Report 3

Introduction

The focus of report 3 is on Strengthening the oral Presentations. The presentations were based upon the chapters in the required text for the class. Talking from 9 to 5: Women and Men in the Workplace: Language, Sex, and Power written by Deborah Tannen (2001). There are nine chapters that we, the students, are to choose to present on. We were required to participate in two presentaions. The choices were presentaions on two chapters, one chapter and a similar article to a chapter, or two similar articles to two chapters. In presenting our chapter and/or articles we were to read through, take notes, and concentrate on the subject for a few days. Other resources and help that we could use was to go to the web or library databases and research information that would be relevant to the chapter. Our presentations should be at least 19 minutes without exceeding to more than 20 minutes. We were also required to prepare an outline for everone to look over as we recap while presenting. In the outline we were to include the biblioraphy or links of that which we attained the information from. As a bonus in the presentaion we must state our opinions and interpretations for each information or fact that we bring up as we present. Our main pin point is to have the class particpate in the discussions and to have them state their opinions and interpretations as well. In our second presentations we are encouraged to look over our first presentations and then to see what we have to work on and see our strong points on presenting. The following information is the chapters that we are given to present on.

Chapter One: Women and Ment Talking on the Job

Chapter Two: "I'm Sorry, I'm Not Apologizing": Conversational Rituals

Chapter Three: "Why Don't You Say What You Mean?": Indirectness at Work

Chapter Four: Marked: Women in the Workplace

Chapter Five: The Glass Ceiling

Chapter Six: "She's the Boss": Women and Authority

Chapter Seven: Talking Up Close. Status and Connection

Chapter Eight: What's Sex Got to Do with It?

Chapter Nine: Who Gets Heard?: Talking at Meetings

Task 6

Pre-rating: 12/04/03

I.) My mood today is a 10 because of the fact that this is report 3 and that it is the last one for the rest of the semester. I will feel even better once I have completed this report and the knowledge of having to know that I have no more assignments to do.

II.) The task is to upload our report 3 and to make sure that it is completed with every link and information working correctly. Once the report 3 is done we are to email the intructor and confirm with him that we are done with report 3.

III.) I think that this will take less time than the first two reports. The presentation is the easiest part of the class and to upload it as our report 3, it won't be that difficult.

IV.) This task is very important for me to succeed in because the presentations were fun to do. The discussions that I got from the class was very enthusiastic and that the emails that I got back were very positive and helpful on what I should and shouldn't do.

V.) I don't expect that much difficulty in uploading this report because of the fact that I can do this with no challenge.

VI.) I would be very upset if I couldn't succeed inthis task because it is the last one and it is pretty simple to perform.

VII.) I am very sure that I will succeed in performing this task because I had an easy time doing the presentations.

VIII.) I have done the first two reports and they weren't that much of an easy task, but with this task it will be because it didn't take that much time to come up with the articles and that most of my presentations were based on articles similar to the chapters.

IX.) The main reasons why I am able to complete this task is because of the help from others and their feedbacks on my presentation. The skills that I have aqcuired from the first two reports. The other thing is that I have a lot of information to add into this report 3 of mine.

X.) I am very much motivated to keep on trying at this task and to finish this report.

XI.) The computer will make things easier for me because I have saved my presentations onto a disk and that I don't have type it all over again.

XII.) I expect alot of effort in performing this task because it will be simple to do and much fun and enthusiasm to go in to it.

*Below are the two presentations that I chose to present on. The third one is an extra credit that I did with permission from the instructor. My apologies for this, but the first presentation is not avaliable because I coudn't find my hard copy and I wasn't able to save it on a disk. I also wanted to let you know that the first one was not that interesting, the topic was interesting, but the presentation didn't receive that much positvie motivation like the last two. The first one was based on a similar article to chapter 3 from the text. The last two presentations were way better and interesting because of more interaction from the class.

This is the first oral presentation grade that I received from the insrtuctor. He wasn't present at the time due to a meeting in California, but we were able to have a student aide come in and help out with questions we had on our reports.

Hi Tupou Finau,

I recorded a grade of 7 points out of 7.

Sorry I missed your presentation but I heard it was very good and lively.
You will have to rely on student feedback alone this time.

Hey Tupou,

I really enjoyed your presentation.  I think you added a lot of humor with
your good cross cultural examples.  The only constructive criticism I can
offer is.....hmm....in your outline you didn't include titles to the
articles.  Everything else is there though.

Good Job,
Tom Hanson

I.) Domestic Violencehttp://www.marshall.edu/wcenter/domestic_violence.htm

Legal definition for D.V

-When the individuals involved are of the opposite sex and reside or have resided in the same household, have a child in common or are related by blood and marriage.

-Relationship violence is the simple assault or disorderly conduct when the individuals involved are or have been dating (never lived together and do not have a child together) or are gay or lesbian.

-The physical, sexual and/or psychological assaults associated with relationship violence, other related issues which may or may not be criminal (depending on specific facts) include verbal, emotional and/or economic abuse, threats of harm or attacks against property or pets.

Myths and Facts

Myth: “Forced martial sex” is not “real rape.”

Fact: Forced sexual contact from a stranger, between dating partners, or within a marriage is illegal. No relationship justifies forcible sexual behaviors.

Myth: Abuse is a “family matter” and the community should not interfere.

Fact: Assault is assault, rape is rape, and abuse is an abuse, regardless of the relationship between the people. Violence within the family is no more justifiable than violence between strangers.

Myth: Keeping silent about sexual assault or other forms of violence is safer than reporting it.

Fact: Violence that is unreported often result in greater risks for future violence to occur. Without legal counseling intervention, the violence won’t go away.

II.) Major Scientific Study Examines Domestic Violence Among Gay Men http://www.narth.com/docs/domestic.html

-Conducted by researchers with the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies (USC), Whitman-Walker Clinic (Washington, D.C.) and Prevention Research Center, School of Social Work (UW, Seattle).

-Examinees: Three specific types of gay male-to-gay male assault: psychological/symbolic battering, physical battery, and sexual battery.

-Four geographical areas: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York

-Target group are men over the age of 18 that had engaged in homosexual activities since the age of 14.

-Information collected included age, education level, race/ethnicity, employment status, income, sexual description, HIV status, and city of residence.

Interviews covered the most recent five years of their lives, revealing 34% were victims of psychological/symbolic abuse, 22% were physically victimized, and 5.1% experienced sexual abuse. Overall, 39.2% reported on or the other type of battering, of which 18.2% reported being victimized by more than one type of battering over the five-year period.

-Researchers report a high rate of battering within intimate homosexual partnerships, 39% of those studied reporting at least one type of battering by a partner over the last five years.

-In contrast, 7.7% of heterosexual men of all ages report physical or sexual partner abuse during their entire lifetimes.

-Figures were also compared with heterosexual women who had been victims of violence within marriage or while cohabiting with men, also within five-year periods.

-Homosexual men were also substantially higher than heterosexual women: 22%, 11.6%.
