My reaction to being part of a cyber-community:

These reports could be read by anyone who surfs the Web. This is overwhelming to me because I've never had anything this accessible before. This is like writing an article and having it published. Except my homepage will be around much longer than the magazine that the article was published in will be. I'm not used to this because I'm used to having my reports read by the teacher only. With my homepage up anyone can read it, even my grandchildren. Being in a generational cyber-community in cyber-space is neat. Its also a little scary because everything is so accessible and just about anyone can read my page. Its also good because it will be preserved for future generations to read and maybe be able to use.

Cyber-communities:

To find out about cyber-space and cyber-communities I went to Dr. James's homepage and clicked on Cyber-Psychology. There was a lot of information there and I was able to find out exactly what cyber-psychology is. This is a study of people in cyber-space.

At first look at this site, it was a little overwhelming because there was so much information. As you read through it you become more familiar with the concept of virtual reality. People who use the web are communicating with others through the computer. I think that communicating online is so convenient. They are able to send e-mail to their friends and it will be received instantaneously, unlike the mail system which will take longer to be received. People are able to actually "talk" to others on the computer. They are typing their messages and the other person can see all their type o's. Some critics of the computer age may argue that the computer is impersonal because of the lack of physical human interaction. Although you do not see the person face to face you are still interacting with him or her.

In a cyber-community you are communicating with others who share the same interests as you. There may be thousands of people who are looking at the very same screen you are at this very moment. These people may be scattered all around the world.

The act of clicking creates virtual reality. This is something that is not physically present, but exists in your mind. This is an example of the dualism concept because it is not physically present, but still exists mentally. In order to experience virtual reality you need to have virtual presence. This is having access to a computer and the Web so that you can go online and experience cyber-space. You are not physically in cyber-space, but are mentally there. The computer provides the physical means of getting to cyber-space and your mind takes you into it. According to Dr. James, by clicking on a certain title you are committing a spiritual act. I agree because you are now in cyber-space and by clicking you are showing your interests which is a part of your mind. This is not something physical, but mental and spiritual. This will take you to another sub directory which will produce more information on your subject matter. It is taking you to another world. You are being enlightened by new information. By clicking on a certain title you are showing your interest in a specific subject matter which gives an insight into your personality and mind. It tells us a little about you. Your clicking patterns could one day be analyzed and interpreted to find your underlying personality.
