report4.html all there is Psychology, which is the study of the mind and in a way our spirit. Cyber, is a synthetic existance or a presence located in the realm of the internet, for our purposes. Principles in this form are the aspects and regulating laws of this ascending land,(Cyberspace). In my opinion the principles to Cyber-Psychology are very flexible. Basically the only laws of the internet at this time, is that it mirrors the mind. All people have the capability to be good or evil. This exists in their thoughts and thirsts for different things in life. A perfect reflection of our hungers exist on the internet. Everything we can think of, good or bad may potentially be there. A replication of humanity in all of its imperfect splendor. These are the principles that govern Cyber-space and are as flexible as the human mind. There also has to be a flexability for the process of evolution to exist. Sometimes some of the lesser Cyber-species fall through the cracks. For example when you don't use absolute links, your thoughts and ideas are lost. Another time when a Cyber-species dies is when no one has interest in it. This is the same as real life. It is a fact, that if you deprive your young baby love and affection, it will die or may be severely handicapped. Only when there are loving interactions with it can the child be healed, if only partially. In Cyber-Space, when there are no others that have interest and desire to reach your documents, they die. To have a hit, many hits and people linking to your html pages, feed your creature and it is swept up in evolution. It may be the template for other html's based on the idea of yours. This is how is survives and how Cyber-Space evolves.
Who would be interested in Cyber-Psychology?
People who would be interested in the Cyber-Psychology would include all walks of life. Historians will have interest in the world wide web. When in the history of the world has there been such a neat, organized wealth of information, so readily available? To my knowledge, never. It will be easy for people to record and find out about our world civilization in the 20th century. The facts will be more accurate and richer than any generation before. That may be of some interest to people. Researchers might be interested to know, how all of this information will effect the human race. Will this kick us up to a new evolutionary level? Just think how wonderful it will be for our children to be growing up with the Web at their fingertips. If knowledge is power there is no telling how far they will go. This might be a little "out there" but often Sci-Fi ficton does become factual. I anticipate a time when we will access all of this information directly though our brains. This way we will jump from site to site as fast as our bodies can take us. We will process information at record speeds. I assume most of us have more than fifteen ram anyway. As we exercise our brains they will develop or we will develop. We will unlock our potential (It has been said that we only use 10% of our brain.). Then we will certainly evolve further. Yes, you may call me an optimist. As far as I can see, everyone who is interested in developing their mind should be interested in Cyber-Space. If you are content doing nothing with yourself and living a stagnant, unfufilled life, that is your own business.
What are the directions and topics of Cyber-Psychology?
Cyber-Psychology is an organism that extends and encompasses all levels of the human imagination. It's directions are endless and it's topics are limitless. It is similar to what Einstein said about knowledge (his theory of the light and dark circle of knowledge). It goes like this, there is always a small circle of light surrounded by a much larger circle of darkness. The circle of light represents what we know. The circle of darkness represents the questions we have about the unknown. Even though we learn more and more we will always have more questions. New light creates new darkness. For instance if no one came up with slilced bread, there would be no need for us to think about toasting slices of bread. Hence there is no need for us to invent a toaster. Anyway, new information breeds new questions and the unknown. Cyber-Psychology also works this way too. There will inevitably be massive amounts, of new thoughts, flooding the essence of Cyber-Psychology. This makes the directions and topics of Cyber-Psychology a land with out a end.
Who are the people that are interested in it?
Currently there are two different categories of interested people. One, those that have heard about this new phenomena and have curiosity about it. Two, those that have hands on experience with this new medium and have had their lives, forever changed. Then, there are those who have no interest at all. It may be because of technophobia or just a desire to live life without the machine. Perhaps, people practicing the Quaker religion, would not like to be involved with Cyber-Psychology. The hands on individuals can't help but be interested in how Cyber-Psychology will change human existence, as we know it. I am interested in Cyber-Psychology. I have high hopes that all of this information, will benefit humanity in a higher way. That we will use it to better our selves and not wallow in the mud. I am not blind to the fact that some will wallow. That is human nature. I just aspire to see us as a whole in a better place, as a result of our use of technology.
What is virtual reality?
I am following Dr. James'
lead on this. I have broken these two words down. This is what I found, and what I interpret it to mean. As defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary. VIRTUAL : being in essence or in effect though not formally recognized or admitted. Virtually : almost entirely : nearly 2 : for all practical purposes. Then there is REALITY : 1 the quality or state of being real. 2: some things real. 3: the totality of real things and events. This means to me that there is an alternate state of existiance. This altentate place is Cyber-Space. It is a real place, there is no doubt that it exists. It is tangible. I can print things out from a specific site and hold it in my hands. Yet it is for the most part non-tangible. I don't physically go to Japan to visit the Hiroshima site. However I do experience it, this is a mental process, memories are made, information is stored and then I have these feelings about it. Dr. James
suggests that virtual reality is a spiritual place and I aggree. He says that emotion, thoughts and feelings equal spirtual substance. This is from a dualistic point of view. Dualism is believing that there is more to a human being, than the mass of carbon, chemichals, electricity and neurons that makes us up. It is a view of a soul, a spirit in harmony with the physical body. That when we die the soul is detached from the body that we currently live within. Dr. James also says that virtual reality is nothing but mental reality and on the internet collective interests and intentions equal access and usage, which create virtual presence. In Cyber-Space your virtual presence is not limited to what your physical body looks like. The heart of who you are, is how you present your self with your thoughts. You can be whom ever you want to be. You can be raceless, faceless and sexless if you wish. Why would someone want to be different, on the internet, from who they are in reality. Maybe they would like to experience life from a different perspective. What is it like to be a woman? Do others respond to you differently? How so? I got this idea from watching Oprah
There was a young Caucasian man on the show. He wanted to see what it was like to live as a young, African-American man, for a day. They did the make-up on him and indeed he looked the part. After spending all day in another man's shoes, doing very normal day to day things, he had a conclusion. He believed that, truely he was treated differently by people. He said," I never knew what a privilage it was to live as a white man." He got to see first hand that in general, people are not as nice to Afican-American men as to Causasian men in Chicago. So the point is not really a racial thing. It is that different types of people in different professions are treated uniquely. Is that why people pretend to be others online? Perhaps yes, maybe they just want to see what it is like to walk on the other side of the fence.
What's the relationship between cyberspace and the mind?
Cyberspace and the mind are infinitely bound. That is primarly because cyberspace was created by the human mind. The virtual reality of cyberspace is a realm for the mind and the spirit. This is because we shed our bodily cloak and experience this world though the mind. The mind being both mechanical and spiritual. This is with emphasis on the spiritual side. Once again I draw from the concept of Dualism, which is physical vs. non-physical existiance. It incorperates emotion, thoughts and feelings. That is the affective, (non-material). Then there is the cognitive aspect,(the conscious, mental activity of thinking, learning and remembering). Lastly there is a sensory motor function of the mind. This is most removed from spirituality. It is the basic, chemical, electronic, functioning mind. yet, removal of any of these three, results in the ill-functioning of the mind, as we know it. The biggest concept is that cyberspace is filled with a community of minds. These minds have collective interests. This is what makes cyberspace a live entity, itself.
What is the spiritual significance of clicking?
To the best of my knowledge, the idea clicking having spiritual significance was originally conceived of by Dr.James.
This is a deep thought. It is deep because it makes you think. Even if you doubt it, you will spend a bit mulling it over. How is this possible? I thought spiritual experiences only happened to people like, John when he starved himself in the desert. Remember, he got his only nourishment from occasionally eating a locust or two. I realized and was affirmed in class that spiritual significance, was not so easy to define. Back to the dictionary, I need to find the root. Spirtual: 1 of relating to, consisting of, or affecting the spirit. : INCORPOREAL 2: of relating to sacred matters. 3: ecclesiastical rather than lay or temporal. Then there is significance: 1: something signified : MEANING : 2 : SUGGESTIVENESS 3: CONSEQUENCE, IMPORTANCE. So it is relating to the spirit and incorperating sacred matters. I read this to mean matters of the mind, interests, things of importance. That definition does fit into what clicking is. You go there because of your desire to connect. There are most likely others there too. They are like you in a sense that they have common interests. In this you form a community of commonality. The presense is not solid though it is a community in another realm, it is somewhat untangible. Spirits are an essence perhaps quite similar to this too. This creates a warm, fuzzy, thought that this place (cyber-space) is different than the earthly, realm that we tromple. A higher place obtainable to us only partly and with our feet still on the ground. There are many parelles to this. It is just fascinating to consider the possibilities, of just what humanity is getting it self into. It is plausible that we are ascending.
