Introduction:

My name is Mike Choi and I am a student in Dr. James Psy 459 class which discusses men and women in the workplace. We are Generation 19 which means that this is the 19th semester. Being G19 has it’s advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages you’ll find being G19 is that there are 18 prior generation webpages that you can review which can help a lot when you start to create your own webpages, you’ll find many ideas and creative thoughts in many of the prior homepages. One of the disadvantages is that since you are G19, there is a certain level of progress that needs to be in our homepages and reports.

This is the third report that was required for completing this class, we had to do two oral presentation during this semester on a book by Deborah Tannan “Talking from 9-5”. For myself, I had to research on a article for Chapter 7 “Gender Communication”, and for my second presentation, it was on Chapter 8 “ What’s sex got to do with it.

This report will focus on steps I took to strengthen my oral presentation skills. There will be a pre-ratings before I started on my first oral presentation, and then a post-ratings scale after I have completed and got my grade and feedback from the instructor and other students in the class.

 First Oral Presentation:

2. Looking for sites relating to my topic.

- felt nervous because I hate doing oral presentation.

- It shouldn’t be too bad.

3. downloaded several interesting sites on my topic.

- excited to see many sites relating to my topic.

- I shouldn’t have a hard finding a decent article.

4. Read all three articles.

-confused on the first two articles I read.

-Maybe it isn’t as easy as I thought.

6. Read the last article.

- happy that this article is understandable.

- I hope I can write a good outline with so little information.

7. Prepared my outline.

- Mad that I don’t have enough information.

-I should’ve started earlier on this project.

8. Printed out my outline.

- Unsatisfied with the work I have done.

- I just hope I can explain it well in class.

9. Practiced my presentation.

- Very nervous cause I’m bad at giving oral presentation.

- I hope I don’t screw up and embarrass myself.

10. Presented in class.

-You looked down instead in the audience 90% of the presentation.

-You shouldn’t chew gum.

-Recommended that I take a look at other students report for reference.

My Errors While Doing Oral Presentation #1

Description of Error

Error Classification

Explanation For Error

Solution

Didn’t do enough research on my topic.

Major

Since I had two other mid-terms to prepare for, I was short of time.

For the second presentation, I will be sure to prepare way ahead of time, and make sure that there are nothing due during the week of my presentation.

Didn’t practice my speech for the presentation.

Major

Since time was a big factor in this presentation, I wasn’t able to prepare adequately.

Next time I will practice my words in accordance with my outline.

Looked down 90% of the time.

Major

I was so nervous of what others would think of my half prepared presentation that I was embarrassed to look at them in the eye.

Next time I will be prepared so I could feel more confident in looking at people and feeling competent about my presentation.

Chewed gum while presenting

Major

I forgot to throw away my gum before the presentation because I was so nervous.

I won’t chew gum before my presentation starts.

Didn’t explain thoroughly my outline.

Major

Because I wasn’t prepared, I didn’t know what to say during each section of my outline.

Next time I’ll be prepared and make sure to take good notes.

Errors:

First of all I’m very bad at giving oral presentations, even when I’m prepared, however this time I wasn’t prepared, so my oral presentation was even worse, like pouring salt on a wound. During my presentation, I kept snapping my jaw because I had gum in my mouth, that was due to the lack of confidence giving this presentation. Also during the presentation, I didn’t look up at the audience because I was embarrassed for not being prepared, and felt bad because other classmates had good rapport with the audience.

Second oral presentation:

Chapter 8

Step

My Affective Information Behavior

My Cognitive Information Behavior

1. read Chapter 8 while on the threadmill

- felt good killing two birds with one stone.

- thinking about ways to improve on my next presentation.

2. reread chapter 8

- proud to understand this chapter.

- I figure I will read it several times until I can memorize it.

3. prepared a ouline.

- little stressed because  I didn’t know how I was going to organize my outline.

- I’ll combine several paragraphs so it will be more understandable as long as I can explain it well.

4. wrote notes on a different sheet of paper to supplement my outline.

- happy that I’m not on a time budget since I started a week in advance.

- thinking which areas will the students find amusing.

5. practiced my speech with my notes and outline.

- laughing because I know my audience will enjoy this presentation.

- what if I freeze up and forget everything?

6. presented in class

- nervous but felt more confident since I was prepared this time.

- everyone seems interested, I hope they forgot about my first presentation.

11. filled out post-ratings

- relieved that this was over with.

- now all I have is the third report and this semester is over.

Question 10: I felt that it was skills that has made me successful at completing this task.

Question 11:motivation was same because I knew I had to pass this course.

Question 13: amount of effort stayed the same after completing both presentation.

Facing a due date:

I was very stressed finishing this report because I had so many other priorities that I had to accomplish, especially when I forgot to save my previous version of the report. Right  now its 11:33 pm and I wish I had more time but I will have to cut it short.

Conclusion:

I have learned a lot from doing these two presentation, I realized that I can’t just wing it and expect to be ok, however I noticed that when I put more effort I tend to do better at thing.

Advice to future generation:

Just do your best and if you have trouble, look at previous generations webpage to get ideas to aid in you reports. Make sure to read the chapters thoroughly so you can understand and give good criticism to others.
