Psychology Is Social

"In your lifetime, you will come into contact with only a small fraction of the world's several billion people. The rest you will never meet...Three levels of relations may develop between two persons: (a) a unilateral awareness (knowledge of existence but no interaction); (b) bilateral surface contact (some interaction); or (c) a mutual relationship, where two persons respond to each other... At the third level, the two individuals have some past joint experience and future anticipation... Level 3 is conceived as a continuum...its ultimate relization is the total interpenetration of two human beings, as defined by their joint attitudes, joint behavior, and joint behavior" (G. Levinger, "A 3 Level Approach To Attraction").

Spiritual Self Marriage is for life. Two should be fully joined physically, mentally, and spiritually. God is #1 in the relationship but each other second. Should be joined in God's love not just physical attraction. I believe that God knows my need and if I am patient, He will supply the right woman for me. I will follow God's direction, not peer pressure. I believe when I am ready, I will have the peace & joy about it. I will be ready to fully give of myself to my family.
Reflective Self When I marry, I want to be fairly financially stable, and mentally prepared to enter marriage fully committed. I want a prosperous, loving, caring marriage with God in it. Raising a family is a lot of reponsibility both mentally, physically, and especially financially. I am not ready to raise children (which are inevitable in marriage.) I would be unhappy and burdened down with children right now.
Automatic Self I know that right now I am too selfish to committ myself to one person. I want to do what I want to do, when I want to do it. I am not ready to fully share joint attitudes, joint behaviors, and especially joint property. In marriage, you have to share willingly. Although I am 23 and I love my girlfriend, I am not ready to get married yet.
