Frustration / Stress / Anxiety / Depression / Advice to Students / What I Learned from the Internet

There are many different stages during the process of learning through the internet. Among them include frustration, stress, anxiety, anger, depression, excitement, and others. Read below to find out how many other students dealt with these stages while taking Psychology 409 or Psy 459.

Are You Frustrated Yet?

How many of you out there experienced frustration while using the computer? I know what it's like going on a computer and it doesn't do what you want it to do. Before taking this course, I only knew about the internet and how to "surf" it. I experienced frustration when my links weren't working properly, and then when my icons wasn't loading up correctly. Read some of these reports and pages from other students explaining about their experiences with computers and this course!

"Everything that was discussed in class was completely foreign to me, I couldn't even begin to understand what the heck was going on, so I tried to compensate by taking accurate notes...Who was I trying to fool?" Kristie Hoe

Cy Yun from Generation 3 also stated, " While on the internet, it seemed pretty complicated, somewhat confusing, frustrating, and difficult to find particular topics and items, especially when there's no information given on the "how to do something" functions. I mean there were the help commands on the screen, but the wording is sometimes too darn complicated to understand."

Feeling A Trad Bit Stressed?

Don't Worry! You're Not Alone! Can you believe that even I got stressed from this class. I was up to the point, nah no need do the reports, got plenty time. Uh uh. So I wrote down who I was going to make links to, and then from there got stressed again, cause I had to figure out what I was going to write on this report. Click on these student pages to see what they experienced.

Cherish Higashi from Generation 3 tells us about her experiences with net search. "Upon entering Dr. Nahl's search index I clicked onto "Tribal Search", I thought, "Hey, this sounds interesting!" (because I had never used a search engine before I did not know what to expect) and I felt it was destined to become MY search engine, -- I couldn't have been more wrong. To my disappointment when I typed in a word to search I found that I could not conduct any kind of search using "Tribal Search" without some sort of code. Upon this discovery I had no choice but to choose another search engine. I then found "The Fabulous Shickman Pit Stop" and clicked it on."

Conrad Moreno's Report 2 and about his frustrations and stress from this course. "I must admit that I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of work that both of these generations had put into constructing all of their files. This was probably when I started to feel the first signs of anxiety. There I was all of a sudden, looking at a huge pile of work that lay ahead of me . How was I going to be able to succeed in both of these classes. It would seem hard enough just taking one class in a semester, but there I was taking both Internet classes. Normally an anxiety attack as huge as this would keep someone away from confront ing their problem, but it only motivated me."

Phuong Wataoka
If I couldn't find my topic in one search engine, then I can always jump on the next search engine. It will take me wherever I want to go. One disadvantage I can think when using the search engine is that it takes along time to get hook onto the server from home. I finally solve this problem by doing all my searching at school. I don't have to wait as long when I used the school computers.

Lori Morita has a great experience with the computers at the CLIC lab, along with the workers there. "At this point, I cannot really say how satisfied I am with the Internet itself. It would be a lie to say I am able to divorce my own feelings of frustration and inadequacy from the computer. So I can't give you an assessment of the computer and the Internet without realising those feelings as a major factor. Why wasn't the computer screen offering me more help? Why was everything so cryptic, all letters and no information? Why was the CLIC Lab staff so reluctant to give me information about the Internet systems? Why was the computer screen so damn small? All kinds of things rose up and growled."

Anxious Yet?

Many students, including myself, found it irritating when a homepage took forever to load up. Read some of these student s experiences with anxiety.

Ragna Borries said "First, Lycos showed me the Catalog of the Internet and when I asked for information on advertising it gave me a whole list of 17 options for specific information on different points of advertising. I clicked on advertisinglaw. However, it took so long to connect and in my impatience I began clicking all over the place. I did not pay attention to the display on the bottom of the page which showed me how many bytes of the full document had been received yet. In my despair I actually managed to freeze the screen."

Claudia Kaneshiro's attempts to discover ways to overcome different situations. "In the beginning, I had no clue that we would have to be using all of these commands just to write a paper. There is also no handout or literature on these special features we have come to know when typing out our paper. Boy I was ready to throw in the towel but I'm glad that I stuck it out and continued to learn the Web system."

Christine Huisman's adventures upon getting her unix account. "I hated computers and their jargon and suddenly I felt very anxious and scared. The terms on the paper were something like rm,mv,ls-al,cd,cp,dir,etc... By this time I was lost-so lost I thought I was going to drop the class. We were assigned to go and get a UHUNIX account if we didn't already have one and practice using the terms on the paper. Well, wouldn't you know I did have a UHUNIX account when I came to the new student transfer workshop but I never used it!!"

Depression...How to Overcome It

There are those times in our lives when we all get a little depressed. Some of us know what triggers our dperessed state, yet there are a few of us who don't know. Here are what a few students had to say about depression, how they overcame it, and how different emotions affected their lives.

Shane Akagi's feelings about being depressed while on the internet. "depression How do I fight depression? I just take a break from the typing that I am doing. When I first began doing emacs work I remembered becoming extremely agitated, as well as depressed with the work that I was doing, I began to mentally curse the instructor for giving us such a frustrating homework. Normally this is not the case for me, I guess under only extremely stressful situations I become like that. Normally, I find that I just sit back and try to put the situation into perspective. If I become really depressed, I find that a long hot shower does wonders for me. I usually find that after relaxing like that, I come back with even more creativity, and motivation to do better."

Berna Collado writes about the different moods when driving and the effects it has on people. "Personally, I agree with Caroline that one's emotional state does influence one's driving behavior (as well as with other behavior's in one's life). While on the road, I could just be driving until I hear a song that makes me feel a certain way."

Bryan Yucoco's experiences with driving and how he deal with all the stress and different moods from it. " "Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde" One thing that I notice is that I change moods when I am in the car. Usually I am not a very moody person but for some reason or another my moods go right off the scale. Mood depends on many things. I find that the music that I am listening to has a great effect on my mood. If the music is uplifting, no matter what worries I have or how many things that I need to get done, it doesn't phase me at all."

What I have Learned from the Internet

When I first used the internet, I did not know what to do or where to click. This was back in 1995, when my parents got a new computer. It wasn't until one night I decided to take a chance and "surf" the net. I found that you could search for anything and anyone on the net. By using the internet yellow pages, I was able to get the address from a friend from long ago. I also was able to do some research for one of my classes via the internet net search engines. I also learned from this semester that I am very impatient when it comes to waiting for pages to load up. That's one of the reasons why I took out some of the fancy stuff I had on this homepage.

I feel privileged to have the opportunity to learn the internet in a cyber-community as this. It gives the other students as well as myself achance to learn from each other and about each other. We also have the chance to learn how each of us would handle a different situation or problem on the computer. I feel it is very beneficial to be learning the internet through a cyber-community rather than tyring ot learn it on your own. Overall I learned that there is so much information that you can look up on the internet, and then realize that you have too little time to go through it all, thus making learning through a cyber-community allthe more worthwhile. Worthwhile becuase you can cover more ground that way, more people can look up information on the net foryou and help you find what you need. It's a great way to get things done and to learn when we all work together.

Some Advice For Future Students

First of all, don't put it off for a long time. Start surfing other student's homepages. Write down the addresses to the person's homepage-with a little sentence telling yourself why you chose it. By getting this done, it will be much easier to get your reports done on time. Second, be prepared whenever you're going to use the computer. Always have your notes and books handy. Also you shold give yourself a lot of time doing these reports, they can't be done in a day. Good luck and have fun!
