As soon as you can get the papers that need to be scanned in start familiarizing yourself with the scanner because it does take some getting used to. It is also very time consuming. It doesn't take too long for the page to be scanned, the part that takes long is the corrections.
OmniPage Pro is the OCR (character recognition) program that will read the text on the pages that you have scanned. You will be scanning the pages using this program (or some other character recognition program) and saving the pages on your diskette in this program also. When you save the pages be sure that in the Save Options box you check the line that says, Save Several Pages Under One Name. This will allow you to save ten pages under one file name. As you scan all you have to do is change the paper and click on Auto Scan. This will scan the page and perform the OCR. When you are done with the first page then go on to the second page and do the same thing. At the end of the ten pages then you go to File and Save As. This will save all your pages under the file name that yu give it. When you are done saving then go to Close and start on your next ten. This is the mistake I made, I was saving each page under a different name because I didn't think I could save ten pages under one name. Half way through my scanning I learned that you could save ten pages under one name and so I started to do it that way. Now you have to use a word processor to spell check the document.
Using an HTML editor will be of great help when you are done spell checking. A program such as Corell Word Perfect 7.0 will add all the HTML codes in the document for you. Under the File menu go to Internet Publisher and then open your document. This will add in the codes for you and the tool bar has the tools for Web documents. When you save it, save it as an HTML file. When you upload the file through FTP all the codes will be done for you.
Using the Adobe Photoshop or some other kind of image scanning program will be very useful
when you have to scan tables. The Adobe Photoshop 4 is a very good program to use. It will
scan
the table for you and allow you to make changes to the table such as cropping it, making the text
darker, and reducing the size. When you first start the program under the File menu you need to
go to Import, then Twain 32. From there you Prescan the table. After it is pre-scanned then you
can crop the table to make it so that when you scan it, it will scan only around the borders of the
table. Then you Scan the image. After that you can use Adjust which will allow you to change
the Brightness/ Contrast. Also you might want to try Sharpen, but I found that the Brightness/
Contrast works better. Then after you've done that you need to reduce the size of the image.
This can be done by going to Image Size and changing the width to either 1 or 2. I changed the
size of my tables to 2. You don't need to change the height, this will automatically be adjusted.
The image will look very small, but when you open it in Netscape it will be large and take up
most of the screen. Now all that's left is to save it. Go to the File menu and click on Save As.
Be sure to save it in GIF format.
