October 30, 1981 COLLOQUIUM MEMORANDUM

RE: Graphic Concepts as a Listening and Thinking Tool -- a demonstration

The three Graphic Concepts I drew during your colloquium presentation are attached. Let me explain how to read these diagram-graphs. Everything you said during your presentation gets to be divided into three categories or "concept universes" which are related to each other by correspondence as follows:

the INNERMOST CIRCLE always represents MOTIVATIONAL issues ("WILL component")

the INTERMEDIATE CIRCLE always represents PLANNING issues ("PREPARATION component.")

the OUTERMOST CIRCLE always represents MAPPING issues ("PERFORMANCE component.")

The reason these three are in this correspondence has been very well established by the eminent Swedish scientist/theologian Emanuel Swedenborg (died 1772) and I would be happy to discuss it with you. In the meantime the system can be used even without knowing its proof as follows.

Start by inspecting all the entries. Note that they are all words or phrases that you used in your presentation. So what I had to do as I was listening to you was to pick off appropriate words and phrases in your discourse and to place them into the empty boxes of the Graphic Concepts format. Of course, I had to know where to put your words and concepts but this is a mechanical matter anyone can learn with a little practice. That is why I call it a listening tool in that it yields, at the end of the presentation, a meta-theoretical analysis of the content of the presentation. This is helpful for intelligent retention rather than mere memory-retention, which fades away unused. As well, the speaker himself may receive feedback on what got transmitted, that is, whether there was conceptual harmony and understanding.

To help you read the Graphic Concept system, I'll give a brief running description of each entry. You can let me know whether I have captured your conceptual structure accurately, whether my propositions based on your discourse are acceptable to you, and whether this way of slicing up all your ideas into three corresponding but independent universes is useful to you in further theory-building and research and development planning. Please do let me know.
Mahalo and Aloha.

Introduction
On top of the forms you see the title of "Dictionary of Graphic Concepts: Ennead Structures." This means that I am collecting entries on these forms, and that all entries no matter what the topic gets to be divided into three concept universes. Sometimes an entry is a single word, sometimes a phrase, but in all cases an entry is a "communication unit" between speaker and listener. Naturally) "units" vary with the listener's understanding and attention. The purpose of using this listening activity as a method of taking notes is to increase the depth of understanding or the depth of communication taking place. As well, the purpose is to provide feedback to the speaker as to what got transmitted, and therefore the instrument is to thought of as an instructional tool and a self-instructional tool for the improvement of thinking, reading, listening, and speaking and writing and theory-building.

Everything gets classified into three. In the innermost appear all your ideas that represent ORIGIN, PRINCIPLE, ESSENCE, BEING, FIRST CAUSE, etc. In your topic, and in psychology generally, the concepts that fall in this innermost universe are the originating conditions for action, feeling, behavior, e.g.:

INTENTION, GOAL, END, MOTIVE, COMMITMENT, WILLPOWER, CONSCIOUSNESS INFLUX, etc. In your case: GOAL, STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS, INVOLVEMENT, AWAKENING, LEARNED HELPLESSNESS, ASC, INVOLVEMENT, SELF-HYPNOSIS, DRIVE. These are therefore the concepts that you use to explain where the causes of behavior originate from, in so far as we can study them objectively and empirically. These PRINCIPLE and PREMISE concepts you use unexplained, but they are obvious and we can easily agree with them.

The concepts you use that fall in the intermediate category are all those that are CAUSAL: in other Words, the innermost origins of behavior (ASC, GOALS, etc.) give rise to the CAUSES OF BEHAVIOR (intermediate). Finally3 the causal

or intermediate concepts give rise to the outermost concepts, i.e. those that deal with EFFECTS. In your topic, the CAUSAL concepts you use are shown in the intermediate circle of the graphic concepts: MENTAL TRAINING, REGRESSION PROGRESSION CONTROL, USE OF MENTAL IMAGERY, THOUGHT STOPPING ABILITY, POST-HYPNOTIC SUGGESTION, SUGGESTIBILITY, IDENTIFICATION, TIME SIGNALS, TRIGGERS, BAD IMAGES, METHODS, IMT, PSYCHOTONIC TRAINING, IDEOMOTOR TRAINING, GENERAL MUSCLE ACTIVIATION, INEFFECTIVE MENTAL SETS, ANTAGONISTIC OPERATIONS, NEW MENTAL SETS, EFFECTIVE IMAGES. All these concepts are CAUSES that originate from the innermost concepts discussed above and give rise to the outermost concepts discussed next.

The concepts you used that have to do with the outer form of behavior have been entered into the outermost boxes on the diagram-graph: PERFORMANCE, BEHAVIOR, SELF-MANAGEMENT, VOLUNTARY CONTROL CONCENTRATION, BREATHING CONTROL, BASIC TENSION MEASURES, CONFIDENCE FEELINGS, GOAL PROGRAMMING, MENTAL ROOM TALK TO ONESELF, CONDITION TRIGGERS, LEFT AND RIGHT BRAIN THINKING, NEGATIVE EMOTIONS, BREAKING NEW PERFORMANCE BARRIERS, BALANCED MUSCLE ACTION, GOAL ANALYSIS, GOAL SETTING, IPS.

To see this more vividly, you might wish to construct three concentric boxes, and put all your concepts in their appropriate boxes, and by visual inspection they will no doubt cluster into smaller concept-groups that may suggest further directions of development in your research and thinking. Here are some suggestions on how to do these sub-clusterings, each of which in effect represents a mini-scientific theory. Illustrations:

DERIVABLE EMPIRICAL HYPOTHESES FROM THE GRAPHIC CONCEPT ARRANGEMENT CALLED THE ENNEAD STRUCTURE:

Start with the arabic numbers in circles. (1) (2) (3) on Form COOl. Following the A,B,C route outward, GOAL or MOTIVATION originates MENTAL TRAINING efforts which cause better PERFORMANCE through SUGGESTIBILITY, TIME SIGNALS, THOUGHT STOPPING and other methods of MENTAL TRAINING. (That is a summary of the whole page, numbers 1 through 9)

Let's try the next one, Form C002. Starting with (1) and going through to (9):

LEARNED HELPLESSNESS originates BAD IMAGES from PAST INEFFECTIVE CONDITIONINGS; these then produce INNEFFECTIVE BEHAVIORS, HIGH BASIC TENSIONS, and LACK OF SELF-CONTROL (numbers 1 through 3).  ASC is the originating condition for the issue of METHODS OF SELF-IMPROVEMENT; these methods are the causes of VOLUNTARY CONTROL which is then achieved, as well as other behavioral evidences (CONCENTRATION, BREATHING CONTROL, etc.) (4 through 6)

Last one: Form C003. Numbers 1 through 3: INVOLVEMENT with GOAL or DRIVE is the originator for EFFECTIVENESS OF OPERATIONS: HIGH vs. LOW GENERAL MUSCLE ACTIVATION, MENTAL SET, which then eventuate in the effects of HIGH vs. LOW PERFORMANCE, EMOTIONAL CONTROL.

In the same manner many more propositions can be derived from the clustering of your concepts into three corresponding but separate universes, and having a prepositional relation such that innermost originates intermediate, which is the cause of the outermost. Please let me know if this helps.
