Patience...

I can more-or-less cope with people tailgating me because I have at least some control over the gap.

What really winds me up is tailgating of the cars in front, which means I either have to find a gap to overtake the entire road-train in one go, or risk having to wedge a gap open between two cars.

Just wanted to get that off my chest, as it happened on the way to work this morning. [ M.]

My reaction:

I truly feel that if this person exercised a little more patience and understanding, then the whole aggravated event could have been avoided. The way to make it a little easier on the nerves is to leave earlier and plan ahead, and if unfortunate situations do arise, accept the fact that maybe it could not have been helped and no one is out to ruin their lives. Taking deep breaths and maybe counting to ten could also help to alleviate one's anger.

Female Drivers...

I do not know about Jan, but for a long time it was assumed that women were essentially less aggressive as drivers, until driving to and from work became a factor. It was then realized as the more female drivers there were, the closer women's 'standard' of driving would approach that of men.

My Reaction:

I assume that there is a difference between the mentality of women drivers and men drivers, or at least that is what this person is trying to say. The truth is that there are no difference between genders, but there is a difference between the type of drivers they are. Looking strictly at personality types, one could say that the female drivers are less aggressive as an extension of their natural, non-agressive nature, and that men are more aggressive because of their innate aggressive nature. Look at the facts, though. We are not born knowing how to drive...we have to learn how to drive. The learning environment that we experience influences what type of driver we ultimately become. If we learn the wrong way and no other way then that is what we will practice...regardless of gender.

Eat and Drive...

Wow! People will try to eat anything while they drive. This lady was driving along today at lunch. It was funny to watch the evasive end of the pizza get away as she tried to bite in. What was not funny was to watch her drive all over the road as she found it hard to steer and keep the sausage from rolling off of her pizza. What would have been funny was to see how many of the toppings were in her lap. Is someone who chases the end of a sloppy pizza all over the place considered an "aggressive" driver? Anyone care to get rich? Just invent a pizza holder for drivers so they can eat pizza and drive at the same time. I wonder what will happen to that pizza if the air bag pops open? Instead of knocking her head off, I can just see that pizza jammed all the way up her nose.

My Reaction:

Interesting idea, about the pizza holder. Many people have tried to become more timesaving entities. Sometimes this entails eating while driving, and sometimes this entails putting makeup on in the car on the way to work. This may not be construed as aggressive driving, however it is very negligent. There are so many things to be aware of on the road, and the simple fact that ultimately you can only control yourself out there is argument enough to try and be as alert as possible. If that person trying to eat that last pepperoni without getting any of it on their clothes or car injured someone, or worst-case-scenario killed someone, then I am sure they would deeply regret not paying attention. We should be more interested in prevention than treating the symptoms. What I mean is that we should be more interested in preventing accidents than waiting for them to happen and then take action.

Honk at This...

As far as honkers go, let 'em honk. Just because they are in a hurry because they are missing the Mama's Family marathon on TBS. doesn't mean that should negatively affect your outlook and cause you undue anxiety. hehehe whenever I hear the impatient honker I will remember this one, especially this summer when (no offense) all the folks come to Maine from Boston and wonder why we stop at red lights....[ Jess]

My Reaction:

It is interesting that this person has chosen to use the words anxiety. I have begun to understand the term anxiety to mean a response to a unique experience or one related to stress. I did learn that in anxiety, one chooses to "fight or flee". By hearing the honking horn, the person might become anxious and step on the gas...a fleeing action, or they might become aggressive themselves and act on that in some manner. I admire the author's use of comedy to deal with a situation like this. I hope that some people read this and learn to deal with their anxiety in a positive if not comical way.
