Thanks for reading my report.  My report focuses on two topics.  My first topic is about rage and anger, especially in regards to children.  My heart goes out to children who are literally suffering in their minds, and it comes out as anger or rage.  My second topic is in regards to driving distractions.  It is amazing how many people are distracted every day while driving.  What are these driving distractions? What consequences are there when we are distracted while driving?  I will try to answer these questions and others.  I will also try to find ways in which we can become more responsible and less distracted drivers.

What is Rage and Anger especially in regards to children?(1)

A) The article explains the differences between rage and anger.  Anger is also broken down to healthy vs. unhealthy anger.  Rage is a shame-based expression of anger.  It is by definition abuse.  Ragers react to strong emotions with rage.  These strong emotions could be feelings of fear, shame, sadness, guilt, low self-esteem, feelings of inadequacy, guilt or loss.  Raging gives them feelings of power which offsets shame, guilt, fears and feelings of inadequacy.   Rage when observed is screaming, becoming physical such as striking out – hitting others or oneself, violence or threats of violence, manipulation, silence, emotional blackmail and is used to punish others.

There is such a thing as healthy anger.  Everybody gets angry just as long as you can control yourself.  Healthy anger involves confronting what makes you angry.  It is not used to punish, it is not violent, does not manipulate.  It involves expressing anger, by discussing it and moving through the anger.  Therefore, healthy anger is not stuffed down and ignored.   I do believe when you are angry, it is not good to keep it all inside because one day it can all come out of a person in the form of  Rage.  This article can be found at www.recovery-man.com/abusive/rage_vs_anger.htm .

B) My initial reaction to the article is that it hit the definitions of rage and anger right on the nose.  From what I have heard and seen in my life and in the lives of others, it is sad but true, that rage is really a cry from someone who is hurting inside.

Rage is such an interesting topic and I think no person is immune from experiencing this feeling some time in their lives, however, it is very dangerous when it becomes part of a person’s personality, a part of their everyday lives.  In other words, it is very dangerous when anger gets out of CONTROL!

C) I agree with what the article says and it has very useful information.  If people know the differences between healthy vs. unhealthy anger, they may stop their anger before it turns into unhealthy anger.  I know I have tried to do it myself.  If I am consciously more aware, I try to calm down before so the anger does not get out of hand.

The article can also help to understand others who are experiencing rage, especially those experiencing it on an everyday basis.  Although the article itself was not specifically about rage and anger with children, rage and anger had to be defined first.

D) I found this article by looking in the web at rage and anger.  When I just looked up rage, it gave me some other information that had nothing to do with rage.  It was kind of frustrating at first, but it was not too difficult once I had put in the words, rage and anger.

It amazes me how much information there is on the internet for almost any subject you can imagine.  The internet is truly the way to go.

What is Rage and Anger especially in regards to our children? (2)

A) This article is entitled, “Rescuing a child from anger.”  When parents and teachers see a child acting out, or becoming out of control with anger, the parents and teachers first thoughts are that this child had better shape up or else!   This articles says that anger is destroying the quality of life for our children and for their families.  Many families no matter how much effort they put forth to help their child, the child does not get better, and the anger is still there.

The article goes on to say that for some children, they may have an underlying emotional disorder that includes clinical depression.  So the article is stating that depression, not momentary frustration, is the cause of a child’s anger.   The article wants people to know that there is help for our children and that a child can be “Rescued from Anger.”

The article goes on to explain about possible diagnoses and treatments.  Diagnosis include depression, bipolar disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) which are among the more common diagnoses associated with anger.  These illnesses can be treating a child’s anger more difficult.  Treatment many times includes counseling and may also require medication.  This article can be found at www.post-gazette.com/healthscience/20010911hangry4.asp .

B) My initial reaction to the article was that I had found a great article, a great website.  Again, this subject is so interesting because it affects our children, who are our future. Just the title alone captivated me, “Rescuing a child from anger.”

I feel we all have a responsibility to all the children of the world to rescue them from anger.  Children are God’s special  little people. They are our hope and the future of the world.  Let us all do our part to help the children of the world.

C) I feel the article will be very helpful especially to those who have a child with unhealthy anger or rage.  There is always hope for a child, but the caretakers not only have to be patient, but very persistent.  I believe this is where unconditional love comes into play.  Although some may not agree, I do believe in unconditional love.  The caregivers may hate the actions of the child, but still truly love the child.  Love cannot die because someone does something wrong or bad.

So, I do agree with the article and find to be very useful.  I am glad I chose this article and hope you will check it out especially if you have to deal with an angry child either at home or at work.

D) I found this article by looking in the web and putting in the words rage and anger and children.  I came up with a lot of good information.  I searched in the web and in google.com both of which came up with very good info regarding rage and anger.

It was not difficult at all to find the information I was looking for but there is so much information out there on rage and anger that I had to narrow it down to what I was interested in and also what I felt my readers would be interested in.

What is Rage and Anger especially in regards to our children? (3)

A) Medication is used for a lot on children who are diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to help control their behaviors.  According to the article I found at www.freerepublic.com/forum/a38d79a0c39f9.htm, “Ritalin Is Poison.”

Why are America’s children experiencing an explosion of new mental diseases and disorders like ADHD that were seemingly never heard of some 30 years                ago?  When I was a child, I never heard of the terms ADD or ADHD.  Everyone in my class went to school and on the average behaved in class and assumed they were behaving at home.   Life then seemed so much simpler for children.  This article goes on to say that so many children today are out of control and refuse to listen to their parents and teachers and many of them are driven to violent behaviors.

Many of children with these behaviors are much too often diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and ADHD.  According to the article, these diagnoses are complete frauds and there is no scientific evidence to prove either exists.  Many children are put on a behavior-altering drug called Ritalin, which is suppose to be the miracle answer to children who have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.

B) My initial reaction was TOTAL agreement that Ritalin is Poison.  I have believed it for a long time and this is what caught my interest about it.  I am so glad that other people feel the same way I do.  I feel children are given medication for something that a good diet, good counseling, behavior modification, a more naturalistic approach like taking a dietary supplement such as beCALM’d ( read on for information on beCALM’d) and a lot of prayer could be done in place of medication to help in a child’s recovery from his or her anger.  I know that many people have put forth so much effort to help their children and nothing seems to work.  They are desperate and totally frustrated.  Therefore, they turn to medication.  I totally understand and sympathize with these parents.

I understand also that sometimes Ritalin or something similar has to be used to help people.  I know my uncle who is in his 80’s would be a total vegetable if he did not take Ritalin, but when he takes it, he is alert and can function like normal.  I say for people like him and because he made the decision himself to take the drug, it is okay for him to take it.  Children, often times, are not given the choice and simply have to take it.  How does it really make them feel and does it really help them?

C) My final opinion of the article is that I agree on the part that Ritalin is a kind of poison.  It is like poisoning our children, instead of really helping.   There are some parts of the article that I do not agree totally with when it talks about that the psychology industry is not opposed to simply making up the diseases and disorders if there is money to be made.

I am sure there is a lot of money to be made in the psychology and pharmaceutical industries, and I have always felt that these doctors, researchers really do not know what is wrong with our children and have to name it something.  At the same time I believe there are a lot of people who really want to help and truly believe that these drugs are going to help children with behavior problems.

D) I looked up the word Ritalin on the web.  It gave a lot of good information on Ritalin, but also gave good information on other medications used for behavior problems, as well as more naturalistic alternatives.  I liked this aspect of it.

I found a wonderful site called beCALM’d.  I will be expanding more about it in one of the sections.  Read on!

What is Rage and Anger especially in regards to our children? (4)

A) The following information came from a book called, “The Angry Child: Regaining Control When You Are Out of Control”, by Dr. Tim Murphy and         Loriann Hoff Oberlin.  It defines anger as being normal and an appropriate response for frustration, but for some children anger is an ingrained behavior that causes them and those around them needless misery.  In Dr. Murphy’s book, he explains both the roots and solutions for uncontrollable anger in children that will help them to develop new ways to understand their feelings and interactions with others.

Dr. Murphy is a child psychologist and a Pennsylvania State Senator who combines his 25 years of experience in working with children and their families in his book.  His intention of the book is to provide and guide families in handling some of the toughest situations families face.  This book gives many practical solutions for turning these kids around.

B) What a great book!  Dr. Murphy makes a lot of sense in his book.  The title itself just caught my attention right away.  No fancy words to the title, “The Angry Child, Regaining control when you are out of control” is such a positive statement.

I felt this book would help people who are struggling with children who have problems with rage and anger.  The credentials that Dr. Murphy has also impressed me.  It was good to know that he has 25 years of experience as a child psychologist.

C) My final opinion of the information in the book is that every parent, teacher, doctor that deal with children should get the book.  It has a wealth of information that can literally help them and more importantly, the children.

The information is extremely useful and fascinating reading.  I would recommend it even to people who do not deal with children.

D) I found the book at a bookstore. I asked the people at the bookstore for books in regards to children and rage or children with anger.  This was one of the books they found for me.

I looked in Hamiton Library for some books on anger, but I liked this one better and decided to go with it.

What is Rage and Anger especially in regards to our children?(5)

A) This article has to do with an alternative for children who are have behavioral problems such as Attention deficit disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).  This particular alternative is called beCALM’d and is a natural dietary supplement which is suppose to counteract stress. You may find information on beCALM’d at www.neurogenesis.com.

NeuroGenesis also makes other products that promote good health naturally.  So, do not forget to check out their website I have listed above.  I did not want to get too off the topic, so I am not talking about their other products.

B) My initial reaction is that it was GREAT because it is wonderful to have natural alternatives to a strong medication like Retalin.  I was so interested in it because I know of one too many people who are using it.

I know and hear of many people who are looking for more natural solutions to their children’s problems with anger.  There is one testimony I found at www.adhdrelief.com that touched my heart.  The testimony is from a parent whose fifteen year old son who had severe ADHD was introduced to beCALM’d about six years ago.  The parent said that all their lives have been changed, not just the son’s.  Check out the website so you can read for yourself the parent’s testimony.

C) I salute companies like NeuroGenesis.  I feel that this kind of natural alternative brings hope to so many caregivers out there.  It is extremely useful and comes at a time when our world is in desperate need for this kind of alternative.

I feel parents need to really check out the right alternatives for their particular situation.  The main thing is to get educated in what alternatives are out there and do some research on it before actually using something. It is not that I do not believe in doctors because I do, but when it comes to children taking strong medication, it is something to really think about!

D) I am not sure exactly how I stumbled across this site, but I am grateful I did.  I know I was looking up information on ADD and ADHD and I also put in the word alternative.  Searching for the right alternatives is not always easy.

You have to be very careful.  I know people can be skeptical when it comes to alternatives for their problems.  I was before, but not anymore.

The internet has a wealth of information, so research and study, research and study.

What are driving distractions and what are the consequences of driving under the influence of distractions?(1)

A) This article entitled “Distractions While Driving” starts off to say that today’s busy women are always looking for ways to find more time.  The automobile is one of the places they have found to make use of their idle time while driving.  Distractions take away from our primary responsibility of driving safely. Distractions cause us to be inattentive to driving safely that greatly increases the chance of an accident.  The article can be found at http://abcnews.go.com/sections/auto/DailyNews/wm_distractions_000818.html.

The article provides information on recent statistics of fatal car crashes due to inattentive driving.  Another interesting thing that the article states is that according to a report by Farmers Insurance Group in the fall of 1999, it found that both men and women admit to shaving and applying make-up while going to work.  A survey found that 5.5 percent of men and 2.1 percent of women admit to shaving and 18.7 percent of women and 1.3 percent of men apply make-up while driving.  Eight percent of men and women style their hair on the way to and from work. The article gives more statistics in regards on how most people think they drive and also gives some safety tips.

B) I thought it was a good article. What caught my attention was not only the title of the article but that it started off talking about women and driving. Being a woman myself, I could relate although I do not shave in the car, but I do admit applying make-up or brushing my hair in the car very rarely

It is amazing to me how many people think they actually drive well according to the article and drivers incomes make a difference.   For example, 29.2 percent of drivers with incomes in excess of $100,000 are dashboard drummers and play imaginary drums on their dashboards and steering wheels, while only 19 percent of those with incomes less than $25,000 are inclined to drum. I thought this was interesting.

C) I feel it was a good article and agree with it.  It is useful to know this kind of information because perhaps if we are more aware, then we will want to do our part to be safer and less distracted drivers.

000

D) I found the article by looking up driving distractions on the web.  There were so many to choose from, but this one caught my attention and felt it would be useful for my report.

What are driving distractions and what are the consequences of driving under the influence of distractions?(2)

A) A very interesting article at www.s-t.com/daily/01-01/01-10-01/a03tr140.htm is about driving distractions and what they are.  The article also states that 25 car accidents reported by the nation’s police each year are triggered by some form of distraction.  It goes on to say that 10,000 of 41,000 traffic deaths each year are attributed to driver distractions.

A $10 million initiative by General Motors is called “SenseAble driving.  The SenseAble driving education program has some anti-distraction tips listed in the article.  Some of these driving tips are 1) Keep your hands on the road by using a hands-free telephone, and employing memory dialing and directory assistance when possible. 2) Keep your hands on the wheel by programming your favorite radio stations, and arranging tapes and CDs in an accessible spot.

B) I thought the title was catching “Distractions inside the vehicle may be driving us into accidents.”  This article was one of the more interesting articles I found on driving distractions because it not only names specific distractions but also talks about the research that is being done by General Motors and their SenseAble driving education program.

This research would include a nationwide education program aimed at helping people keep their attention on the road.  This research if done right, would allow them to find out what amount of driver satisfaction is acceptable, and how much it takes to risk an accident.  I salute companies like General Motors for taking their time and money to want to educate people regarding driving distractions and creating a program to promote safer driving.

C) I feel it is a great article that is very useful.  The information includes statistics and tips to promote safe driving that is very important.

All drivers have a responsibility to drive as safely as possible.  Safe driving tips can and should be used by all drivers.

This article at least made me feel that companies like General Motors because they are in the automotive industry can greatly influence other automobile industries to do the same and promote safe driving programs.

D) I found this article by looking on the web and looking up driving distractions.  I feel if you want information on driving distractions this is the way to go.

There is so much information out there on the web that you have to narrow it down to what you want to be concentrating on in your topic.

What are driving distractions and what are the consequences of driving under the influence of distractions? (3)

This article from USA talks about how driving distractions are a major concern today.  Federal safety regulators are launching a major study into the risks of using cell phones, Internet devices, and other electronic devices that include navigation systems and in-dash CD players while driving.  The article can be found at www.carsound.com/news/archives/7_18_100_1.shtml

According to a recent study, 25 percent of the 6.3 million crashes each year are caused by drivers distracted by other activities.  The article also states that safety experts say that navigation systems which is one of the hottest new items in cars is the greatest distraction.

B) My initial reaction of the article is that it made me think that with new technology, things really should be safer and life should be simpler, but that is not the case.  It really has caused people to become more distracted while driving for instead of concentrating on their driving, they are using the internet, popping in a CD, talking on a cell phone, e-mailing, using the fax and so on.  Wow, it sounds like almost a whole office!

The article caught my interests because it really is kind of spooky regarding all these fancy devices that are being put into cars or used in cars.  According to Tom Dingus who is director of the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute he said, “If we don’t understand and deal with these devices, by the time we have 20 million of them in cars, it will be too late.

C) I agree with the article that makes people more aware of these things as driving distractions rather than for convenience sake.  What is more important, safety or convenience?  I think one of the problems is that people get away with it once, then twice, and so on and therefore, they just continue with it.  Unless there are stricter laws against such distractions, I am afraid people will continue to use their distracting devices.

I feel it is useful information.  At the same time, a lot of information is just common sense.  People should know that the more gadgets they have to play around with in their cars, the more distracted they are going to be.

D) I found this article by looking up driving distractions on the web.  When I first put in driving, it was not too helpful.  I put in next driving consequences and received information on driving and drinking, then I put in driving distractions and hooray, I got some good information.

The information was not too difficult to find, but again I must emphasize that because there is so much information out there on the web, it must be narrowed down to what you want to concentrate on in your topic.

What are driving distractions and what are the consequences for driving under the influence of driving distractions?(4)

A) This article stated that the National Highway Safety Administration found that eating was a worse distraction than handheld cell phones.   Hagerty Classic Insurance, one of the world’s leading insurers of collectible automobiles compiled a list of the “Ten Most Dangerous Foods to Eat While Driving.”  The article can be found at www.xpresssites.com/lee/lacrosse/xpspecialsections/automotive/story_271394.asp.

The research Team at Hagerty rated common foods eaten in cars according to the degree of distraction, difficulty in eating with only one hand on the wheel, and the foods popularity.  The article lists 10 foods from bad to worst and describes the possible action with the food.   For example, the first food listed is Chocolate: Whatever the driver touches (steering wheel, shift level, clothing) will carry distinctive fingerprints.  Drivers’ reactions are to immediately clean the stains, distracting them from the road and the task at hand which is driving

B) My initial reaction to the article is that I thought it was interesting that the National Highway Safety Administration found that eating was a worse distraction than cell phones.  I also found it very interesting to find out what the ten most dangerous foods were to eat while driving and the action of the driver which is dependent on the kind of food.

I have tried eating while driving and it is not easy, but when you are hungry and have to eat on the run, you are sometimes forced to eat while driving.  I am not saying it is a good thing to do, though.

C) I feel the article was interesting and humorous.  It certainly made me think twice of eating while I am driving.  Perhaps it will enlighten others to do the same.  Its usefuless hopefully will make people more aware of the dangers of eating while driving especially specific foods that when spilled take a driver’s attention away from the road.

D) Again, I found the article while searching on the web.  Of course there were so much information on the topic.  As I was searching, this particular article caught my attention.  I went through many articles before I finally decided on this one and thought it would be interesting to put in my report.

What are driving distractions and what are the consequences for driving under the influence of driving distractions?(5)

A) This article can be found at www.geocities.com/larrytucaz/article1.html.  It is entitled “Should We Eliminate All Driving Distractions?  Of course we should not, but I feel the person who wrote the article wanted to make a point about the dangers of driving distractions.  Should legislators ban certain things from being used on done while driving.  Some of the suggestions made are funny and may seem a little silly, but when it comes to safety while driving, they do not seem so silly after all.

A couple of examples given are that teenage boys and girls should be required to ride in separate seat so no touchy-feely stuff can go on and that we should put large, dense trees or bushes besides all major highways so we will not get tempted to sightsee taking our eyes off the road.

B) I thought it was interesting, but my initial reaction was how can we eliminate all driving distractions.  It would be impossible to eliminate them all.  We can cut down on them by becoming more aware of them and being more responsible drivers.

C) I feel the writer of the article wanted to make a point no matter how silly his suggestions may seem.  I do agree that we need to have stricter laws in regard to all the distractions we are allowed to do in the car while we are driving like using a cell phone, eating, drinking, smoking and the lists goes on.  Just a split second that a driver takes their eyes away from the road could result in a very unfortunate accident.

The article also mentions that young children in the car and sleep deprivation are also key driving distractions and expands more about them in the article.  So, yes the article is useful and it gets it point across.

D) I found the article searching on the web.  The title caught my attention at first as I was searching and as I read it thought it would be good to use for my report.

CONCLUSION:

I felt a sense of accomplishment after I did my report.  Boy, there sure is a whole lot of information out there especially on the internet.  There was so much to choose from that I had to narrow it down to what I felt would be interesting and beneficial to the reader because it was also interesting to me.  My topic of rage and anger in regards to children is of great interest and concern to me.  There so many sub-topics, but I wanted to first of all define anger and rage, then more specifically children and rage, followed by diagnoses and treatments, and also what can be done to help these children.

Driving distractions was easier, but there was so much information that I needed to narrow it down to what are driving distractions, consequences, what is being done to be safer and less distracted drivers.  I found some of the titles of some of the articles I saw while looking up information on this topic to be funny but true.

I found the whole experience raised my interests in both topics.  I now want to find out more about rage and anger in children, and in the future get involved with programs that can help children and their families.  I also hope to be a more conscious and safer driver and hope those who read my report will do the same.
