Report #1: Driving Cartoons by Jenica Guerra (Generation 6)
I choose this report because I love cartoons. I love cartoons and I'm not ashamed to say so. I always leave my tv on the Cartoon Network. BooBoo, Baba, Didi! BooBoo, Baba, Didi! BooBoo, Baba, Didi! Actually, there was another reason why I choose to use her report. Mainly because she is my sister. I didn't even know she took this class so I thought it would be funny to use her toons.
I found out about this report when someone mentioned Jenica's name in an oral presentation. The first thing I did after class that day was look for her homepage. I looked at her toon report and thought it was nicely done with funny toons. I also called her up right after just to tease her. I was surprised to see that many other students have used her report in their generations file.
The purpose of this report was to show, in a funny way, the many mistakes or driving blunders people make. The situations were taken from the experiences of the driver.
I really enjoyed this report. If I had any skill in drawing at all I would go out and draw some toons right now. I strongly suggest anyone who enjoys cartoons to check out this report. The situations in the cartoons will make you laugh because you will recognize them. You see these same situations everytime you get into your car. At least by showing them as a cartoon more people will read them. I also feel that something different than the norm, such as a cartoon, will be more eye catching and will be embedded in someone's memory. Whereas, when someone just reads a report, the next day they barely remember what the report was about.
This report was a good basis as to how to make a good report. I also feel that the web page is a good basis on how to make a web page. Some of the other web pages have annoying background colors or pictures. This report only used small animated gifs which added to the report. Many people attempt to make their web page too extravagant and creative. This usually leads to either a long lag time to load the web page or sore eyes. I for one plan to follow in my sister's footsteps and be creative but not go overboard.
Report #2: Web Search Engines and Me by Kynan Yonamine (Generation 7)
I choose this report because I wanted to see what people had to say about search engines and because I like Kynan's home page. I was just clicking on everyone's home page and saw pictures of guys practicing judo, so I became interested. Not that I practice judo or anything, it just looked interesting. Then I looked at his welcome heading, which said "E Komo Mai!" which means enter in Hawaiian. I took Hawaiian to fulfill my language requirement so of course I was interested in what the page was about.
I pretty much found this report by continuous clicking of the mouse on everyone's name. I usually just look for a home page that catches my eye, if not I just hit the back button and click again.
Kynan performed ten separate searches using two different search engines. He gives a full description as to his mood, time of day, place, etc. Then he rates himself after each session. After his description of his sessions he examines other student's reports on search engines.
The main reason why I wanted to read this report of Kynan's was I was interested as to what he was going to say about search engines. He seemed to get frustrated with them, but after several sessions got used to them. I used to feel the same way. I used to have a 14K modem connection to the internet and hated waiting for the pages to load. I could never remember which search engine to use. It used to make me really mad trying to figure out whether to use a "+", "AND", or just a blank space. It was funny that he made a comment about a slow connection and feeling like hitting the computer. I used to feel the same way. Now, with roadrunner, I love my computer and would never hit it for fear of breaking it. Because then I couldn't go on the internet.
I thought that this report was on the long side. I guess all of the reports are supposed to be real long? But, overall I thought it was very nicely done. I especially like the background. I wanted to copy his background because it looks very nice but doesn't distract the reader or make the text hard to read. The only thing I didn't like about his report was having to scroll down so much, he could have included more navigation links.
Report #3: Initial Self-Assessment as a Driver by Nancee Aki (Generation 2)
I choose this report because I am a aggressive driver at heart, even though I try to be safe I'm not very good at it. I know and have known for a very long time that speeding won't get me anywhere, except in trouble, especially with the law. I want to learn to be a safer driver, but when I am going to work I just can't seem to help it.
I found this report by once again just clicking on a generation at random and clicking on people's names. I don't know why I choose her home page, it didn't appeal to me as some of the others did, I just decided to look at her reports. When I saw that her report was about speeding and tailgating I became interested, especially since this is a hot topic in class. I also enjoy talking about driving in general.
Nancee's topic had to deal with the subjects of tailgating, speeding, aggressive driving, convoys, and driving makeovers. I initially had no idea what convoys were or what a driving makeover was. Nancee defines these five different subjects and then gives links to web sites which have similar topics. She then explains why people do things such as tailgate, speed, drive aggressively. Then she gives tips on how to avoid these types of people and also how to avoid becoming one yourself. By the way convoys, I discovered, are when cars drive in packs, usually tight packs. This supposedly makes them feel safer when they speed. A driving makeover is the process of improving your driving skills by taking note of your driving habits, then attempting to modify your bad habits.
I thought that Nancee did a great job on referencing other people's reports to hers. It was a very good report and is a good place to find out definitions on driving terms. The only real problem I had with her web page was her background. It looked like a very nice background but it made the text slightly hard to read. After a while my eyes began to water and became sore. I believe that no background is better than a distracting one.
From what I've seen Nancee has one of the most detailed and full reports from this generation. She made sure to include information from many other people's reports. It is very obvious that she spent a great deal of time thinking about and writing out her information. Some of the other students were more lax and seemed to have a lot less to say.
Report #4: Portrayals of Driving Behavior on TV?Good or Bad? Do People Know What is Real and What Isn?t These Days??? by Travis Abe of Generation 7
I chose this report because I noticed that a lot of other student's used his report in their generational files. So I wanted to find out why. When I read his report I could understand why. His report was very interesting and had a nice layout to the web page. I also really liked his report's title, it just seemed to catch my eye. It was either this one or Sean Marrs' report on driving toons, which is very good by the way make sure you check it out. Since I already had a report on cartoons I choose Travis' report.
I actually found this report when I was on Sean Marrs' web page. He had used Travis in his generation report and I was impressed. Also many other students made comments about his web page. When I actually went to his home page I decided this is the one.
The purpose of this report is to find out how driving is shown through movies, tv, and even commercials. Travis looks at shows such as "The Rock," "Ace Ventura," and even the PeeWee's Playhouse series. I found that last one very funny, especially since I just saw "Mystery Men" which features the PeeWee guy. He also goes over some car commercials. He states that tv does affect the way people drive. He watches these movies and shows and see how many bad driving habits he can spot. He then says how the media in general really can affect driving.
I believe that Travis may be the only person in the world who watches tv more than I do. He even likes cartoons just like I do. One thing I really wanted to compliment him on was his page design. The background and text were always matching and did not interfere with each other in anyway. Especially his background picture of the skulls. He does a good job in backing up his belief that the media affects driving.
I was glad that I didn't get sore eyes from looking at Travis' web page. This is especially good for me because I often use the internet and do my homework after midnight. I start to become tired and get a headache if the background color is too bright. I think that the other students of his generation should have looked at his home page more. This would have definitely helped them on their design. I know I certainly will look at his home page for help.
