THE AGE OF RAGE

By Rie Nakatsubo, G14 Spring 2001

"The best way I can describe it is it is a sudden and violent out of control explosion of temper. It usually happens very suddenly with no real warning that it is coming. Once started it cannot be stopped by willpower alone. Based upon my own experience it just has to run its course. It usually doesn't run very long, a few minutes to as much as 30 or 40 minutes."
An adult describing their "rage attacks." (http://www.tourettesyndrome.net/rage.htm)

As it is described above, rage is fury and violent anger. We rage at so many things everyday but it too often leads violent behavior.
What do we know about rage?
When, how do we rage at what?
How do we deal with it?
This home page introduces the Web sites all about rages.

Animal Rage

We concern Animal abuse because it often leads to more serious crime.  Below are web sites for some of the issues that are related to animal abuse.
Go to "Domestic VIolence and Cruelty to Animals"!
This study is conducted by Frank Ascione, the Department of Psychology at Utah State University in Logan, Utah.  He examines animal maltreatment in a sample of women seeking shelter from domestic violence.  He interviews 38 women seeking in-house service  by using Battered Partners Shelter Survey.  This study shows that 74 % of those women reported current pet ownership.  71 % of the women reported that their male partner had threatened to hurt or kill, or actually did, and 32% of women who have children reported that their children hurt or killed their pets.
Although the diversity of samples of this study is quite limited (within one shelter in Utah), the result shows clear connection between domestic violence and animal abuse.

For more detailed stories of abuse, go to "Animals Escaping Domestic Violence"!.
This page also talks about domestic violence and animal abuse.  Below is one of the stories of domestic violence.
Just six weeks into their marriage, Tamara Barnes's husband began drinking heavily,
shouting at her for no reason and abusing her cats. He broke one cat's leg and burned its
paws. One day he wrapped up one of the cats with duct tape.
"He was taped up like a football," Barnes says. "I was completely freaked out. I told him I
was going to call the police. He said, 'Go ahead and call them. I'll kill this cat if I want to,
and I can kill you, too.' "
The problem when abused women decide to leave home for their safety is that not many shelter accept their pets.  Although those women leave their house without pet, they worry about the pets so much.  The Humane Society appeal to the shelters to deal with this problem with them.

For nation-wide antiviolence campaign, go to First Strike!!
The Humane Society launched the First Strike campaign to increase public and professional awareness of the connection between animal cruelty and human violence and to encourage professionals involved in antiviolenve efforts to work together.  It introduces some of the case studies with the pictures of abusers. For prevention and intervention, the First Strike promotes some local programs and workshops.  We also can see some short videos on campaign and abused animals.

For state law for animal abuse, go to  "Animal Abuse - misdemeanor or felony".

Go to "Animal Cruelty Actionline"!!
ALDF (Animal Legal Defense Fund) is an animal right law organization working to defend animals from abuse.  They suggest the link between acts of animal cruelty and crimes against people.  For example, when 15 year old Kip Kinkel opened fire on his Springfield, Oregon classmates last year, killing one classmate and injuring 23 others, it was not the first time he had killed. Kinkel was known for cutting off the heads of cats and mounting them on sticks.  You can take action for animal abuse by contacting ALDF.  Although those cases are often reported, it haven't taken seriously.  ALDF is working to break this circle.

Police Rage
Go to "Shielded from Justice" for report on police brutality!
Police brutality is a serious human right violation.  This report examines the brutality cases in fourteen large cities in the U.S.  As the contributing factors, political considerations, race, public access to information, filing complaints, and external review are discussed.  The brutality were persistent in all of cities examined, and also they are slow to act; they neglect to take appropriate measures promptly.  Those cities also share a lack of effective public accountability and transparency, a persistent failure to investigate and punish "problem" officers, and a variety of obstacles to achieving justice.  Recommendations are 1. Federal aid should go only to those state and local police departments that can show they are taking concrete steps to curb police abuse.  2. Creating and strengthening civilian review agencies, putting warning systems, creating a special prosecutor's office to pursue cases against officers accused of criminal conduct.  3. International human rights conference should be implemented.  You can take actions by writing to city government, state legislators and/or U.S. Representative or Senators.

Go to "Use of force by police: overview of national and local data" by U.S. Department of Justice.

Surf Rage
Go to 'The Stain on the Soul of Surfing"!
This page is written by Glenn Hening who started the Surfrider Foundation.  Experienced surfer writes about his surf rage experiences and show his concerns.  This page is well worth reading to non-surfers as well as surfers.
Surf Rage including ruthless, violence and arrogance among surfers is a stain on the soul of surfing.  He introduces some surf rage stories, and analyze that ego, low self-esteem, selfishness, or professional greed are the reason for surf rage.  He says that surfing is completely personal sports and it makes aggression and arrogance control us.  He compare the behavior of shark and surfers.  As sharks do, surfer seems to oscillates between wondrous of ocean and brutal turf tactics.  Surfers with bad attitudes are twisted into a joy-less, anxiety-driven fear of outsiders.  Localism has been declining due to the new laws and dilution of localism.  "Be nice, share a wave, give a smile, say Hi"... that's how surfers who really have surfing in their heart and soul behave.

For articles on Surf Rage...
Go to "Surf rage is by no means new wave"
After world champion Nat Young was shattered face pulped and purple, the topic of surf rage arose.  Here is a rule; the person closest to the breaking part of the wave, or the surfer first to his feet, has the right of way.
And "Surf rage his the beach as California loses its cool... could become newest HATE CRIME"
Surf rage became a serious problem.  Law makers are considering adding surf rage to a list of federal hate crimes.
