Want to go to the launching pad?/

Continuation of document C, pages 12-20. Daily Round Archives, 1977.

"I am placing my three great priorities, lose weight, make money, and ace school, on a list, and placing specific procedures under each. I am restudying what I must do to achieve success in each of my three great priorities."

This excerpt illustrates my habit of making a list before embarking on any major task. Also, it helps to make a list of things to do and to review it before beginning the day so that procrastination is minimized and a clearer conceptualization of what must be done can be attained.

(v) Emotionalizing Episodes

"Even though my father has lost over $30000 during the past year in stocks and I have lost over $10000, the smallest rise in the price of Inexco Oil common stock (profit of $200) makes me extremely happy. When the news was reported that Inexco was the most active stock, I jumped with joy and kept repeating to myself, EEENEXCO!" This excerpt shows that it's not only the money that counts; it's the joy of being right, of moving in the right direction.

(vi) Rehearsals and Practicings

"As I prepared to take my ANTH 200 test, I was faced with so many things to memorize. I kept on forgetting what I learned and had to relearn and rehearse this knowledge."

This excerpt illustrates the importance of review in study.

(vii) Annotations, Memorizings, Editing

"For chemistry, I had to memorize all the chemical elements in order from one through fifty. I succeeded, but only after hours of coarse memorization."

This excerpt illustrates the wonderful capacities of the human mind.

(viii) Unmentionables Within the Relationship

"While watching TV with my father at home, the subject of sex arose on the screen. Since we can never discuss sex, both myself and my father felt uncomfortable."

Suppression leads to neurosis; it is best to be open about everything.

B. FEELING ARGUMENTS

(i) Figuring out a Conflict

"I'm sitting on my chair near my desk in my room. It's midafternoon. I gotta finish this stupid assignment. How come I don't feel like doing it? Shit."

Note how this excerpt reflects my lazy, procrastinating mood.

(ii) Making Resolutions

"Even though I think there's something wrong with Jakobovits head, and even though I think this course is a farce, I'm going to have to resolve to finish this stupid assignment, because if I don't I may forever regret it."

Note how despite the apathy in the above excerpt, the resolution comes about as a result of the threat of punishment.

C. FANTASY/DAYDREAM EPISODES

(i) Elaborations of Dramatized Scenarios

"It was a close call. I had to make it to SOC 342 so that I could copy someone's notes for the test tomorrow. I just barely made it, and I Xeroxed off her notes. I really made a fool of myself rushing in there 1ike that and asking shamelessly."

(ii) Construction of Catharsis Stories

"Loews options were 1 and a quarter. I should have sold them, because now they're down to 5/8. Why didn't I sell them earlier? Shit. Greed that's what did it. I should have been happy with a clean 1 and a quarter. Now I might not even get 5/8 because I'm waiting for it to go up again.

This teaches me a lesson (catharsis), and that is that greed never pays; be a bear or a bull but don't be a pig."

(iii) Re-contacting Nostalgic Memories

"I remember in sixth grade when I was President. Man, they really thought I was conceited. I was conceited. Very conceited. It's a miracle they elected me."

(iv) Working out Alternative Realities

"I'm sitting at my desk studying my Value Line Convertible Survey. But at the same time, I'm acting out as if I'm on the brokerage house floor, sell this, sell that, buy this and buy that; sell short. It is as if I'm in two separate realities at the same time."

D. THE ELEVATED REGISTER

(i) Praying/Invocations

"I'm in bed, praying for the world. God, why is there so much misery in this world? Why are so many people insane? What's wrong with Jakobovit's head? I'm just kidding. I hope that everything works out for everyone, and that everyone ends up in heaven. God, it isn't fair that some people are rich and others poor, some healthy and others not. Why is there so much inequality? God, I thank you for making me wealthy enough so that I won't have to work if I don't want to. I'll pay you and the world back with my intelligence and sensitivity in some way I haven't figured out yet."

(ii) Altered States of Consciousness

"Sometimes, I don't care if the girl I marry is not a virgin. Other times, I feel as if it's the only thing in the whole world that matters. I guess I'm a manic depressive. It's as if I have two different states of consciousness; one is horny, the other is very sincere and puritan."

(iii) Meditations/Readings of Scriptures

"I just read that the Holy Bible says that "Thou shall not fornicate." Then why is everyone at the U.H. screwing? It bothers me. The intensity of love is reduced after marriage."

(iv) Poetic Expressions

"Neither a lender nor a borrower be. So said Laertes in Hamlet. Good advice, but not really. It's O.K. to borrow!!!"

E. ROUTINE CONCERNS: SELECTED INVENTORIES

(i) Privacy

A.) from the Eyes of particular Others

"I bent down a little too far and ripped apart the pants for my physical education class. I had to stick it out for fifteen more minutes without being noticed. I made it."

B.) From the Nose of particular Others

"I didn't wash my clothes for a long time and I could even smell the sweat myself. I passed by my girl friend. I didn't want to talk to her too long just enough to let her know I still think about her. I hope she didn't get repulsed by my smell."

C. From the Ears of particular Others

"I am playing my musical instrument with a bad mouthpiece today. I hope my music teacher doesn't notice. I'm sounding very buzzy. After playing my recital piece, he didn't notice."

D.) from the Knowledge of particular Others

(a) involving your ACTIVITIES (Places, People, Purchases, Bills, etc.)

"I missed that last test and had to talk to my teacher about a make-up. He knows I haven't been attending; I hope he doesn't refuse. After going up, he didn't even seem to care. He told me to see the T.A."

(b) involving your IDEAS (Memories, Attitudes, Opinions)

"I've been missing a lot of classes; I have a feeling my teacher knows my attitude about this lousy course. But I have to go up to him to ask for a make-up test on the Midterm. After going up, he didn't care and sent me to the T.A."

(ii) Information: Record Keeping

(a) schedules

"I keep a record of all my classes, when they meet, where, and who my teachers are."

(b) shopping lists

"Sometimes, when I go shopping, I write what I want to buy on a scrap piece of paper."

(c) dates and address book

"In high school, I kept a telephone book with all the names and phone numbers of all my classmates and even of people I didn't even know (so that I could cheat by asking for old papers, tests, and other helpful things). I got caught once so now I don't continue this practice."

(d) Biographical (diary, resolutions, notes, etc.)

"I don't keep a diary because it implies introversion. I always make resolutions every week; I never keep them."

A#5: MY COMMUNITY OF RELATIONSHIPS

A. NOTICING OBSERVATIONS

(i) Visual Sightings a Physical State/Appearance of Things in Places

"As I drove across the Pali Highway, I saw some fallen rocks on the road."

b. Change in Normalcy Signs

c. Weather, etc.

"As a got up on Sunday, I was freshly relieved by the cool, penetrating rainy weather outside."

d. People in public places

"When we played with the Youth Symphony for the Mayor's Concert, we saw Frank F. himself! One of us shouted "best!" Another, in sarcasm, shouted "worst!" Ironically, less than a week later, Fasi was charged with bribery."

(ii) Relationship Events

a. Noticeables About People You Know

(1) Unmentionables within the relationship

"The girl who worked at the traffic desk had a scar on the pupil of her eye; she must have been blind in that eye."

(2) Disoccasioned Mentionables

"The instructor's collar was not straightened out; someone should have told him to fix his collar."

b. Territoriality

"The same guys always take that bench; their click never gives that part of the building up. I wish they'd be more generous about that part of the campus; that's where the best seats are."

(iii) Auditory Pickings-up

a. Overheard Snatches of Talk

"When riding in the bus, I heard a girl whispering to her girl friend about

me. I overheard her statement that I would probably be better off with an ugly girl; I had stated previously that I like pretty girls, but the statement by this girl- that I would have trouble holding on to a pretty girl and that an ugly girl could provide love, sex, respect, and companionship better than a pretty one - shook me up."

b. Sounds Noises, etc.

"I overheard noises coming from my neighbor's house. It turned out that it was a cat."

B. DESCRIPTION OF TRANSACTIONS

(i) Gossiping

"I overheard my friends gossiping about who made it into which college. So and so made Harvard, so and so made Stanford, and so on."

(ii) Catching up on News

"I overheard our neighbors radio report that the Dow Jones average was up 4.5 today."

(iii) Having an Argument

"I had an argument with my father about whether or not to write 2 calls of INX May 20 call options with 9 days left before expiration - See My Talk"

(iv) Joking

"I overheard two students of PSY 322 joking about this course. Said one of them, "I think Jakobovits is trying to earn money with the least effort." Said the other, "Yeah, I've never been in such a useless course in my life."

(V)Exchanging Information

"I didn't know when the PSY 230 final was, so I called up a friend and asked him for the date, time, and contents of the test.

(vi) Making Arrangements

"I missed by dental appointment so I called up to make another appointment."

(vii) Working out a Problem

"My mother had to go to the flower shop; I had to go to school; we both couldn't use the car at the same time; so we decided that she drive me to school, go to the flower shop, go home, and pick me up at the end of the day."

(viii) Sharing Secrets/Confessions

"When I talked to my friend about the high rate of premarital sex on this campus, he replied that if you go around asking, you'll get the idea that 90% of the students are not virgins, but when you actually go to bed with girls, you find that almost half are still virgins."

(ix) Routine Reviews/News of the Day

"On the final day of school, before the final exam, we had a review of everything we learned in this course in Anthropology."

C. REPORTING JOINT ACTIVITIES

(i) Doing Something With (dates, appointments, etc.)

"I had a conference with my friend, who had some money and wanted me to give him some financial advice. We carefully studied various strategies, risk/reward ratios, and talked about his goals and which investment regimen would best meet his needs."

(ii) Telephone Calls

"I received a call from my stock broker telling me to put up $9650 by 3 p.m. or forfeit the profit I made on the sale of my Loews April 35 call options."

(iii) Writing/Receiving Notes, Letters, Memos, Aids, etc.

"I received a letter from the Value Line Convertible Survey telling me that they could not give me a pro rata refund on my subscription."

(iv) Paying Bills

D. NON-JOINT ACTIVITIES

(i) Doing a Task for Another Person

"My friend needed some information on the rules (margin) for writing options.I went to my stock broker, got the information. and sent it to him

(ii)Buying a Gift for Another Person

"Instinctively, I hate buying, receiving, or even thinking about gifts. It gives me tremendous anxiety. I gave my friend a gift recently on his birthday. It was a Sony cassette tape recorder."

(iii) Mentioning a Person to Someone

"My friend wanted to know who the best broker was. I told him I know about 5 brokers - but that they are all liars (all brokers put their personal and firm's interests above their client's interests). But I told him that xxx was the best broker, and that he works for Merrill Lynch."

(iv) Avoiding a Person

"After losing $30000 of my money in the stock market, and after forcing my father to promise to pay that money back (since he lost it), and after he reneged on his promise, I have been avoiding my father for several months now."

(v) Going to See/Looking for a Person

"I somehow have to find Blaylock my Psy 321 instructor. He didn't tell us when the final was until the last class (which I missed). I still haven't found him in his office.

(vi) Having a Mental Exchange with Someone

"I had a mental exchange with someone last Tuesday. He told me he was a strong believer in Christianity. But I told him that under Christianity, animals perish, 1/3 of the world's population (in China - Buddhists) perish, l/5 of the world's population (in India - Hindus) perish, and so on, pointing out contradictions and inconsistencies. He told me that for those who do not know the Lord, they will be judged by the warmth of their hearts."
