Generation 1 Generation 2 Generation 3 Generation 3A A Sense of Importance Cyberspace: Another Dimension |
For the beginner who needs help on operating emacs, html, etc., check out this home page for helpful links. The setup of the page was organized in a sufficient manner, with links having small descriptions. His use of the class picture as a means of decorating his page was eye-catching for me, because like most people I like to look at pictures of people.
Beverly says,ALOHA! with a couple of alternate home pages that she has created and some interesting links to some search engines, Calvin and Hobbes comics gallery, and Nutrition and Fitness. This is an interesting home page with a lot choices for surfing. It caught my eye because of the blinking Aloha and the setup was more organized than the other homepages of her generation. Her links were all lined up in a horizontal fashion with brief a synopsis for each.
Are you a sports fan?? Well, I am a big-time sports junkie and Kyle Fujii has the greatest link available, ESPN SportZone and a link to my favorite basketball team, the Los Angeles Lakers!!! I have to be honest, these were the only reasons why I made a link to this homepage. His use of images next to his links were appropriate and gave color to his page.

Beer, beer, and more beer . . . check this page out if you love your beer and the nba!! It doesn't have a complicated organization and the background design is not too distracting, but just right. The content of his reports are well done and gives good insight on his experiences with the internet, ftp, pine, and so on. He also provides a variety of links for the surfer who wants to explore things for entertainment purposes.

PAGE OF CRISTINA KEALOHA
Awesome organization, engaging links, and a complete guide to background colors for the creation of your pages. This page also caught my eye because it was different and very simple. There were no words of explanation, only links that were set up in a table style. The background color was good and the icons for the links added spice to the page.
The world of Disney can be at the tip of your fingers, just click, click, click. Another page that is set up in the table like fashion with few words of explanation. There are only three main links to her index, group reports, and her own reports. I liked the way she used the images as her links, so that there were no small print, highlighted, underlined phrases. I wonder how she got those images as her links.

PAGE OF CALVIN CHEUNG
An outstanding home page! The set up can give one good ideas on constructing tables to organize links. I also liked his page because it he uses the theme of Calvin and Hobbes as his decoration. The mixture of images between tables and as icons next to links makes it more appealing. His theme of Calvin and Hobbes is also quite witty because his name is Calvin too!

Do you want to be entertained? Do you like to look for background designs? If you do, check this page out, and you will be there for a long time!! I liked this page from the start because the big happy face just seems to emanate the same happiness to me. The black background really brought out the color in the text and the images. The icons next to his links were very well done because they related well to the topic of his links. For example, the picture of the professor next to Dr. James' link.

For stress relief, check this page out and see the spiritual experiences one can achieve through meditating and reflecting. The background for his page is awesome because it relates very well to his topic of meditation. I felt like I was floating into the sky and it gave me a sense of relaxation, already!!

Learn how to use the web search engine, Lycos. You can also learn more about the generational curriculum in traffic psychology. Its design also makes you feel like you are in Hawaii. The nice beach scene and the soothing blue background give it that effect. His "who am I" section was innovative and it helped to personalize the page, by giving some information about himself to the viewer.

PAGE OF CHRISTY FORSYTHE
She has a great article on driving personality makeover, what it is, how to do it, and why we should do it. The page layout is very simple and that was what appealed to me. She also personalizes her page by telling the viewer a little bit about her plans after college. She even goes further by showing a cute picture of her little baby boy.

PAGE OF ANTHONY CHUNG
This was a really great home page with an insightful discussion on traffic psychology and web search engines. It had a lot of good images, too bad his images were linked relatively and lost its connections. Nevertheless, the content is still worth reading. I also picked this page because I was a part of generation 3a and Anthony was an inspiration for me. He led the way in constructing our pages and I tried to follow his lead as best as I could.
Wow! It amazes me how I have been given the opportunity to be an integral part of the educational process in the curriculum of a psychology course at a major university. By being a part of the generational curriculum in cyberpsychology, I am allowed to be an active member in the text that is presented to future generations. In essence, I am taking on the responsibility of being an author, whose work is published for future generations to learn from.
Lets put this responsibility into perspective by using a quote from a highly-respected intellectual, David Thoreau. He claims that books (or publications) can make a difference in the world. He once wrote:
No wonder that Alexander carried the Iliad with him on his expeditions in a precious casket. A written word is the choicest of relics. It is something at once more intimate with us and more universal than any other work of art. It is the work of art nearest to life itself. It may be translated into every language, and not only be read but actually breathed from all human lips . . . Books are the treasured wealth of the world and the fit inheritance of generations and nations . . . Their authors are a natural and irresistible aristocracy in every society, and, more than kings and emperors, exert an influence on mankind . . . How many a man has dated a new era in his life from the reading of a book.
This is some heavy stuff for a young undergraduate, no wonder I'm stressed out! Fortunately, I am not alone, because my fellow students in my generation also carry the responsibility of educating the future. Together we have created a cybercommunity, which is held together by the links that we create to one another. The power of links, not only allow us to interact with each other, but also provides us with the opportunity to interact with previous generations.
Although, I do not know many of the people from past generations in a physical sense, I am able to know them through the ideas and experiences they published in the generational curriculum. Access to the minds of these students, allows for a much larger diversity of viewpoints, which enhances the learning process. As a generational curriculum we have access to material posted by a professional such as Dr. James, and others who can be found through search engines. The ideas published by these qualified men and women give us the textbook knowledge we normally get in a regular course. However, it is the relationships that are built through the minds of our peers that provide the motivation and desire to gain more knowledge. The relationships of minds among the generational curriculum will continue to grow as the years progress, and the boundaries of this learning process is endless. I am proud and humbled to be a part of this process.
What is cyberspace? Why do I need to know what it is? To understand the internet and the mass communication it produces, one should first attempt to understand the community they are involved in. Community? What community? We are a part of the cybercommunity (cyber means computer), which means we are a computer community) on the internet. Whether we are surfing through the net, writing on e-mail, or talking on a chat group, we are communicating and interacting with other people. Although we may not physically be involved in the interactions, we are involved with our minds. As Dr. James says, "when we use computers we are having an exchange with other humans, through the machine, not with the machine." Many people often make the mistake of assuming that working on a computer is an introverted behavior. In fact, it is an extroverted behavior, because one is communicating with other people by expressing their own ideas and receiving other people's ideas. The internet also gives one access to communicating with people all over the world, which would be impossible through the physical world. Therefore, relationships can be built through the interaction of minds, and it is this interaction that makes the internet a cybercommunity.
Dr. James writes an excellent article on the concept of cyberspace, and he explains it by putting it in the category of virtual reality. He explains that virtual reality is not within the limitations of the physical world, but is in virtual space, which has no form or mass. The mind is also in this virtual space according to Dr. James. Because our minds are exclusively involved in a cybercommunity, and our minds are in virtual space, the cyberspace we create is a virtual reality. Dr. James explains,"Cyberspace is a virtual reality that facilitates communication and encourages the formation of real communities." Feel proud to be a part of a world-wide community and a contributor to the never ending expansion of virtual space.
Are you still confused? Don't worry, I'm still confused myself. The concept of cyberspace is not an easy thing to learn. There are so many principles to examine and my little explanation barely touches the tip of the iceberg. However, one of the advantages of cyberspace is the easy accessibility of information and the diversity of opinions of thousands of other people. Dr. John Suler provides his professional view of cyberspace by examining issues that cyberspace is beginning to encounter. There also various opinions among my classmates who have created a FAQ file on cyber-psychology and cyberspace. You can also check out my FAQ file. Another way to get more information about cyberspace is by clicking on the "net search" button and using a search engine. It is kind of like using a library catalog database. For more information on search engines and how to use them, you can look at my report 3. If you are still confused after all this, don't worry! Just remember that learning and success is not a destination but a never-ending process.
