A Review of Dr. Daniel Goldman’s“Working with Emotional Intelligence” |
|
Why did I read this book?I read “Working with Emotional Intelligence” because it was apart of my assigned reading for my Psychology 409 class taught by Dr. Leon James at the University of Hawaii. What did I think about the setup of this book?I found the short story summaries more explanatory than a traditional textbook of definitions, statistics, and experiment. However, definitions, statistics, and experiments were included in this book. It was more enjoyable to read and easier to understand due to the short story setup that focused on appropriate examples in the workplace. It was also comforting to see that each article was no longer than a page and a half. What did I learn from this book?I learned that your level of emotional intelligence (and those around you) would undoubtedly impact your life. Awareness of your own emotional intelligence is key in understanding the relationships in your life. It is the key to handling your private and public relationships better. I also learned that you can increase your emotional intelligence and to some degree your emotional intelligence may increase as you mature. A high level of emotional intelligence is a talent that the business world is beginning to value as a commodity. As each industry finds teamwork a necessity, the value of those employees who are emotionally intelligent increases. Why should you read this book?
Because this book pertains to all of us. The topic of emotional intelligence, and the set up of this book, is designed for discussion. You may find yourself disagreeing or questioning Dr. Goldman’s ideas, as I did, but through thought and discussion you are increasing your awareness of your own emotional intelligence. This will truly be beneficial in today’s society. If you would like more information check out the Emotional Intelligence Service Website: Work Cited: Goldman, Daniel.
