My selection 1:  How Driver's Communicate with Each Other by Brandi Ashby,  G7 459

Why I chose Brandi's report

I chose Brandi's report because I was interested in what she had to say about "How Driver's Communicate with Each Other." After reading her report I was impressed at how she drove around the island acting as a driver witness. The content of her report was easy to read and very interesting. It was not boring or too lengthy at all.

Steps to Brandi's report

The way I navigated myself to Brandi's report was by first going to the generations page. I had to chose a generation that was different from my following selections so I just randomly decided on G7. I chose the 459 home page because I wanted to see a different report from this section on Traffic Psychology. I wasn't that picky so I just clicked on any name which happens to be Brandi Ashby's home page.

Summary of Brandi's report

The report written by Brandi Ashby was on how driver's communicate with each other. In this report she discusses about the different ways driver's communicate to each other. Driver's use both verbal and nonverbal form of communication. According to Brandi, drivers make facial expressions, hand gestures or yell out their windows to relay their messages to other drivers. In her report, Brandi also wrote about her experiences of being a witness driver. She drove around the island observing the driving behaviors of people. What she found was that people in Hawaii are relatively friendly on the road. People often make other drivers merge into their lane. What she found surprising was that drivers hardly yield to pedestrian, which I think is more important in terms of safety. They would stop for a car to enter into their lane but they won't stop to allow a pedestrian to cross the road. I thought that was weird and awkward. Another thing that she observed was that a lot of drivers don't signal for a turn which I see often too.

Reaction to Brandi's report

I thought that Brandi report was an excellent report. I enjoyed reading her observations as a witness driver because it reflects the behaviors of drivers in Hawaii. I wish I was with her too during her observations. The added research that she included into her report was excellent reference source for readers who want more information.

Comparison to other reports

This report is similar to most of the other reports I saw. It was informative and straight to the point. It was clear to read. Not much use of colors like her other peers. Brandi kept her report simple and she made her point clear so that everyone can understand.

My selection 2:  Virtual Online Communities by Jocelyn Manibusan, G10 409

Why I chose Jocelyn's report

I chose Jocelyn's report on Virtual Online Communities, because I was interested in what she had to say about virtual online communities. I don't know much about virtual online communities that I found her report to be very useful in describing and explaining what are virtual online communities and how they are created.

Steps to Jocelyn's report

The steps that I took to get to Jocelyn's report was first going to the awards page. Then, I clicked on generation 10. When I got to G10 instructions for all reports, I went to the 409b class home page and then randomly selected Jocelyn's home page.

Summary of Jocelyn's report

Jocelyn's report discussed the concept of virtual online communities, its purpose, who creates them and why, how does the virtual online communities work, how they spread, and what types are out there which are real time and non-real time. According to Jocelyn, "Virtual online communities are places where people come together to share their thoughts, feelings, and opinions about a particular issue". What she noticed was that virtual online communities was just another medium in which people come together and interact with one another. People communicated through computer mediated communication (CMC) via chat rooms, e-mail, forums, newsgroups and the like. She also talked about a case history of a virtual community which was Cafe' Utne created by Eric Utne in 1995. The goal of the Cafe' Utne was to revive the lost art of conversation. She indicated in the report that she would not be a member of virtual online community because she did not have the time to do such extracurricular activity and also, she prefer to have a face-to-face interactions. Lastly, Jocelyn reported that the significance of the existence of virtual communities was that they created and open up opportunities for interactions between individuals that would not have been otherwise possible.

Reaction to Jocelyn's report

My initial reaction to this report was that is was well written and organized. The report was good in length and very informative. The inclusion of some online resources on virtual communities will be helpful to people who want to participate and get more information about virtual online communities. I was impressed with her report most especially because I learned something new too.

Comparison to other reports

I thought that Jocelyn's report was well written. The format used was somewhat different from the rest of her class mates but nevertheless it was well organized. The structure of her report was easy to read compared to other reports that I looked at.

My selection 3:  How Music Affects Drivers: Tuning in on Driving by Cynthia J'Anthony, G10 409

Why I chose Cynthia's report

I chose Cynthia's report because I have the same interest on how music affects driving. I like to listen to rap very loud on my JL car stereo system while driving. I don't know what effect that has on me and thus, I was curious to know what Cyntia's has to say about it. I found her report very interesting and informative. I also liked her background use of musical notes for her report which caught my attention quickly and I thought it was creative.

Steps to Cynthia's report

The steps that I took to find Cynthia's report was similar to finding Jocelyn's report. Since I was already on the G10 home page I decided to see what reports would be of interest to me. Thus, I came upon Cynthia's report which I found interesting and decided to use for this generational file. I began my search by going through the awards pages and then looking through the 409b class home page again. Then, I just randomly click at any of the names until I found something interesting. I browsed through 3 other student's home page before choosing Cynthia's report.

Summary of Cynthia's report

Cynthia's report discusses the effects of music on driving. She began by reviewing the G7 email postings discussion concerning a few issues regarding listening to music while driving. She mentioned that majority of the discussions centered around the effects that the loudness and tempo of the music have on a driver and the effects of driving without music at all. She found out that each person in the G7 email discussions felt that music did have an effect on their mood while driving and thus, on their driving enjoyment and performance. Most of them agreed that the loudness and fast paced music caused more aggressive driving while slower melodious music caused a more relaxed state and thus, calmer driving. However, the controversy was centered around the recommendations for the driving situation. On one side, they were for turning off the music to promote calm and attentive driving. The other side were supporting the use of music as a a calming technique and as well for reviving energy so that to stay alert. Cynthia was in between the two recommendations. Next, she went on to talk about her search of the online generational curriculum. Cynthia found out that there was a lot of personal bias opinions about how much music, or lack thereof, affects one's driving. Then, she went on to do a web search on music and found a lot of information. Such information that one should listen to music that is personally uplifting, since music has such powerful affect on moods. Finally, Cynthia covered Rothe textbook and the related issues found about driving like intentions. She concluded that music can influence, whether good or bad, the driver's intentions, his/her social interactions while driving, his/her attitude about driving, and his/her mood and level of attentiveness.

Reaction to Cynthia's report

Cynthia's report was very interesting and informative. I was really impressed with her thoughts about other peoples opinions about driving and music. She was critically thinking and analyzing almost every opinion she came across which made the report more realistic. I really liked the use of graphics which I believe added creativity and a sense of ownership for Cynthia. Overall, this report was well written and well organized.

Comparison to other reports

In comparison to other reports in generation 10, I think Cynthia did an excellent job on her report. Her format was different from the formats used by the other students. Her choice of background and icons reflected the topic of her report. Her sense of creativity and style was apparent in the overall appearance of her report which was elegant and appealing to the eyes of the viewer. The content of Cynthia's report was very informative and detailed. She goes in depth about the effects that music may have on driving.

My selection 4:  Portrayals of Driving Behavior on TV by Kristy Kato, G6 459

Why I chose Kristy's report

I chose Kristy's report on Portrayal of Driving behavior on TV, because I found her topic to be interesting and informative. I wanted to see what she had to write about the topic because I have some concerns about it in which I thought she might have addressed. Furthermore, I liked the clarity of her web page and the images that she used. What really attracted me to Kristy's report was that it was not boring to read. In fact, I found myself having fun while reading her report.

Steps to Kristy's report

To get to Kristy's home page I went through the generations page and scrolled down the different generations. I wanted to view something that concerns traffic and driving again so I went to the G6 Psy 459 class home page and clicked on Kristy's name. I was suppose to chose this report for myself but as I was reading through the report I found it to be interesting so I decided to bookmark it and use it instead for this assignment.

Summary of Kristy's report

The report written by Kristy Kato was about examples of bad driving behaviors as portrayed on television shows and the possible effects it will have on the viewers, most especially teenagers. Kristy analyzed cartoons, commercials, music videos, television series and movies for any depiction of bad driving behavior. There were more negative driving behavior portrayed on TV compared to positive driving behavior. Kristy showed great concern about the effects bad driving behavior will have on the younger group of drivers. Adolescence are easily influenced with what the see or hear through the media and they may imitate the negative driving behavior that they view on TV.

Reactions to Kristy's report

I am quite impressed with Kristy's report. She did a splendid job in organizing and writing up her report. The report was well written and very informative. She was descriptive with regards to the negative driving behavior that she was trying to illustrate. I really liked her approach in using regular TV shows to bring about an awareness about the negative driving behaviors that is present within the media.

Comparison to other reports

Kristy's report was similar to most of her classmates' reports. There are some students whose reports was difficult to read because of the designed or background color of their web page. Fortunately, Kristy's report was easy to read and understand. She did use color but it did not affect the legibility of her report. Her report was relatively simple and well organized compared to the reports of her peers.

Reactions to my classmates generational reports

At this point, all of the generational reports are posted. Those that post their reports did a good job. Most of them were simple and yet creative. The length too varied among the peers.

Suggestions for future generations

The most important suggestion that I could give future generations doing this report is to start early. Don't procrastinate because your workload will only pile up. Try your best and don't be afraid to ask for assistance. There are people who are willing to help you.
