Advice for Future 499ers!!!
Should I Take Psy 499?
Yes, I would recommend taking Psy 499 because you will gain new skills and knowledge. The new skills you will learn are using a scanner and extend your knowledge of using html tags. Before taking this course, I never used a scanner before. But once I began to use it, I found it to be a very facinating tool. A scanner can be used to scan text and even images. Second, you can take this course for up to nine credits. Third, there is no class you need to attend every other day. You are working at your own pace. However, you do need to meet with Dr. James every two weeks to keep him updated on how you are doing.
What Do I Need?
1. Access to a scanner. There are scanners on UH campus at Porteus Lab on the third floor and there are scanners in the Keller computer lab.
2. OCR program. (Optical Character Recognition) I used Pagis Pro 97 by Xerox. This is used to scan text. I think this is an excellent program to use because you are able to save your files as html files. That means the html codes will be put in for you. Which makes editing much easier.
3. Ability to overcome your "technophobia."
4. Willingness to ask questions.
5. Time. Time is very important in Psy 499. You need to work many hours on scanning and making corrections. Do not procrastinate!
6. Meet with Dr. James every two weeks. This is very important! It is counted as part of your grade. Don't forget!
Scanning Tables
Sometimes in the papers you will be scanning, there are tables. These tables cannot be read by an text scanning (OCR) program.
You have two options:
1. Type in the table by hand (with HTML codes)
2. Scan in the table using an image scanning program.(Adobe Photoshop 4.0)
I personally used a image scanning program to scan the tables. The program that I used was Adobe Photoshop 4.0. I found this to be much easier. However, remember when you save it, reduce the size of the image. I reduced my images to about 1 inch x 1 inch or sometimes 2 in. By 2 in.
