The first day of class really wasn't what I was expecting it to be like. I knew the class structure would be in a manner were the students are able to work together, but the classroom community and group quizzes took me by surprise. We discussed concepts such as life space where an individual is aware of not just physical, but also the real forces that surround us. Collective Learning was also introduced to us and it should be interesting to see how this type of class setting works.

Today was quite an experience! The first thing that pops into my mind is learning the Forces Song. It brought back memories of Senior singing rehearsals for High School. I never did like my voice and was always afraid I'd go off key and the person next to me would hear. I must admit, however, it was fun.

The next thing I remember is the random grouping. I'm glad we used that format because it gives us a chance to get to know other people in the class. So many times in the standard class lecture, you go in, sit, take notes and leave. There's no time to talk to anyone else.

The quiz this time was a bit challenging. were tearing our brains out trying to remember all the social organization factors and even got into a little debate over it, I think we made it though!

My response to this class isn't as positive-as the past two I've written. I don't blame the staff for this though, it's just that the concepts of Social Psychology Methodology were difficult to grasp in just one class. When we gathered into our group of six and answered the quiz questions we were almost positive we had at least three right. Turned out we only had one right.

It was fun seeing other people's pictures of their families and friends. I did feel a little uncomfortable showing mine though . Brought back memories of second grade show and tell. This class is really full of surprises!

It was interesting learning about the different entomologies in our lecture today. I discovered that when we tried figuring out the meanings of other words (quiz), it really isn't that difficult if you really apply it to examples and break it down.

I enjoyed performing the milling activity because I got to meet several other students in the community and it was interesting to see the various numbers in each group (if there were a majority under a certain category).

I found today's lecture on Social Competence very enlightening in the sense that I wasn't aware of how I control my emotions such as keeping quiet or trying not to be sleepy until it was introduced to me today. When I tried to concentrate on what I was doing while trying not to be hungry, it was really difficult...takes a lot of concentration!

I wish we had gotten a chance to get together in our groups to discuss the Money Thoughts Project. Right now it's somewhat vague as to what we're supposed to do. I checked it out at Gartley though and reviewing Fall '79's projects explained it pretty clearly. It's going to be difficult trying to note down everytime I think about money. I've discovered I don't think about it as often as I thought I did.

Reviewing the grading system in the syllabus for the projects were a bit difficult to understand too. Some of the steps seem like the same thing-only phrased differently. Hopefully that will be explained later.

Class was confusing today. There were so many new terms and since we had an interruption in the middle of the lecture I kind of lost my attention and got lost when Dr. James continued. I did gain a better understanding of the Money Thoughts Project since we couldn't discuss it the last time. It took a lot of "communicating" to finally understand basically what we have to do. It's a lot of work and time involved in this class but I am enjoying it and learning from it too.

Before class I had a very interesting talk with Diane Nahl about the work I had done in the DRA center the day before. She then made an observation that the two of us were wearing clothes of the same color. I- thought that was pretty funny because I would never have noticed it myself.

The lecture itself was pretty good. We discussed more terms regarding money thoughts...how they all inter-relate to lead up to money thoughts. The dyadic quiz helped in exemplifying the meanings to make sure that we knew how each term is used. I noticed that each term we learned today has to do with what we do everyday such as our interior dialog. We don't really realize that we talk to ourselves (even if not verbally) until it's pointed out to is.

The team discussions were o.k.. We all felt a bit insulted when Dr. James said we were a "junk" group since we weren't really getting into a "Money Thoughts" discussion. The last time we got together we asked all our questions and had everything pretty much understood. During this discussion we were pointing out our own money thoughts to each other.

Before class started, Diane Nahl and I had a nice discussion about our back problems and the types of food we eat. We moved on to the topic of Money Thoughts and as I discovered that several times I didn't know I was having a Money Thought until Diane had pointed it out to me. She asked me if I remember having any Money Thoughts that later affected a relationship I had with someone and only then did I remember that I did.

I enjoyed getting together in the team groups to discuss our Money Thought projects. We got into a little debate over what is considered a money thought and what factors lead to money thoughts. Some people in our group believed they didn't think about money at all except for when they first wake up in the morning and figure out how much money they have for the day.

As for the quiz on the terms you gave us in class today, I have been having the hardest time putting together a paragraph that all the words would relate. I'm especially having problems with "face work", but I'll try my best... (will hand in next DFF)

In our lecture today we discussed the concept of transactional engineering, which is the way we manage our trans-actions or activities in our daily round. An individual doesn't usually stop and think out how they are going to organize something such as their Money Thoughts, rather, they just do it unconsciously. Only when you are in a position where you have to contemplate on your organizing techniques, do you realize that you are managing your daily transactions. I was quite impressed with the comparison Dr. James made of humans being like a doughnut with the outer and inner environment, and how it all blends in with the basis that environment = social psychological forces.

Our team quiz was quite a challenge today. We discovered that our group had several conflicting views as to how we should put our terms together into a paragraph. It did help us in our communicating process, however, and was a lot of fun too.

It was also interesting to discuss intimidation. It made me think of several experiences I've had where I was in the position of being intimidated. I feel intimidation is a situation everyone hates being in unless they have total control of their emotions.

The topic of Intimidation is always fun to discuss with others. It's interesting to see what people agree on as being an "intimidating situation." Intimidation must be one of the most uncomfortable situations to be in.

In dealing with the characteristics of Genetic Culture, I discovered that I never really notice how they take place in my daily round until they were pointed out to me, just like our money thoughts. I thought about each characteristic and speculated on my past experiences in my daily round that certain aspects were visible. Take for example, the factor of Assimilated Interior Dialog, I noticed that my tone of voice will change depending on the forces, such as my mood, the situation and the person(s) whom I am speaking to.

I've also noticed that in the past, if I were having an argument with my parents and the phone would ring and my mother would answer the phone, her tone of voice would change from an angry one to a very soft, angelic tone instantaneously.

An example of Standardized Register which really shocked me was that I was watching t.v. and a commercial came on. I saw the back of a guy as he was walking into a restaurant and I said to myself, "that guy looks like Darby!" Then a front shot was shown of the same person and it was him I was so surprised by my ability to recognize him from his walk and back appearance.

Intimidation is a very interesting topic to discuss and contemplate. There are so many intimidating situations that I find myself in and don't know how to overcome them.

I enjoyed Morna Simeona's lecture on the Ho'opono'pono. What she said about our subconscious and others feeling our anger and that we have to resolve our resentments made me think about experiences where this has occurred. When members in my family, for example, aren't getting along, there is a lot of tension in the air that can be felt by the other family members. It is uncomfortable until the problem has been resolved-- "huddle", where, forgiveness is asked of each other.

Quiz: The chart Dr. James drew for us in class shows me how the Psycho-spiritual forces in the community work. From the psychospiritual forces there is "socio-metry" or our face work, where social events have larger socio-metric elements than we recognize. This stage represents the sub-conscious described above. Next, the Remedy or "ritual" represents the transmuting stage. Here, the apologizing or relieving of one's inner feelings occurs. Once all this is achieved, there is a "Balance of Order" or as Morna explained, the Divine Order where there is love, peace and light I feel these three steps are important in keeping calm and are able to prevent ourselves from feeling weighed down by our problems if we use the process of transmuting.

I realize we just had a lecture emphasizing the important factors required to meet the Advanced Format for our DFF's. I feel that these qualities will not only aid us in expressing ourselves more theoretically, but it will also enhance our abilities in witnessing the social psychological forces in our daily round. When we reflect on our intimidation situations, for example, we must review the entire situation--what led to the situation and our reaction when it occurred. In writing our DFF's, we must also review the concepts discussed in lecture and apply it to ourselves. We must try and see every angle.

The alumni interviews helped to give me a better understanding of how the class managers feel towards the course. I enjoyed Alma's statement that she relates whatever she learns in the class with her work and everything she does. I've also discovered that I have been applying certain concepts in my daily round also. Now I have noticed that when I am speaking with friends, associates, family--anyone I communicate with, I have been observing their face work and have also been trying to control mine. By observing other's face work, I am able to evaluate them--their thoughts and sincerity and this has helped me to have better relationships.

In the beginning of the lecture, Dr. James asked, "Why are there Hotseats?" The concept of Territoriality offers a logical explanations every individual has their own Personal Space which acts as a barrier or force field around them. When another individual whom we feel uncomfortable with invades our Personal Space, we feel Intimidated. When Dr. James said that you can tell how intimate two people are by observation of the amount of space between them, I thought about a couple on their first date compared-to the same couple about a month or two since they first met. On the first date, both are very aware of guarding their Territory and feel somewhat invaded and intimidated should the other trespass their barrier. Once the two have gotten to know each other well and feel comfortable in each other's presence, however, there is no space between them and they have overcome their Intimidation.

Quiz: Link the five concepts in a serious paragraph.

Every species has a sense of Territoriality . The human species, however, has a community like no other due to the fact that they are a Speech Community. The Progress Reports and other projects recorded in the DRA of previous community classroom generation reflect the Psychohistory of the community with their own unique sense of Identity and Reputation.
