What is Cyberpsychology?

Cyberpsychology can be broken down into two parts, cyber and psychology. Cyber deals with computers and psychology deals with the study of the mind and human behavior. Therefore, cyberpsychology is the study of the mind and human behavior and its interaction with one's self and others while on computers. The use of computers on the internet facilitates interaction with other people, not just with a computer.

Cyberspace is experienced in a virtual reality with actual communities and interactions. Humans dictate what is interesting and what is visited through their emotions and feelings about the topics. The study of cyberspace and the human mind and behavior is what constitutes cyberpsychology.

What are its principles?

The principles of cyberpsychology basically are made up of the things discussed in the previous question. They include the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of the users, their thinking process and their minds, and their actions of using the computer.

One main principle is virtual presence. This is necessary for cyberpsychology because this is what it is studying. Virtual presence dictates the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of users and creates interactivity and presence within communities, text, and other media available on the internet.

The other main principle of cyberspace is the mind. Cyberspace is made up by the mind and how it is used in order to create links and hits and participate in usegroups and chats. Communities are created through the mind, by what it is interested in and what it is motivated by.

Who would be interested in it?

The people who I believe would be most interested in cyberpsychology would be psychologists who are addicted to and interested in computers and the internet. I think being a part of virtual reality and acquiring virtual presence triggers people to become interested in this topic. For example, the students in this class have become interested in it because of the awareness of the topic and our participation of it. We all wonder what are presence is like on the computer and how it changes and is affected by certain variables.

I think that there is going to be a growing awareness of this field because it is so new and relates to so many people. The world is changing because of the internet and so how is it going to affect the future generations? How are they going to change, how will it affect the behavior of our children? There are so many things that can be explored relating to cyberpsychology because it is such a big part of life today.

What are its directions and its topics?

Dr. Suler's page looks at the topics related to cyberpsychology. Some of these topics include psychological space, sensory experience, access to relationships, and identity flexibility and anonymity. There are many topics that can be covered in cyberpsychology because it is such a new and growing field.

Some topics covered by Dr. James include: Virtual reality, communal mind, the virtual book, forming virtual communities, technophobia, resistance to information seeking. The concept of virtual reality and the internet are virtually new areas and are becoming increasingly popular, therefore, it is a new and quickly growing field. As it grows, more and more information will become available and more opinions will be voiced concerning this subject. Until then, we still have Dr. James and Dr. Suler.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality is the creation of cyberspace. It is like the fourth dimension. It is real and accessible but not in its physical form. In Dr. James' paper he defines virtual reality through interactivity. As I wrote earlier, it is created by the minds of the people who access and interact with cyberspace. We all become a part of cyberspace through the interaction of links, search engines, e-mail, newsgroups, and online chatgroups. These bring us to virtual reality. Although a chatgroup is not physically eye-to-eye, they are still communicating and creating some kind of presence amongst themselves. It is all real but not required to be physical.

What is the relationship between cyberspace and the mind?

Cyberspace is created by the mind. From the creation of the programs, the hardware, and the internet to the users of them, everything is created through the minds of these humans. These thoughts of the mind are then what make up cyberspace. It is a virtual space, like the mind, and is created through the interlinking of locations.

What is the spiritual significance of clicking on a link?

The act of clicking on a link is spiritual because it is creating virtual reality and is an extension of the mind which comes from the human spirit. The act of clicking becomes spiritual because it reflects the interests and intentions of a person. When someone clicks on a link, it reflects interest and requires a decision to go there. Not clicking is a moral act, according to Dr. James. When you refuse to click or don't want to it is a choice or a judgment made on your own part and reflects your spirit.
