Summary of Music & Driving from the Online Generational Curriculum

One student I found that talks briefly about Music and its effect on driving was Mr. Sheldon Tawata's report on My Driving Personality Makeover Plan. He said in his findings that the music he tried to avoid are those "with heavy, bashing, drumming with loud and fast guitar playing." He also mentioned that music with a very angry lyrics and a singer that sings aggressively are not the type of music one should listen to while driving. Mr. Tawata added that the types of music he listens to is a part of the ingredients for becoming a better driver. Then, he gives examples of the songs he listens to while he's driving, which he believes makes his driving more under control.

He mentioned also that the songs he listens to have mystical lyrics in them, as well as a mix of a psychedelic rock, which makes his driving safer. Like me, he said that silence or without music in the car allows his mind "to drift too far to the point of irrational thought that affects" his driving. I agree with him on this because I have mentioned before that without music in the car, I usually feel bored and so I become sleepy. It doesn't really matter whether the song I'm listening to is slow or fast, as long as there's music playing. I have included below what he had said about music in general and what it's effect on him while driving:

Another student who briefly discusses the effect of music is Ms. Cherilyn Okazaki's report on Driving Personality Make-over. She kind of implied that when she's in a good mood she usually sings along with the music that she's listening to, mostly slow songs. During the time she started to do the make-over, she noticed that she was also singing along with the fast songs which only proves to her that she's happy with the flow of traffic. She didn't really say anything about the effect of music to her driving, but I assumed that the music relaxes her and changes her mood.

Then, I was a little bit hesitant with the assumption I made earlier about how music changes her mood and helps her relax when she said that "I noticed that although there was some good times while driving that the bad times outweighed the singing..." So, I guess, for her music doesn't determine the mood that she's going to have. The second part of her report, which somehow confuses me now on where she stands about how music affects her driving behavior, she mentioned that she maid a tape of slow songs. She's going to listen to the tape of slow songs she maid on her way to Millilani coming from Aiea. She also added that she was determined to make a change on her driving that's why she was going to use the tape of slow songs. From that observation, I came to believe that music does have an effect on her because even when one driver cut her off, she just kept singing. I guess, my assumption still stands, and that music plays a part in our driving.
