Advice and Introspections

The following consists of my advice for future 499ers and my feelings in relation to my own experience doing 499 work.

Thanks to Dr. James./Advice for the new 499ers./My big teacing experience at K.H.S./A few groovy pictures of your editor./Launching Pad, Where do you want to go?

Thanks to Dr. James for all his support

I just wanted to take a moment to let Dr. James know how appreciated he is. For being so helpful to me. He took time out to actually come to the lab with me to help me get started. It was somewhat of a trial for me, to use an apple for this, instead of an I.B.M. Dr. James was fluent in both areas. He gave me some good tips on how to do my work Those tips were real time savers. He also was generous enough to loan me an rtf to html program, which also helped the editing along greatly. When I was at my wits end, which was often, he gave me kind supportive words. He also takes the time to compliment the work itself. Although it may just be a sentence or two, it goes a long way. It lets me feel appreciated too. A simple but profound thing that not all professors do. To me that is one of the most important things and has a high impact on me. So thank you Dr. James for introducing me to the ways of cyberspace. It is surely invaluable to me and I can't imagine life without it. Aloha and Mahalo.

Advice to future 499ers, from someone who has been there numerous times.

A prose from my past life comes to mind and seems appropriate. I am unsure who the author as far as credit due. Here it is .

Accept the things you can not change.

Have the courage to change the things you can.

And have the wisdom to know the difference.

I found some solace in this statement and maybe you will too. What this means to me is that there are a lot of things in life, that one has no control over. There are so many petty hurdles to clear. You can't control lab hours, computer viruses, classes kicking you out of the lab, lack of computers, etc. You just have to problem solve all of the time. A lesson that was well taught to me, at U.H.M. You will be tested what seems like too much. More than you or anyone else can possibly handle. I like to think that God doesn't give you more than you can deal with. If anything these little trials that add up to one grand mountain, only strengthen you . It is like building muscles. If you don't flex and work on things handed down to you, there is no growth. From all of this you gain experience, through that you are made strong. How do we get experience? It comes from trying and failing, then rerouting our selves to the correct path. I think that is the absolute truth but I would keep that to yourself, when interviewing for a job. So you just have to keep your teeth clamped on like a snapping turtle. Don't let go and don't give up. My best recommendation to you, that is beyond parables and feelings is buy yourself a computer. I mean it. If I could do it all over again knowing what I know, I would do it. Use one of those credit cards we all get in the mail. Take out another loan. At least you will know what to expect with the creditors. This would surely cut your headaches down by 3/4. At least you would have the privilege of working your own hours. Also keep yourself in good health. If you fall physically or emotionally you could lose a lot of valuable time. Another really important thing is to keep Dr. James informed. He wants to help you to get the work done. Your work reflects on him. If he doesn't know how to help you, how can he? It is hard to ask for help sometimes. Especially if you think that you know everything. He has been doing this longer than you in all probability. He might surprise you as he holds a wealth of information. Communicate, it is definitely to your advantage. A little luck and a few prayers couldn't hurt either.

My personal experience at K.H.S.

I was offered the assignment to help out Ms. Lee in the area of H.T.M.L., and the concept of Daily Round Archives. Ms. Lee is a high school teacher at K.H.S. Dr. James wanted me to help her implement the Daily Round Archive program with her twelfth graders. So for a period of about two months I became a salesperson and a teacher.

As a salesperson I assumed my task would be simple. I have extensive background in the sales field. I have always been good at it. Earning awards at my place of work constantly for top sales stats. I thought I would have an easy time relaying the concept, especially since I believed in it my self. I told her that it would be a special thing for her students to look back on. It would serve two main purposes. The first being the working knowledge of computers and programming. Secondly, the record itself as a time capsuel. I was unsuccessful though. She was only interested in learning programming. I think maybe the two issues, packaged together, muddied her thoughts. Learning H.T.M.L. can be overwhelming itself. Perhaps she wished to just do one thing at a time. I was sort of disappointed. I could not understand why she did not grasp the beauty of D.R.A. I even took her through some of the work of Dr. James' classes. We also visited the D.R.A. website. I guess the old statement rings true, "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink."

As an instructor I thought answering her questions would be a piece of cake. Again I was wrong. The major problem here had to do with equipment and support. I had done all of my previous work on P.C.'s and was thus experienced with P.C's, specifically, I.B.M's. So I was a bit taken back, when I saw all of her equipment was Apple. I felt like I could get around this. It did slow me down with a lot of trial and error, as I tried to familiarize myself with the Apple, programs. Another huge problem is she only had just enough ram, to get on-line. It kept her system, excruciatingly slow. Talk about frustration. It got even worse when I realized that to have more than one window open at a time led to involuntary shut down of the whole system. I sort of felt powerless and incompetent, since I couldn't answer all of her questions. I was helpful to her in some areas. I explained how to better utilize search engines, web surfing and some programming tricks. I brought her printouts of answers to her questions in the area of H.T.M.L. It was definitely an experience that broadened my horizons.

I benefited from this experience a great deal. I got the impression that I should not limit my knowledge. In life as well as programs. So I choose to do all of my work for this semester in the Mac lab. True it was convenient because the scanner is located their. In addition to that, I also wanted to be fluent in both top languages, like Dr. James. That upgrades me undoubtedly as an employee. Some people said that Apple had seen it's finer days and the fruit was rotting. Yet ,I was validated recently when Bill gates bought out 90% of the Apple stock. I am certain that he won't let the company that he helped to create die. So all in all I feel like the time was not wasted. I walked away from this with experience and another little bead of wisdom.

I gave it my best shot and I think it was beneficial, all around. It was nice to know that Dr. James was confident enough in me, to recommend me for the job. All he really wanted me to do was sell the D.R.A. concept. Although it didn't come to fruition this time, I doubt you can keep a good idea like that down for long. In the future and on the flip side, Dr. James will probably have to struggle with people, who are blatantly attempting to copy, his idea. As he has to do, with the issue of Road Rage. I am sure lots of people would like to take credit for the idea of D.R.A. I am here to tell you, we can thank Dr. James for that. The infinite preservation of thoughts, emotions, and eras gone by. D.R.A. On a final note I also enjoyed the company of Ms. Lee. She seemed like a really nice person. So as you can see, I benefited in many ways, from my time spent.
