B. DESCRIPTION OF TRANSACTIONS
(i) Gossiping "I'm with my friend Thomas in the car driving to Sunset Beach, We are in the car gossiping about some people that we know, Heh! Did you know that Robert is getting married? He's getting married to a chick from Japan, There going to live over at his house, They are getting married next month on the 29th, I wonder when we will be in that situation?"
(ii) Catching up on News
"I'm in Holiday Mart in Pearl City and I see my friend Evan, who I didn't see for about 5 months, I stop to talk to him and we talked about things that have been happening, He tells me about other people that I know and what happened to them,"
(iii) Having an Argument
"I'm at my girlfriend's house, She thinks that I'm mad at her for some reason or another, I'm not and she keeps on telling me that I'm mad at her, She keeps on insisting that I am mad at her and I begin to get aggravated, I tell her for once that I'm not and start to change the subject,"

"I'm at my girlfriend's house, She had just woken up when I came, She tells me that she looks tired and I tell her that she looks the same to me, "Ugly", Her eyes open and it looks like she is in shock, She starts to make a mad face at me and I quickly tell her, "Nah, Nah! Only joking!' Don't get mad."

"I'm at home doing one of the Physics problems. I soon get stuck and need some help in solving the problem, I call up a girl, named Grace, to see if she knows how to work it out, She answers the phone and I ask her how to figure out the problem and she gives me the information, She is stuck on one of the problems that I already solved so I give her the information."

"A group of us guys are planning to go to the beach , I ask Thomas what time He is going to leave, He tells me that he is going to leave about 9:00 A.M. I ask him if it's alright if I catch a ride to the beach and he says it's okay."

"I'm at my friend Joe's house, a hose in his car engine broke and he has to go out in 10 minutes. I came over to see what I could do, I figured out an answer to the problem. I had an extra piece of small hose. I decided to cut the hose in two and put the small hose in between and clamp them together."

"I'm talking to my friend Marvin and he is kind of drunk from drinking to much, He tells me to come and that he wants to tell me something As I approach him and he asked me if I wanted to know something, He tells me that he has a stash with him and he asks me if I smoke too, I hesitate and than tell him yes. He takes it out and from the smell of it I can tell it's Elephant. We smoke a couple of joints and from then on I feel floating."

C. REPORTING JOINT ACTIVITIES

"I'm driving over to my girlfriend's house, We are going to see the movie Slap Shot at Waikiki 2, We heard from friend that it was supposed to be a very funny movie. The movie was what people said it would be. Throughout the whole movie we both laughed so much that I had a sore stomach and she had a sore jaw."
(ii) TelePhone Calls
"It's about 5:OO P,M. and the telephone rings, My younger brother Paul yells and says It's for me, I pick up the phone and it's my friend Randy. Eh, you like play basketball, Nah! I got to finish this Psy. paper for tomorrow. Oh well, just thought I would ask, don't stay up and study too hard. Yeah, don't worry I won't and thanks for calling me up anyway."
(iii) Writing/Receiving Notes, Letters, Memos, Ads, etc.
"I'm at home watching T.V. and I hear the mailman's truck pull over by our mailbox. I go outside to see what we got. To my surprise when I opened the mailbox I saw a letter adressed to me. I quickly went into the house to open it, to see who it came from. It was from one of my friends who went away to a mainland college. He talked about how it was up there. I felt so good to recieve a letter from him. It is very good to keep in touch with friends who are far away."
(iv) Paying Bills
"I'm at home and I have to pay back my mother for some money I borrowed from her, I see my paycheck from yesterday go down and my mother's purse grow from the 80 dollars I owe her, I feel sad to see so much money go at one time and I see my mother smiling to have the money back."
D. NON-JOINT ACTIVITIES
(i) Doing a Task for Another Person
"I just woke up 2 minutes ago and my mother starts to call for me. She needs some things from the store. She tells me to go down because she doesn't want to put any makeup on. I still feel drowsy from the night before, I become kind of mad but cannot say anything, So I go to the store for her."
(ii) Buying a Gift for Another Person
"I'm at Ala Moana Shopping Center, I have to look for a gift for my friends girlfriend. I really don't know what she whats or needs. As I walk around I don't really know what I'm looking for. I ask the salesclerk what is nice, She tells me that girls like stuffed animals.
I ask her which one she likes the best. She shows me a stuffed bear and I tell her okay and I take the stuffed bear. When I have to shop for other people I always have a hard time choosing what to get."
(iii) Mentioning a Person to Someone
I'm in Physics class and my friend Randy is sitting next to me. I show him one of the girls that I met in another class. Eh, Randy You see the girl over there, Her name is Carol kind of cute, don't you think? You like me introduce you to her. She's very funny. Okay, after class I'll introduce you to her."
(iv) Avoiding a Person "I'm here at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. There's a girl around here in the school that I took out once before, that I dont what to see. The time I took her out it was so junk and dry. As I walk past Crawford Hall I see her coming from the other end of the hall. I hope she didn't see me, There's no way to escape I have to walk past her. I put down my head and look to the side bulletin board. I passed her I hope she didn't recognize me."
(v) Going to See/Looking for a Person
"It's mid afternoon and I have to drop something off at my friend Thomas's house. I drive over and knock on his door, His sister answers the door and says he's not home. I get a little mad because he said he was going to stay home. I leave his house in search of him, I went to all my friends houses and he wasn't there. Then it came to me that he must have gone to his girlfriend's house, I drove over there and sure enough he was there. I wasted all that time looking for him at other places when I should have looked at his girlfriend's house first."
(vi) Having a Mental Exchange with Someone
"I'm in my room taking a rest from school, My mother comes inisde and asks me if I have any homework. She always asks me that and I get tired of hearing that. I tell her to get out of my room, She then gets mad at me and she leaves the room. Inside both of us are mad at each other."
