The Value of Magic

Competence pays most at the top.

The Value of Magic p.34

Main Points:

  1. Emotional competencies make up two thirds or more of the ingredients for success.
  2. Simple jobs top 1% worth 3 times more (clerks)
  3. Medium jobs worth 12 of the bottom %
  4. The value of a top performer is 127% more valuable than an avg. performer.

My view:

Going the extra mile always leads to greater success in the workplace.

Applies to class:

The bottom percent are not feeling the motivation. That motivation would lead to less rage more satisfaction

The Rule of Thumb p.33

Main Points:

  1. imp. Of emotional intell. Increases the higher you go in an organization
  2. Good example : Gov’t
  3. Being better at the cognitive does not guarantee you will be a star leader, actually you only need the basic

My view:

Duh: look at the president!!!

Applies to class:

Low emotional IQ of management equals more workplace rage.

Competence Pays Most at the Top p.35

Main Points:

  1. Interpersonal effectiveness is important in management
  2. A low level job must depend mostly on cognitive ability

My view: (explain manager thing)

I would not have picked manager #3; I would have picked manager #2 b/c he was a nice blend of experience between experience and emotional IQ. #3 only had emotional IQ going for him. Disgruntled employees!

Applies to class:

Disgruntled employees leads to workplace rage!!!
