Jay Sakoda's Report on
Social Psychology of Web Architecture: Hints to Becoming a Web Architect
My reaction is that I think Mr. Glover's site is very useful to novice web designers. We may not agree with what he said on his homepage but it is always good to have a second opinion. I also agree that blinking texts and construction sign icons may be personal annoyances to some but not to others. For me, I don't see them as personal annoyances. I see them as useful features that give us information. Blinking texts are useful in emphasizing some things whereas construction signs serve to warn us about the status of a site. I agree with the author on the 3 main points. I think they are good tips on creating a good homepage.
My final reaction is that I think this part has a lot of information about creating a webpage and is very useful.
This part relates to the course topic of web publishing because it gives us information on how to create a good webpage.
I agree with all of Dr. James's views. I think having a homepage is like having a second home. You can decorate this home any way you want to and it is fast, cheap and easy. However, if you want to decorate your real house, it can be a lot more expensive and slower. I also agree that a web architect is like a "virtual god" because he has the power to create the web page that he wants.
This part relates to the course topic of web publishing as it talks about what it is like having a webpage and being a web architect.
This part relates to the course topic of web publishing as it talks about the author's view of what it is like to become a web designer.
I think the internet contains many links on how to create a webpage. Hence, it is easy to find all the tools needed to create one on the web. The four links mentioned above are just some examples. The web also contains thousands of links on different topics.
This part is related to the course topic of web publishing because it gives us information on where to look for help in creating a webpage.
I have learnt some useful information about creating a webpage and some related links. I already knew how to create a homepage before taking this class so it is not a new thing for me. I have always thought of my homepage as a second home and I love to update my homepage all the time by adding images or changing the backgrounds. I never got tired of that. You can say I love my homepage.
The information presented is interesting to me because it is always good to know what others think having a homepage or being a web architect is like. I think the information is believable because it is based on the author's own experience of creating a web page and also on a web architect's opinion. It is also authoritative because he has included quotes and ideas from Dr. James.
One concept that I have acquired is that having a homepage is like having a second home. The second concept is that a web architect is like a virtual god. This means that you can decide what your homepage is going to be like. I think these 2 are very important concepts and I believe most netizens would agree with them.
Dr. James:
What does the word "Architecture" mean in conjunction with homepages?
My Answer: Architecture means the building of something, usually buildings. When the word is used with homepages, it means creating homepages. Hence, a web architect is someone who creates and designs webpages as opposed to an architect who designs buildings.
In what way can web design be "personal"?
My Answer: Web design can be personal if it reflects who you are. It should be original and a product of your own ideas and creation.
How does psychology relate to "Web design"?
My Answer: Well, I think psychology is related to everything you do because it lets us understand ourselves and others better. Needless to say, it is also related to web design. Psychology can help us create better webpages if we know how to attract visitors to our websites by understanding their psychology. This is what happens in the movie industry. Filmmakers first try to understand what kind of movies attract people. Movies nowadays usually contain sexually explicit material because the filmmakers know that it attracts people. In addition, if we can understand ourselves and others and manage our emotions better, we will be more productive as a person and as a web designer.
My Answer: I think they are related because if we are emotional literate, we are more capable as a person to do various things such as becoming internet literate because we are able to manage our own emotions. Being internet literate means you know how to find your way around the internet such as going to newsgroups and looking for the information that you want.
Argyle Bumanglag:
How does emotional intelligence influence our abilities to develop webpages? Does the level of a person's emotional intelligence correlate to the quality of a person's webpage?
My Answer: This is similar to Dr. James's question above. If we have emotional intelligence, it will be easier for us to deal with life as we can better manage our emotions. Hence, we will be able to create better webpages. I think a person's emotional intelligence is a little bit related to the quality of a person's webpage but not a lot. There are many people with low emotional intelligence who can create a webpage of quality if they can just read and follow a HTML tutorial book. But, I agree that emotional intelligence can play a large part in the quality of a webpage. It is not an absolute necessity though for creating a good webpage.
You said that you agree with the author's view that creating webpages is a fun hobby. This may not be the case however for someone who has very little experience with webpages. Is there any way that we can make the experience fun for everyone, rather than limit the excitement only to those with web design experience?
My Answer: One good way to enjoy the experience for those who don't know how to create a webpage is to see how others create their webpages. You can surf the web and look at the millions of webpages there. You can also ask them how they have created a webpage and their tips on creating one. You may find some interesting answers.
Amy Hayashida, Robby Solmssen:
How can you determine what is a "good" webpage?
My Answer: I think it is hard to say what is good or bad because people have different tastes and standards. But, I think there are some basic things that every web designer should know and these basic things should serve as a guideline for what is good or bad. A good webpage should at least have a visible layout and can be accessible to viewers. A good way to find out what is a "good" webpage is to consult the various tips on creating a webpage like the report I have just presented. They will tell you what are the things you should or should not do with your homepage. Certain things such as blinking text is an example of something bad to add to a webpage. Hence, webpages that contain it are considered bad web pages in my opinion.
What is the difference between a web designer and a web architect?
My Answer: I think they are the same in the sense that they both create and design webpages.
Tomoko Seino:
Are webpages harmful in any ways for a person? What should not be presented in webpages to protect from harm?
My Answer: Yes. Webpages can be harmful to people if they contain false information or bad information. These information includes telling people where they can find drugs or things like that, information that suggests ways of dying, information that promotes racism, hostility or a certain cult religion, information that teach people bad things like it is alright to steal etc.
How did you learn to create a webpage?
My Answer: I first learnt how to create a webpage on my own by studying and following the instructions at this site. Then, I ventured on my own from there and found the experience of creating webpages to be fun and very rewarding.
What are some of the tips in making a webpage for someone who has never made one before?
My Answer: Well, one of the tips is to make sure you get the basics of how to create a webpage right. Then, everything should work well.
Leena Dwiggins:
Do you think people use creating a web page as a means of expressing themselves? Similar to an artist with painting?
My Answer: I think so. That is exactly what I do with my homepage. But, I think different people create webpages for different reasons; some for profit, some for the sheer joy of it, some to promote certain organizations or ideas, others for a living etc.
You seem to have an emotional attachment to your webpage (calling it your second home). Did this attachment come as a result of the time, energy and creativity you put into its creation and maintenance?
My Answer: I think so. It is the same as seeing it as your home and wanting to decorate it. Of course you will feel more attached to it as a result of the time, energy and creativity you have put into creating it.
After reading this, do you think creating a webpage as being not that complicated?(Especially with all the information on creating one)
My Answer: I think the information certainly helps a lot for those who don't know how to create a webpage.
Lynne Faylogna:
You said creating a webpage is exciting and important. Just a curiosity, does a webpage reflect the type of person that you are?
My Answer: Well, I think sometimes a webpage reflects the type of person you are if you want it to do so. If it is a commercial webpage that you have created, it probabaly won't reflect the type of person that you are as there may be certain restrictions on how your webpage should look like. It certainly can't look like a personal homepage that reflects who you are. It also depends if you want it to reflect who you are. You can create a personal homepage that does not reflect who you are at all if you choose to do so by adding backgrounds and things that you don't like. A homepage reflects who you are if you create it according to what you like and don't like. For example, if you choose the kind of backgrounds or icons that you like for your webpage, it will reflect who you are.
James Yang:
How is a homepage like your home?
My Answer: I think a homepage is like your home because it is yours and you can do whatever you like with it. If you think of it as your home, it will be. If not, it won't be I suppose. You must like your homepage and see it as your home first. It is just like you bought a book and it became yours. A homepage is just like a home because it contains your thoughts, ideas and feelings. It is a place where you feel comfortable to express your ideas freely and be who you are. It is also a place that you feel belongs to you.
What benefits do you see in the ability to create a successful webpage?
My Answer: One of the benefits include getting jobs that pay well such as web designers. Another benefit is that you have a second home where you can be at ease with your thoughts, feelings etc and also share them with others at the same time if you want. It is another avenue for your creative abilities to come into play.
Robby Solmssen:
Does marketing or advertising have a greater impact than psychology, when one creates a new web. Thus, creating a site that is much more popular?
My Answer: I think marketing or advertising goes along with psychology. One of the strategies of successful marketing may be getting people to visit a site. This can be accomplished by understanding what attracts visitors. Now, this has to do with psychology. If it is just marketing or advertising without psychology, it probably won't create a popular site. So, I think psychology plays the largest part in creating a popular site. Marketing or advertising is just a tool to get people to visit the site.
Janice Kamm:
How important is it to have an "original" homepage and how do you know how many images vs text should be on a homepage?
My Answer: Well, I think it is not that important to have an "original" homepage. It is actually up to the person who creates the webpage. I think images should only be used for decorations so usually the amount is smaller than the amount of text.
Is using frames and having links to different pages better than having one long page where you have to scroll down a long way to get to the end of the page?
My Answer: Well, I think it is better to have links to different pages than to have one long page where you have to scroll down to get to the end of the page. This will make it easier for others to read. However, not many people like frames. Taking this into consideration, many sites usually give viewers the option to choose whether to view the sites with frames or not. This shows that not many people like frames.
Tara Anthony:
Can having a great homepage be as fulfilling as having a real great home?
My Answer: Well, I think having a real great home is more fulfilling than having a great homepage because a great home involves a lot of love, sharing and concern that one feels and receive from others whereas a great homepage is actually your own feelings towards it. But, I think having a great homepage may give you a lot of satisfaction personally and maybe financially if your income depends on that. On the other hand, I think a real great home is priceless.
Can webpages ever really be finished?
My Answer: Well, it is up to the person if they want to finish it or not. I think webpages can never be finished because you can go on and work on your webpage forever if you never run out of new ideas to decorate your homepage.
There are no other student reports in this generation for comparison yet at this point.
Well, start early like I did and try to do your best. You will feel the greatest satisfaction if you are rewarded for doing your best. It is very important that you spend some time exploring the reports of previous generations so that you will know what to write for your own report. Pay special attention to how the reports are structured and organized. Use that as a guideline to improve your own reports. Also, spend some time looking for good images and backgrounds for your websites. If you have any doubts on your mind, don't hesitate to ask Dr. James. Last but not least, if you are really interested in the topic of this report, you can do a search on the internet. I am sure you will find many resources related to the topic.
