Left Foot Braking

Date: 1999/03/04

It seems like I'm the only conservative driver on these boards. Most of the guys on here are aggressive drivers and I noticed a couple of post between guys argueing about whether or not to left foot brake in an automatic. I want to hear from you guys who do left foot brake in autamatics. why do you do it and what kind of cars do you drive? Have you always done it or is it something that makes you feel cool? Judging from the other posts it seems like left foot braking in automatics goes with aggressive driving ö [ http://www.talkway.com ]

That's aload of shit. Left foot braking makes for smoother driving and quicker reaction in an emergency situation. I drive a Granada 2.8 Ghia auto, and a Mini woody estate, both Autos and I have been left foot braking for over 20 years, and I am not an aggressive driver, nor is my wife in her automatic Mini!  [Keith.]

What I think

It seems to me that both respondants are blinded by their own thoughts and feelings of what an aggressive driver is. We all want to think that we are the safest drivers on the road and not aggressive ones. It is not who we are but what we think of ourselves. Both authors are speaking through their own point of view without considering the thoughts of other possibilities. Keith reacted like any other person who reacts when someone tells them that their driving habits are somewhat wrong and considered to be an aggressive driver. Keith wanted to prove renfrqu wrong by proving his point and adding a little support by mentioning that his wife in also not an aggressive driver.

Rampant Road Rage is a Crock

Date: 1999/03/06

The trick is in seeing the commonality between the cruel hasty laws of a dictatorship against its own people , and the cruel hasty laws of a democracy against its own people.

This was pointed out to me by my instructor in my Constitutional Law class. So many of our laws are passed in haste after some particular event which arouses emotion in the general public, but which puts unnecessary restrictions on people. I can only say that I believe that all laws should have a sunset clause so that they are reviewed as to relevance regularly after the emotional event that caused it is in the past. ö [ Connie ]

What I think

I agree with John that many laws are passed due to an unfortunate accident that happened in the past. I also think that laws should have taken effect before any accidents can occur. We put our trust into the hands of the law and we all should feel secured. Having a law pass after an incident should not be the way a law should be passed rather, they should look at things that could cause a bad incident which could involve lives being in danger and work from there. Although it may be difficult to determine what may be dangerous, it always good to know that they have tried.

In defence of road rage

Date: 1999/02/06

Road rage doesn't occur for no reason. It happens in response to someone doing something silly or even dangerous. For example, rude or incompetent driver dangerously cuts off another driver. The victim is angry and abuses the perpetrator. Result: the victim is accused of road rage. People who commit road rage are providing a valuable service to all of us in letting errant and dangerous drivers know that their conduct is unacceptable. We should be rewarding people accused of road rage for this valuable service. Their accusers should forthwith be sent to driver re-education camps or if the incident was bad enough, charged with dangerous driving.

This whole hysteria against road rage is a classic case of punishing the victim.

What I think

What Lance seems to be saying is that road rage is a behavior everyone should do because it lets other drivers know that the victim is a bad driver. But, can we honestly say that the victim is the aggressive driver here. The person who commits the crime is the guilty person not the vicitm. Through my eyes, Lance is saying that a murderer is innocent because the person he/she killed was a burglar to prove to others that he was wrong to steal. No matter what a person does on the road it is not your place to prove them wrong or prove to others that they were wrong.

Seat Belt Reminder and Inertia Lock

Date: 1999/02/24

This should not be a problem with being trapped, since you need to hit the latch release to get out, not pull on the webbing. OTOH, with the seat belt locked it can be difficult to impossible to turn around and look for merging, etc. My RAM50 belts have a bad habit of locking on freeway on/off ramps right when I need to turn my person to check to merge.

I recently purchased a 1999 24V QC, 5-spd, 3.54, 2500, 4x4.

On three separate occasions, while wearing my seat belt, the seat belt reminder lamp on the dash board has illuminated after driving for an extended period of time (15-20 minutes). Whatâs worse, while in this condition, not only is the seat belt reminder on the dash illuminated; the seat belt retractor mechanism is locked as well!!! I cannot pull any seat belt webbing out form the seat! It is locked in place just as if the inertia lock had engaged.

Has anyone else experiencd a similar problem with there RAM?

I would like my safety restraint system fixed to eliminate these false seat belt reminders. This is a serious safety issue. I need to have the inertia lock fixed to prevent me being trapped inside the vehicle.

HELP!!!

What I think

I see where Double Clutch is coming from, he/she is in a dilema and needs to take action right away. Seat belts are used for safety of being seriously injured but, are we actually safe from them? What Double Clutch was trying to do when posting her message was to seek for help from others who also own Rams. He/ she is not sure if he/she should take action and wanted to make sure if he/she should take action. My advice to Double Clutch is to take action no matter what anybody says or else it could lead to further or serious problems.

Punk Teenage Drivers!

Date: 1999/02/14

well put, we can all learn a lesson from that, remember, it's only the BAD 5% that you hear about, just look at the news.

Okay, guys, it looks like this has gotten a wee bit out of hand. First of all, Stephen, i like your post. and you are absolutely right. The majority of teen drivers are inexperienced, know it, and try to do their best to be responsible. But, then again, it's the small minority of teen drivers who make up for all the responsible rest in making "elders" angry at your age group. But, once again, you are right. No one should "lump" anyone in an all-consuming generalization. So, for teen drivers who are responsible: Thank you much.

Now, for teen drivers who frequently go well beyond their ability: Go for it, but if you crash and burn be damned certain that you don't hurt anybody else or do significant damage to property.

Now for left-lane-bandits, slow folks (regardless of age) and those who swear at them, get over it. We live in an ever expanding world, one in which personal freedoms are becoming more and more restricted. Take a deep breath, realize the consequences of your actions, whether you're holding up others or trying to push others out of your way. Treat obstacles are just that, obstacles. get around them safely and quickly. it is your duty to do so, your responsibility. don't tailgate, don't crowd anyone.

EVERYBODY, drive responsibly! This doesn't mean slow. If you drive fast, remember you are taking on substantial additional responsibility for the comfort and safety of others. We must make allowances for ALL types of drivers on the road. no matter how much one raves, rants, flames, cries or moans, no one group is going to go away.

That said, EVERYBODY SPEED!  [ Mars ]

A wise man once said, "A kick in the ass is a step forward."

What I think

Mars is a person who gives advice for both the safety person and the daring person. I think what Mars is trying to establish here is a sense of reality. Mars knows that not everyone drives with caution and therefore responds to it. Mars also knows the consequences of aggressive driving and advises everyone the results of wreckless driving. Mars comes from the real road rather than the imaginary road where everyone tries to drive with caution.

I dislike Mars' approach when she gives advice and encourages teens how to drive. I assume by the tone of voice that she is a young driver herself. Although she is speaking from a young mind, she is also speaking from an 'inconsiderate mind.' By encouraging others to speed and take chances is not a way to win everyone's affection towards what she wants to accomplish.

stop signs or lights

Date: 1999/02/20

Tailgating would indeed seem more dangerous than speeding. But even if tailgating is more likely to cause an accident than speeding, tickets are given for speeding because speeding is a more common violation. That is, perhaps there are more speeders than tailgaters. The frequency of a behavior and its dangerousness are not necessarily related. I would hazard that the ease of proving the cop's case in court is not the critical issue. Just the fact the cop wrote the citation for tailgating compels the driver to plead guilty by mail and pay up, or take the time to go to court to fight the ticket (which is a form punishment because of the inconvenience). The cop, therefore, has punished the driver even if the magistrate ends up dismissing the charges for lack of solid evidence. ---[ Cary Lichtman ]

I have asked cops this question:

What is more dangerous - speeding or tailgating? They always answer tailgating, but issue more speeding tickets. They claim that the judges need to go through a driving course where tailgating is demonstrated to SEE how dangerous it is. I believe more accidents are caused by tailgating than speeding. If tailgating was better enforced, I believe the accident rate would drop accordingly.  [ Dave LaCourse ]

What I think

What I think Dave is trying to accomplish here is to inform people especially drivers to realize that tailgating is more dangerous than speeding. Dave is trying to prove his point by mentioning his many conversations with police officers. Dave also mentions that people may believe that speeding is more dangerous than tailgating. Dave states the proof by mentioning that police officers give out speeding tickets more than tailgating tickets. I also believe the reason why officers don not issue many tailgating tickets is because they could not determine if the driver was tailgating or not.

Music that gripes my ass! >:-[

Date: 1999/03/05

It's actually a song by The Business, a UK oi band. The song goes: "Knock it back, have another one, drinking and driving is so much fun" In their "Loud, Proud And Oi!" CD they say: "Described as Chas N Dave meets Status Quo, this little tounge in cheek ditty was written at the time of the UK governments clampdown on drunk drivers. '40% of all road deaths are caused by drunk drivers' they said - does that mean that the other 60% were caused by people who hadn't had a beer?"

Regards to all,

[ Nosebleed ]

"I'd rather stay a child and keep my self-respect if being an adult means being like you" Dead Kennedy's - 'Life Sentence'

"Looks like you need to take a shit because it's coming out of your mouth instead of your asshole." Christopher George - 'The Exterminator'

Well if its a song about drinking, I forgot the name of the ska band but they had lyrics that said "so sit back and have another one, drinking and driving is so much fun".

What I think

I think music has a lot to do with how we behave in all sorts of situations. Lyrics such as the ones mentioned by Nosebleed might have a great impact on those listening to the song. It is also the listeners choice to either react with the lyrics or against the lyrics. What I think Nosebleed is trying to establish here is yah, lyrics to a song may impact to how drivers behave on the road but can we honestly say that lyrics to a song is responsible for our actions? We all have no reasons how and why we get into accidents on the road so we can not really blame it on the lyrics to a song.

Those new 50kph speed limits

Date: 1999/03/05

I was thinking that perhaps they are lowering the limit because they know people will get pissed off with it and drive 60 or 70 which they usually do, so the govt will just get more revenue from speeding fines...

Im not sure if other states have adopted this method too, but the current reduction in speed limits in Queensland has affected the suburb "back streets". Main roads of use have not been affected and in some places have been increased to 70. The only thing this reduction in speed limits is trying to achieve is to keep people out of the back streets as much as possible, making them a safer and more pleasant place to live for the residents.

Cameron! -=DUH#17=- (Y2)

Abort, Reply, Flame?

What I think

What I think Ben is trying to say here is that we all know that drivers go beyond the speed limit and the government is trying to benefit from it by issuing more speeding tickets and keeping some places safer than others. If the government wants to keep certain places safer than others why raise the speed limit while other drivers may not obey the law and therefore would result in an unsafe back street. Ben is trying to find a sense of reasoning of why the government wants to use reverse psychology to make streets safer. Ben does not seem to understand why and how the decrease in speed limits would result in better and safer streets.

VW Jetta Song?

Date: 1999/03/01

yea its called Jung at Heart by Master Cylinder

Does anyone know the song in the Voltwagen Jetta commercial where a couple is casually driving around in it on the streets and things are in slow motion. It has a slow beat?

What I think

I think what Mr. Eddy was trying to find the tune to the Jetta song because of the way the commercial used it as a symbol of driving in style. After viewing that commercial, I also wanted to purchase that car because of the way VW approached their viewers with a catchy song and a catchy situation. We can be very persuaded by a simple song or commercial in what we want.

The song also made an impact in drivers and how they behave on the road. After seeing a commercial in which the driver is driving very slowly down a busy street and seeing how everything is so rhythm like, drivers also see how cool that looks which in turn may impact viewers to drive a little bit slower than usual. Now that's a commercial drivers should witness.

New Drunk Driving Law?

Date: 1999/02/23

Alot of accidents are also caused by people sleeping at the wheel. Maybe if you are suspected of sleeping you should lose your car. Hell you can always buy a new one

What I think

Although this is a simple statement, it has a lot of meaning to it. What Stanford is trying to say here is that it is okay for people to drive drunk because it is always so easy to buy a new one. Stanford is also saying that people who sleep on the wheel should also be charged as being drunk because of the state they are in. Being intoxicated and exhausted is two different situations but in a weird way they both represent the driver as being incapable of driving.
