Helpful Hints for Surving this Computer Psychology Class

Table of Contents

It is taking too long to type out my report in HTML
My Graphics aren't showing up online
The graphics still aren't showing up online
I don't have enough time to put it all in the report
I can't figure it out
I want to work from home, and I don't have any software to upload my pages
Where else can I go to for help
I can't get a title in the title field
I can't figure out what to put into the table of contents

1. Creating your web pages. Use Word97 to type your documents, and then save them as whatever.html. You can put graphics and bullets and whatever you want into your document, but then you must go to the 2nd hint.

2. If you put graphics, including bullets, pre-made web pages from a wizard, when you upload your page into the soc.hawaii.edu directory, you must upload the .gif, .jpg files, and any others as well. These must be put into your Icon folder that Dr. James tells you to create in part 8.

3. Once you have done this, you will have to go back into your document and in the code for your icons and pictures, you will have to add the entire location name. Save your document. Go to View, HTML source. Start editing. For example, this page has those leaves down the side...and originally it showed in the code: Background="image15.gif" Now, I have to change it to: Background="http://www.soc.hawaii.edu/leonj/409bs99/korff/icons/image15.gif

If I don't do this, backgrounds, pictures, and icons will never appear on your web page.

4. I found it helpful to type the document first and then add any bullets or icons.

5. Use your HTML book. It is priceless when trouble shooting for this project.

6. If you don't have the WS_FTP software, you can download it for free. After 30 days or so, you will receive a message warning you that the software is about to expire...it does not. I used it all semester.

7. If you have any repeaters (people who have taken the class or Dr. James before) in your class...use them. Ask them questions. Have them help you in lab time. They've already done it and they are more than willing to help.

Just like me, so, if you are still stuck, E-Mail Me and I will try to help each one of you individually.

8. To title your document, to get the FN LN, TITLE, GEN... into your document, while in WORD, go to file, properties, then type the title in the title field. Every report that you must complete for this course is titled differently, so check the instructions very carefully.

9. Table of Contents must include a title for each asterisked section of the instructions. Read carefully, because some sections have multi parts and each part is to be given a subtitle and placed into the table of contents. Dr. James takes off points for not following these instructions..
