Introduction
I had the honor of being the first person in my class to do their oral presentation.  Luckily I was stuck with the introduction to the book which was good because it covered a whole lot of things and not just one area in general.  Let me start off by saying that from what I read this book seems to be very interesting whether you are into computers or not.  the reason i say this is because some of the things that it discusses are eye-openers to me and I think even crazy at times.  Anyway, let me begin.

Summary

The intro starts of by saying that before computers were seen as a big calculator and now it is seen by some as a way to talk, exchange ideas, and even assume another persona unlike the one we show everyday.  It discusses how the boundaries between real and virtual are breaking down and these forms of communication are being more widely used and accepted.  It then goes into Mud's and how people feel about them.  The book says that someone even says that playing a Mud is more real than real life itself.  This to me seems very disturbing especially when I read on and found out that there are people who spend in excess of eighty hours a week in these Mud's.  I personally feel that for these people to be doing this that there must be something wrong with them or they are missing something in their life.  It also says that on these Mud's people can pretend to be a male if they are a female or vice versa.  In fact they can be a dog if they want to.  This to me seems weird because you are pretending to be something that you are not.  Maybe I am jumping ahead of myself here but that is just the way that I feel.  The intro even talks about something called virtual rape where another player takes over your player and has total control over it.  There are also cyberpsychologists on a Mud not to mention robots who pretend to be real people that can actually carry on a conversation.  She says that we are moving from a modernist culture of calculation to a post modernist culture of simulation.  This to me simply says that we are using our resources in a totally different way.  The intro also talks about cybersex which is something I sure we have all heard of.

Conclusion
In conclusion I feel that the intro does a good job of briefly explaining what the book will be discussing.  Another thing that it also does is gain the interest of its readers by offering examples but not going into detail about them.  The intro is an excellent way for people to decide whether or not they want to read the book.  Overall I would have to say that the book seems interesting and informational.  A warning to the future generation, there are going to be some weird discussions brought up in class, I warn you to be careful what you say as to not irritate anyone else because believe it or not there will always be someone who takes things as a personal threat.  I leave you with this, don't be afraid to state and believe in your opinion.
