"Cyber-Psychology"
Braden Kato: Using Netscape for the second
time.
Braden Kato wrote, "Seems
as if the tedious task of going to the library and borrowing books is
becoming obsolete. The age of the computer and the Internet is here to
stay." This saying is located in the last sentence of his
paper. I'm finding out that the Internet is a lot more accessible to
me than the library is these days. I'm finding out that I spend more
time on the computer searching and scanning the reports, files, and
information that the computer calls up for me when I type in
information that I'm looking for. Not to mention that the
information that the computer provides to me is updated and more
recent than the library material. I must agree with Braden, the
library will soon be obsolete if the computer technology continues
to develop at the rate it is going or should I say growing. I'm one
of those people who think every year the computer technology is
widely expanding and the more distant my knowledge of the computer
world becomes apparent to me.
When I watch movies of what the future will be with computers, I start
to think and wonder that the computer technology is becoming so much like
that. Makes me wonder where I would be in this world of computers. The
more and more advance the computer technology becomes available, to me it
really starts looking like those movies. For example, Terminator 2,
Johnny Mnemonic, Virtuosity, and so forth. Hey, I'm starting to think and
worry that the
future will be like that. I guess because everything is becoming so
electronic that I wonder if I will make it in a world so computerized.
I'm already aware that the computers are more intelligent than I am. I've
got to admit that I don't know much about the computer but I bet the
computer knows me more and better than I know myself. Probably because
the computer knows how to work things in it and I don't. Not to mention,
after all the thoughts I have towards the computer, I start to wonder if
the computer is saying something to me. For instance, watch how you touch
my keyboard, don't push or slam on it, I can feel it too. Just wait and
see what I have up my sleeves, next time you're not looking, I'll delete
everything of yours.
I wouldn't put it pass the computer if I were you. I constantly
remind myself to care about the computer, but it doesn't work all the
time. I do start to take my frustration and anger on the keyboard when it
doesn't do what I want it to do. It's just impatience with the computer,
I know that and I remind myself that too.
Lori Morita: Using Netscape for the second
time.
In Lori's report, paragraph
four, she talks about e-mailing herself. "Not too bad when you're
lonely...you can always have something in your mailbox..." I think this
is true. I like it when I have e-mail every time I go into pine because I
like to see and read the interesting and exciting mail or letters that I
get from people. NO! I'm not bored or lonely, I just like the
fact that someone took the time out to think of me and included me in
their thoughts and emotions. A little hint, e-mail makes me happy and
satisfied that people care. It's lonely when you get no e-mail. If you
disagree, just wait and see. You'll find yourself bored with just nothing
to do but just send e-mail to others and no feedback or communication with
others. Okay, I'll say it. If you enjoy yourself having or receiving no,
e-mail; you're what I call or consider a Loner. Just kidding, it's sad to
hear that you only use e-mail to send messages and not to receive any.
Amy Lam's Report 2, My Adapting to the Internet. Her
section on Emotional Detachment.
"In
this technological world, people become less and less
in touch with other people's feeling." This is according to Amy
Lam from generation three on the Internet from Cyber-Psychology
class. I agree with her, computers today are taking the place of a
written letter and the highway of communication between two human
beings in a face to face interaction. Perhaps, this is considered
better than a letter because more than one person can read it because
it's available for anyone to see or read as long as it's on the
Internet. Or should I say Netscape.
However, it does one thing that is very important for the world today,
when computers start to substitute anything in life, doesn't anyone think
about the Social Effects that virtual reality will or may have on an
individual. Meaning, if a person is stuck or engross in computers and not
with human beings, doesn't that concern anyone about the social behaviors
of that individual? I wonder what the outcomes of the computer virtual
reality becomes to an individual who only wants to interact on the
computer and not interact with other human beings. I mean nobody would
get to know the person in real life. People will only have a vision or
illusion about the individual without even knowing how that person really
is in real life. Too me that's scary and frightening because the computer
world would have created a monster out of an individual.
Vance Mizuba's
Report2, My Adapting to the
Internet. His section on How Did I Get My Ideas for My Web Site?
I like the section on How
Did I Get My
Ideas for My Web Site? In his last paragraph he talks about how he
explored the Netscape and how he played around with the html tags to
understand them. He even included links to the help source that he
used. Curious and/or want to go there? Here it
is.
I too had to play with the addresses and tags of the places I liked
and wanted to place into my reports and files. I still need to figure out
where I'm at in order to know the address of my files so I can link them
together. It's hard and confusing at times but once I get them going, I
smile at the computer because the computer went and did everything I
wished or wanted it to do. Gee, I make it sound like magic or
something?
Well, surprise, I feel as though it's magic at times because I can't
believe I figured out the right html tags to use. Well you try and sit
down at the computer and figure the tags out without a single clue and
than before your eyes you do something you totally didn't understand and
think no way it'll work but try it anyway; only to find out it works. I
bet you'll be smiling at the computer too, not to mention that the people
around you may think you're crazy because you're smiling at the computer.
But what do they know, you just figured out your own problem without
knowing it, just think, if they did the same thing, you'll think they're
crazy and weird too. Think about it this way, everyone has to go crazy
and nuts sometime or another. Hey so what, I'll admit, it's a little fun
figuring out my problems on the computer. However, only if and when I
have time to sit down calmly and think clearly what the computer is really
doing and how I want the computer to do things for me.
Anthony Chung's Report 1, section on resistance.
"Resistance
to change seems to be a natural behavior that is used by everyone."
I for one am one of those people who have a hard time at learning
something. I take a lot of time to figure out things that the
computer and teacher is saying at times. I guess it's due to my lack
of paying attention or keeping/getting my mind off things that it is
on.
Anthony even talks about people who bite their nails feel lost if they
are prevented from biting them, I have been biting my nails since I was
a child and still do. I DO NOT FEEL LOST IF I'M PREVENTED FROM BITING
THEM, I start to rub my hands or fingers with my nails. I have been
trying to stop for over two-three years now. I start biting them when I
feel frustrated and anxious. However, when I'm on the computer I find
that I tend to NOT want to bit them.
I think resistance to learning how things work on the computer in this
class will result to the person dropping out of this course. I think that
Dr. James should require his class to do four reports and finish two of
them before mid-term and not do all four of them before mid-term. Perhaps
it's just me who feels this way because once I start something, I have to
see it to the end in order to go on to the next thing (in this case,
report). Is that considered resistance to complete reports before
mid-term? If so, what's the point of grading at mid-term when nothing is
completed. I for one is determined to complete all four reports before
mid-term (next week Monday 10/28/96-midnight). Sorry Dr. James, I need
to have each report completed because I can't stand unfinished reports
once I started on a thought.
Ronel Agarpao's Report 1: Studying the Online
Generational Curriculum in Traffic Psychology, section on Impressions of
the Generational Curriculum.
"I
guess in the
beginning it seems very hard, but as you continue to go online it gets
easy and fun." I agree because when I started on the Internet last
semester I didn't know a thing to what the Internet was or its
capabilities. I was so frustrated and angry at the computer that I felt
like throwing it out the window. I spent my whole life in CLIC Lab. I
had no life last semester and I soon found myself improving where I
thought I wouldn't. Now I'm so happy and satisfied that I stuck with it
last semester. I learned so much and to tell you the truth, I realize now
that the Internet can do so much and is so capable of many things. My
knowledge of the Internet is still limited but I learned so much from when
I first started. I enjoy getting to the root of my problems and solving
them is the best part because when I do the same mistake, I know exactly
where my problem is located.
However, one down fall that I came across, is that I still get on edge
when it comes to mid-term point. I still experience anxiety and worries
about finishing the reports on time. But this semester is more stressful,
Dr. James wants all of our reports up by mid-term. A lot more stress than
last semester, we only had to put up two by mid-term.

that Dr. James has, Traffic Psychology! I quoted from two students from
each Generational Curriculum section that are on the Internet.
Terri
Slaughter's Homepage.
Terri Slaughter's report on Homework week 15,
In the beginning there was darkness.
"In the beginning, there was darkness..." and "It
took a lot of patience, persistence, a very hard head, and a little help
from my friends." I realize that in order to survive in this class,
people need assurance and help from others when they come across a
problem. I found that this class is a survival class that doesn't
involve, survival of the fittest, it involves a group of people who are
willing to help each other out when things get hard and tough. Also each
individual needs to develop patience, persistence, and control over
emotions, feelings, thoughts, and motivation in order to survive.
Everyone works as a team and group to get everything done.
I notice that when people need encouragement's, they need it from the
class and not the teacher. Actually, I'm finding that out in all of
my classes here at the University of Hawaii. I guess because students
bond to each other and not the teacher because the students
experience the same things and situations in class. I find this
interesting.

Kendall Matsuyoshi's section on "How Far I've Come."
I think his site tells it all about the expectations of this class when
we follow this class to the end.
Jason

Jason Nakasato's Report on Self Assessment As A
Driver; section, Conclusions For Myself And For Traffic Psychology
"The
benefits of traffic
psychology [replace traffic psychology with Cyber-Psychology] are
limitless because through it, we are made more aware of those around us.
Basically, what it does, is take us away from our egocentricity and shows
us how social our world has become." I learned that the Internet has
a capability of bring people from all over the world together. Meaning
that the Internet provides everyone a chance to read and view each others
sites. Communications are now becoming a telecommunication port through
the Internet or online. It has grown so rapid that I realize that we are
growing into a world of computerized knowledge. If you have a child, you
better start introducing them to the computer technology if they aren't
already.

Furukawa's Homepage.
Alan Furukawa's Report 3: Traffic Psychology on
the Internet, Resolving the Conflicts within Ourselves.
I
think
everyone should go here because here talks about "Resolving the
Conflicts within Ourselves." Perhaps this site can change your attitude
and feelings about life and the world.
I particularly like his final thought on this report. How very
true this says it all about life. Reads as follows:Life is a
song--sing it.
Life is a game--play it.
Life is a challenge--meet
it.
Life is a dream--realize it.
Life is a sacrifice--offer
it.
Life is love--enjoy it.

Michelle
Alonzo's Homepage for Traffic Psychology.
Michelle Alonzo's Report 2: Adapting to the
Internet, Future Assignments.
Michelle talks about feeling guilty for
procrastinating until the last day to do her assignments. I know
exactly what she is talking about. In my other classes I'm starting to
procrastinate because I want to finish these reports by mid-term.
Unfortunately some classes have to be placed on hold because reports need
to be completed and working. I know I should've started earlier and waste
no time.
However, I have a situation that needs to be cleared up and
unfortunately this is a week before mid-term grades are posted. But
through it all, I'll spend the rest of the week and weekend praying and
hoping that this situation doesn't mess my mid-term grade.
Procrastination is a word that should have been added to my middle
name. I guess I can blame my mother and father for those genes. Like
researchers say, your intelligence is passed on to you through the X
chromosome. Therefore, if your a female, you can blame your mother
and father for your intelligence. If you're a male, you can only
blame your mother because she gave you the X chromosome. Just a
thought I'd share with you guys.

Abraham (Abe) Caubuag's Report 2: Adapting to the
Internet, Conclusion.
Abe was the person in our Traffic Psychology class that was
struggling and defeating his odds on the Internet. I'm so glad that he
stuck through our class and overcame a lot of the obstacles last
semester. I think if you want to know and experience the struggles that
Abe went through, go to his Report 2.
Read the whole report. He has a conclusion
that I think tells everything that you may
experience yourselves at the end of the semester in Traffic Psychology
and Cyber-Psychology on the Internet.
If you're a visitor and not in Dr. James class, I recommend you go
through Generation #3 in Traffic Psychology. There Report 2, Adapting to
the Internet, talks and discusses about the difficulties that they
experienced to the fine qualities of the class and the outcomes of their
problems and technophobias. Interested enough? I would be, so here's
the link to the Generation #3 files. I recommend you go straight to
their topical Index or Homepage first. Why? So you can understand what
the contents are in each file. Here's the link to Generation #3
site. Enjoy your journey
into one of the Generational Curriculum of Traffic Psychology at the
University of Hawaii.

My Process of Learning the Internet:
I thought that this class would be less of a burden to me than last
semester class (Psy #459) with Dr. James, but it hasn't turned out that way
yet. I'm still struggling with the work and I still haven't been able to
work hand in hand with my files from Traffic Psychology and this class
(Cyber-Psychology); not to mention my Research class with Dr. James (PSY
#499).
However, I did learn one thing so far this semester, DON'T ever blame
yourself for your UNFORTUNATE LUCK; with your CSS Account not working in
its proper order. The person who is in charge of your account (to be in
working order) is busy and full of other students bugging him to get their
files going too. Unfortunately you have to sit and wait patiently that
he'll never forget you and pray he'll get back to you soon with the news
of your account working in the proper order that you wish it to be
in.
Sad news to report though, just because your account isn't working,
don't mean you can goof around. It really gives you the chance to catch
up with your sleep, NOT!!!! A little word of advice, by all means if your
account isn't working, please search and finish the assignments. Save it
on a disk or two and when the account is ready, all you need to do is ftp
it or fetch it into your account.
How to FTP and Fetch:
FTP is on the IBM. If you want it to go directly into your account
instead of putting UHUNIX type in CSS or was it www.soc.hawaii.edu. Than
all you do is highlight the file and point the arrow to the right. Your
disk files are located to the left of the screen and your CSS account
should be to the right of the screen. However, if your screen deals with
the accounts being on top of the other, you need to figure out which is
your disk and CSS account.
Fetch on the Macintosh: You need to
find fetch. In CLIC LAB, you need to go into the hard drive and into
Internet. Click onto Fetch, keep clicking Fetch until you get to New
Connection. In the host box you put in www.soc.hawaii.edu and login to
your CSS Account. Than just click on put and select the file you want to
put into your account and than select raw data. The file than should be
inside your CSS Account.
I have been dealing with a problem with my
CSS Account. I have been waiting patiently for an answer and thought I'd
take Shawn Cobb-Adam's advice and went to search for Hengel. I found
myself relying on Hengel to solve my problem and I learned that I had to put
my impatience behind me and have total trust in Hengel. It was a must for
me to understand my problem and Hengel's situation. I owe him a great
deal of THANKS because without him I wouldn't understand where I'm located
within the CSS server.
I found out I'm in two locations and to modify one section, I had to
go into another section and change that site too. So now all I have to do
is change all my links and addresses into one section in the CSS server.
Hengel worked to keep one login in name for me; however, if I do get
confused again, he gave me an option, to provide me with another CSS
account for my Psy #459 class from last semester. A bit confusing? So can
you understand or see the time Hengel and I put in to understand each
other and what each other wanted out of this situation. I bet his ears
are happy to have a break from me.
Mid-term, taught me how to cope with the situations that arose
with me and to talk matters out with those who need to be involved with
my problem. I know now that when I need help I can rely on Hengel and
Dr. James to get me through it. I just didn't realize that my problem
had to do with having two separate locations, now that mid-terms is next
week, I am now concern with having all my addresses and links working in
the correct order. I find that the solution to my problem is the biggest
relief and concern that I have right now, everything else seems so small
because this problem sets me back until the beginning of the semester. I
feel as though I'm starting the semester all over again. Feels weird.
Mid-term has passed and I was surprised that I got a grade for my
current files that are up. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish my
reports 3 and 4 by mid-term. I tired my best to do them but found that I
got stuck with other questions concerning my problem. They got solved
a few days before 11/12/96 (we got our mid-term grades handed to us).
I'm finally problem free in regards to my CSS Account. Deepest
gratitude and Thanks to Robert Hengel. I understand what my problems
involved and understand how to deal with them now. Finally to get rid of
all the headaches and confusions that occurred while trying to figure
things out for myself. My classmates were very patient with my situation
and I have to give credit to them for standing by my side when I needed a
helping hand and advice. Thanks guys! I just hope that I didn't
hold anyone back for my reports not being up and finished. I'm
trying very hard to work on them at home and get them Fetched or FTP
into my account.
From here (11/13/96) I need to complete those two reports quickly. I
need to notify my whole class when I have them up so they can visit my
site. You see, it doesn't help or pay to fall behind in this course.
Wow, this course is very stressful compare to Traffic Psychology. I'll
continue my journey into completing my two reports and update the others
as soon as I can. Until than, I'll see you later.
To Future students, please don't ever relax in this class because
before you know it you're behind and Dr. James is right behind you
pushing you to get a move on your reports. Believe me or not, but take
it from a student who's had him last semester for Traffic Psychology and
this semester for Cyber-Psychology and Research in Psychology #499
class. I wouldn't put this off until mid-term comes around because he
grades you at mid-term and than you have less pressure from him. A
little word of advice, this class isn't to relax, you need to work to earn
the grade you want or deserve.
Hello, Dr. James! I have an advice for you, I think it was helpful
that you gave us the hand-out on the commands to know from last semester.
For example, define what cd, cp, mv, rm, and etc. From talking to other
students in Cyber-Psychology (Psy #409a) that sheet would have helped
them to understand what the commands mean. I realize that the book we
bought for this class has them, but, it would have been helpful to go over
them in class. Just a little something that you may want to reconsider.
Thank You!
Here is a guide page that I created if you want to know what the
commands mean in UNIX and HTML. My guide!

Overview of My Learning
Process:
Through the process of learning the Internet in a Cyber-Psychology
class, I found that one can still maintain frustration, confusion, doubt,
and anxiety; even though you're experienced with the World Wide Web.
Waiting for your files to be constructed and created to your own
expectations can become frustrating because you'll find yourself not quite
satisfied with the present outcome of the site. So, you continue to
change, create, and modify the site over and over again. Soon you find
yourself so wrapped up and you realize that you haven't even begun to
write your reports. So by the time you need to finish them, you'll
experience stress, anxiety, and confusion because you haven't finished
what you expected to finish. Not to mention doubt that you can complete
your reports/files before the due date.
I came to a conclusion, do the best you can with the time that you
got and ignore the anxiety, stress, and pressure that your mind is
overcome with. Just keep working to finish the site and you can continue
or modify your files/reports at a later time. However, you need to
remember that you need to complete them all in full working order by the
time the course is ended if you want to good and decent grade.
A little word of advice, coping is the number one thing you need to
have control over in this class. You need to face your problems and find
solutions to them as you go along in this course. The courses that Dr.
James has at the University of Hawaii (Cyber-Psychology [Psy #409],
Traffic Psychology [Psy #459], and Research class [Psy #499]) is a pure
and truthful experience that you'll find most rewarding at the end of the
course. You can't judge the course until you finished and completed the
course, so don't bet on getting anything out of the course in the
beginning of the semester. Why? The truth is, the beginning of this
course, is really just the beginning into your inner strength of
knowledge and wisdom. Not to mention, the rewards in this
course really comes at the end because you achieved so much as the course
goes on in the semester.
I'm looking forward to learning and gaining more about the Internet
and Social Psychology with Dr. James. I realize now that my failures are
just the beginning to all the problems and situations that I need to face
as this course continues.
