MINING THE GENERATIONAL CURRICULUM
THE WEB PAGE AND LAB REPORTS OF DELIA BADUA TOP
After exploring various other web pages of Dellia's peers I concluded that this web page was an average example of the ability of the first generation students to construct a web page. I wanted to get a good picture of at what level were students during this first year of web construction.
I started exploring by going directly to the link in the G11 Home page that brings you to the all generations awards page. I decided to explore every generation starting with generation one. I then went back to generation one and explored various students web pages. I went through about five students web pages until I got to this students one.
On Dellia's home page I found a link with her lab reports. She discussed the procedures she went through each week, which was very similar to our Internet literacy exercises. This included a report of how she did on each. She gave various comments on how she felt on each exercise.
I was impressed to see that the 1st generation did a very good job of creating a web page that allowed myself to access all topics of the site easily. She had a nice list of all the weeds labs and different links to each sub topic of each week that needed to be explored.
I explored another students web page. Diane Beauchemins lab reports were a little different. She had many live links within her text. Her reports were a little bland in appearance, yet her humor and writing in the text made up for any lack of aesthetic creativity.
I went on to explore another student's lab report. Beverly Diaz talked about her experiences with email. This student was definitely less "link happy" in that she had only a few live links compared to the previous student?s page that I explored. I was also interested that all three students had alternative web pages. This students was called her graphical web page and it had a picture of her psy 409 class.
THE WEB PAGE AND REPORTS OF CHERYL CHOE
I explored through generation two, but I decided I needed to skip that generation to explore Generation 3. I clicked through a few students? homepages before this one. I was also interested in the difference in the class main page itself. I was also interested in the differences in the class main pages themselves.
I picked her page because I liked the subtle colors and design of Cheryl page. She had palm trees on little deserted islands on the top and a simple colorful chart with her different links clearly displayed. Her page took up only one page which I liked a lot.
STEPS THAT LED ME TO THIS REPORT
After accessing her web page by clicking through the generations to three. I clicked through her reports to explore what was on her page. The usual, a link to Dr.James home page, her reports and her email button. One thing that was different was a link to a page she called Confessions: My current concerns and worries. These sounded interesting so I clicked on it and decided I would talk more on this self created report of hers.
The topic of the page was labeled Confessions: My current concerns and worries. The content was a short paragraph, which asked you questions concerning your mental state, like your anxiety. Going on, there is a space you can click on to allow you to write down all of your worries and fears and send them to her page. After that, you can read your worries or those of other students who accessed this page and left a log. I thought of it as a cute way to let out your feelings and thoughts. What I call venting. Many people have accessed this site and have left their confessions of their concerns and worries.
I liked the page. To me, I saw a small difference in the structure of the web pages and reports between generation one and three. Generation one had different reports. In generation three the students no longer had weekly reports in the same fashion as generation one did. Gen. 3 did however have a report in which they did have to show their progress on their aspects of creating a web page. I noticed that this students graphics were not much more elaborate or complex than the first generation. I enjoyed the page that this student published on her page. Her confessions page was unique and refreshing. Reading other peoples worries and fears really put my own worries and concerns into perspective. I enjoyed it.
The content of this student?s report was fine. Her web page was neatly organized. Not much elaboration was done on the aesthetics. Viewing other students pages ended up showing me two things, that some students pages were just as bland, and that a few were greatly elaborated and were covered with many boxes, icons, and buttons.
THE WEB PAGE AND REPORTS OF SCOTT CHANG.
I chose this web page because of the number of pictures up of the page. He had very playful pictures. One was of Buzz Light-year from toy story. And another was of one of the 101 Dalmatians. Again like the others I felt that he had a very average web page for the level of his generation. I decided this after looking through the majority of the web pages. I chose his newsgroups report because that is going to be my next project and I wanted to see how he did it. If he had an interesting site on his page like the Cheryls, Confessions page I would have looked at it instead. This report also seemed to be well put together.
STEPS THAT LED ME TO THIS REPORT
I again went to the list of generational awards. I decided to skip generation four and go onto generation five. I have consistently skipped the even generations to pick a page from the odd generations. I then looked around Scotts web page and decided on looking into his Newsgroups file.
I opened up his newsgroups report to investigate what subjects he elaborated on. He had chosen a news group on Basketball. He had a few good sections that I enjoyed. In one section he talked about spamming. Since I also hat spam I was interested in this topic. I explored this section to find out that people can spam newgroups also. They send mail to all the newgroups to advertise. Their advertisements have nothing to do with the newsgroup yet they are posted by inconsiderate people. Spamming takes up a lot of time and can be irritating.
I enjoyed Scott's web page and his report on newsgroups. I feel I could have done the same thing as him. His web page wasn't too elaborate and his newsgroups was very informative
.After looking at other newsgroups reports I was impressed with the amount of information other students had on the newsgroups they covered. I thought that Scott had done an excellent job covering all aspects of his newsgroup.
THE WEB PAGE AND REPORTS OF TRAVIS ABE
I chose this report because as soon as I opened it, I knew I had to write about this web page. Very bright and grabbing graphics is what I saw. It grabbed a hold of me as soon as I opened it. It said: Welcome to Trav's school of offensive driving. It had a large X over it and small print said: Trav's school of offensive driving is permanently closed.
STEPS THAT LED TO THIS REPORT.
First to be accessed was the generations eleven main page. From there I accessed the all generations awards page. I chose to skip generation six and move on to generation seven. Browsing through the different web pages this students immediately caught my eye.
To summarize his work I chose one of Travis's reports. The title of this report was : Portrayals of driving behavior on T.V.--good or bad? Also: Do people know what is real and what isn't these days????
First came his introduction and he discussed how driving is portrayed in movies. He asked the question: Do people know this isn't real? Next came his observations and analysis. He viewed movies and paid attention to cartoons and commercials on television. One of the worst movies he watched was Ace Ventura pet detective. He gave it a rating of four on a one through ten scales for most influence on driving habits. He also talked about how the report influenced his thoughts and way of thinking. He said it: made him realize that bad driving in the media is getting out of hand.
I felt like this was a well thought up report with a lot of information and thoughts from the writer. I feel like I have learned a lot about how to construct a report after looking at this one. He gave some interesting information and his overall appearance on his front page would bring anyone to his reports, I?m sure of it.
After reading his report on how television influences our thoughts and reality on driving, I went to another web page to view the same report from another student. This other student had a very similar way at attacking the report. Her report was shorter in some places and longer in others. It seems like both authors focused on different aspects of the topic. I feel that Travis did a good job on his report about television and driving influence and a great job on his home page.
I HAD A GREAT TIME LOOKING THROUGH VARIOUS WEB PAGES AND GENERATIONS. I FELT LIKE THIS REPORT GAVE ME THE OPPORTUNITY OR RATHER FORCED ME INTO THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE ALL THE GENERATIONS AND GET A GREAT OVERVIEW ON WHERE THIS ALL STARTED HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED AND IMPROVED AND WHERE I AM GOING TO GO NOW.
