why do you grant deserving a ticket?? unless you were reckless, I think
a
lot interstate and freeways are under posted.
It is one BIG money maker for the authorities.
I speed every day. I see everybody speeding everyday...who drives
at posted
limits??? (very few exceptions).
It's only when you get caught that matters.

Pennsylvania law states that no ambulance shall exceed the posted speed
limit, FOR ANY REASON!!!! I myself was in a serious crash because my
driver was going 15MPH above the posted speed limit. THE LAW IS THE
LAW,
JUST BECAUSE WE TURN ON THE RED LIGHTS DOES NOT EXEMPT US FROM IT!!!!!
HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO TREAT A PATIENT WHEN YOU CANNOT EVEN GET TO THE
SCENE BECAUSE OF NEGLIGENCE!!!!
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN ACCIDENT!!!!! THESE EVENTS ARE BROUGHT
ON
BY STUPIDITY, HEROISM, AND GROSS NEGLIGENCE!!!!
I see the focus in DejaNews to be almost to total opposite
of what I found on
the web. Everyone here seems to be all for promoting speeding
and
the upping of the speed limits. I do not think I can agree
with most
of the participants in these postings.
Traffic Psychology's
Role
Traffic psychology could play a very large role in the speed
limit debate, by facilitating productive
discussions and validating
studies' methodologies and statistical
significance. Dr. Driving reaches large
amounts of people on a regular basis. Therefor, this could
be a very
useful pathway in order to inform and teach people about speeding
and more importantly, not speeding.
With all the varying reports, studies and surveys being conducted,
the public must know the true significance of each one as opposed
to
the significance of the most
publicized one.

After searching through the net, I know more information
to support my opinion
that speeding is dangerous. It not only cut you reaction
time but it also makes it
harder for others to see you. I now know what problems come
from speeding
actually cause the dangerous situations.
I still do not know how much this will help to not speed.
I think its up to the
individual's will to not speed. No matter what they read
or what
others tell someone, they have to make the choice to speed or not
speed
on their own.
And my final thought is that speeding can kill; though
there is no need for speed to kill. If people were more aware
speed would not be such a problem. I think it the responsibility
to know when
it too dangerous to speed.
