Suggestion for the future generation

Reid Nakamitsu's report

Why I chose this report?

The first thing that impressed me about Reid's home page was how he organized his page. He used happy faces as bullets and seeing happy faces makes me smile. He also had different links to places that I was intending on adding it to my own homepage. For example, Also, comparing his homepage to the other homepages in his generation, Travis' homepage seem to be the most thought out and it seemed as if he was enthused about creating his homepage.

How I made this choice?

I didn't visit the homepages from the beginning generations because I wanted to see a homepage that was more up to date with what the new things we are learning now. So I visited generation 7. I went through all the homepages of the 409b class and the Reid's homepage caught my attention due to all its happy faces as bullets. I spent about 2-3 minutes looking at different homepages, but I was looking for something that interests me.

What this report is about?

One of his reports was about "Web Search Engines & Me." He talked about how search engines can help people search for items on the net. For example, he used the search engines Alta Vista and Web Crawler and how this helped him get information about freediving, bodyboarding, underwater photography, puka shells, and Simpson's. He listed down how many related topics were on these subjects and how many of them really related to what he wanted to know. For example, on Simpson's, he wanted to view the cartoon characters but it brought up people under the name Simpson. He also mentions whether or not these engines were useful. For example, he liked Web Crawler because it was easy to use and he was able to customize what topic he wanted to search on. For example, freediving in Hawaii.

Reactions

My reaction to Reid's homepage got me to want to try out the different search engines. I've only used Excite, Infoseek, and Yahoo, but that's about it. His homepage seemed to be quite advanced for me for now, so I'm just sticking to the basics. I felt that his content presentation was quite impressive because he gave example of the Alta Vista and Web Crawler search engines and how it related to his topics. He chooses very basic topics, for example, Simpson that could list topics concerning the O.J. Simpson trial. His content was quite simple. He only used the two search engines and based his whole paper on that. I felt that he could have stayed with just two topics and expand from that. For example, freediving and bodyboarding in Hawaii, or their techniques, or styles. I suggest that he could have explained how these search engines describe what the report is about. For example, was it a paper on bodyboarding that made him look at it.

Travis Abe's report

Why I chose this report?

The first thing that impressed me most about Travis' home page was the audio effects and background he used. It wasn't the most appealing graphics to look at, in fact he advised a parental discretion. It had skulls and blood visuals, but it caught my attention right away so I wanted to see more. The fact that he took the time to do all these special effects already told me he was interested in getting his point across to everyone.

How I made this choice?

Generation 7 was my first choice as to where I wanted to go to because I wanted to get some ideas from this generation to use in my reports. For example, Travis had sound effects that grabbed my attention. It was the second person I browse through in this generation when I made my choice. I took about 5 minutes to look through his reports, then moved on to another generation.

What this report is about?

One of Travis' reports is on the "Portrayals of Driving Behavior on TV--Good or Bad?" He mentions how driving that is portrayed in movies, television, or in commercials can influence that way a person drives. For example, he uses the movie "The Rock" and the scene where the actor is driving recklessly on the streets. He feels that when people see this type of behavior on the screen, it will influence people to do the same. I agreed with him that the media doesn't affect the way a person drives, but it does depend on the way the person feels.

Reactions

I was quite impressed with Travis' sound and images effect. As a beginner, he seems to know a lot about publishing a web page and getting people's attention, because it caught mine right away. The contents of his presentation really interest me because I am one of those who can be a reckless driver. I was impressed by how detailed he went into how the media can influence people to bad driving habits. I felt that some of the examples he used showed how it can influence bad driving habits. I think that he should have used specific examples of how a person was influenced by a movie or commercial they had seen. I think that if he went more into depth about what makes a person is influenced by what they see influence the way they drive.

Gary's report

Why I chose this report?

The first thing that impressed me about Gary's homepage his background and how simple it was. It wasn't distracting to my eyes. His points were clear, for example, he didn't have long descriptions about his links and were straight to the point. Like all other homepages, in their links, their summaries were long and had too much information. I like how his was short and to the point.

How I made this choice?

After going through generation 7, I moved down to generation 6. I went through all the homepages of 459 when I came to Gary's homepage. I spent about 5 minutes looking through his reports and when I saw his report on Driving Personality Make-over," I was interested in this so I can benefit from becoming a better driver.

What this report is about?

Gary's report is on "Driving Personality Make-over. Is it for me?" There are three domains for driving personality: (1)affective (feeling, motives), (2)cognitive (thoughts, judgements), (3)sensorimotor domains (physical sensations or actions). By having these you can improve your driving skills by appreciating the privilege to drive. There were 3 steps to improving driving habits: (1)being aware of your feelings, thoughts and how you react, (2)the self-witnessing technique, for example recording your feelings by writing them down, and (3)the self-modifications technique for example, when someone cuts you off, think about how the other person is feeling. By taking these steps into consideration, you can become a better driver.

Reactions

I was impressed by started his report. He tells us how a driving personality makeover takes place by giving us the three domains of driving. Then he goes into depth of how to improve your driving personality. I felt that he explained to me what it was that I needed to know about driving personality makeover and how to go about doing it in a way that I could understand. For example, he had personal experiences that he shares and how going through the steps to improve helped him become a better driver. I felt that he didn't leave out anything that was important. I did find that his personal examples were quite long. I thought it wasn't necessary because he could have explained it in less than a paragraph rather than two to get his point across. If I were to expand on his report, I would look at research to see whether the self-witnessing and self-modification techniques actually made a person be more conscious about how they are driving.

Leslie Ann's report

Why I chose this report?

The first thing that impressed me about Leslie's homepage was how her table was set up. Her table was small yet had all the information she needed to make links to. She listed a lot of people, but she organized it well so that it all fit. She also had a lot of information that was useful, for example, her descriptions were clear, to help me understand the people she visited before.

How I made this choice?

I actually was getting tired by now having to go through about 30 homepages, so I when I got to Leslie's homepage I choose her report to be the last one to look at. I looked at all the homepages in her generation and I choose Leslie because I was tired of browsing.

What this report is about?

Leslie's report was on the "Social Psychology of Web Architect" and "How I stopped worrying & learned to love the Web." As a first time user, she was frustrated like I am right now. As she got to know about the HTML better, she discovered the fun things about making web pages. For example, she used her own creativity to create a homepage that fits her personality. She visited Macmillian's HTML workshop to help create her homepages. She also lists what she feels to be in the "sucky" category for HTML commands. For example, loud background images. She felt that if she couldn't read the text, why bother even trying.

Reactions

She having different feelings about the Web impressed me. She has turned her worries into something she loves and I hope I can do the same. Her page seems simple and if she can do it, I know I can. Her content of her report was useful to me because I was having problems with the HTML commands. I think that in her report she could have added a sample page of an HTML document instead of reading another text. I did appreciate that she had a link to an HTML workshop, though. I learned how to make a text blink. Her strong points were that she added her personal views about what should and shouldn't be added to homepages. I think that she could have brought HTML to another level by explaining that there are other ways of publishing a web page on the internet.

Comparison with other reports

Being that this is our first web report, I think that everyone did what was asked. Some students who knew how to create better web pages for example adding pictures, impressed me a lot. My report was very simple and I feel that I did pretty well on this report. Using the basic HTML commands, instead of Netscape composer, to create this page took a lot of work, but I learned the basic fundamentals of creating web reports. Everyone seemed to have a lot to say about the previous generations. We seemed to be impressed by their work and hope we can impress the future generation with ours. The previous generation also gave us an incentive to create wonderful web pages with exciting information.

Suggestions for Future Generations

To the future generation, all I have to say is don't give up. This is the hardest part because it is the first report. After the first one, it does get easier. It will take some time, but in the end, it all pays off. You learned how to create your first web report and now you are ready to create those amazing pages filled with exciting information. Take this as the first stepping stone to success on the internet.
