Print vs. Web Publishing

Web publishing is a new and innovative way to get information, through a computer, to an infinite number of people in a quick and easy way. Print publishing are documents available in print form. For example, books, newspapers, and other documents. Many people are looking into web publishing versus print publishing. There are many advantages to Web publishing. Such advantages include cost, availability, and time involved in web publishing versus print publishing.

In print publishing, after the document is completed, it must be sent to a publishing company and then copies must be made, then distributed to stores where your document can be sold to consumers. This not only is costly for you, but also for anyone who wants to read your document. With Web publishing, your document just needs to be uploaded once and it will be available 24 hours a day to anyo ne who has access to the Internet through various web browsers.

With print publishing, your document would be available only to places you would have it shipped to. And once your document is printed and distributed, any changes that you would need to make would be impossible. Because Web publishing gives you unlimit ed access to your document, changes and editions would be much easier. Your document, if displayed on the Internet, would be available to people all over the world.

The time involved to do each differ. The time it would take to do print publishing is time consuming with the amount of printing involved. With Web publishing, only one copy is required, so printing time is eliminated. With correct planning, and a team of skilled workers, a document done on the web can go a long way.

There are also many interactive capabilities out there that are available through the web. Such things included an interactive shopping mall where you are able to purchase as well as review items from different companies. There is also a popularity among different programs that allow you to interact with other people from all over the world. Another interactive capability is a program called CU-SeeMe where one user can interact with another user through both video and audio on the computer screen. So, reach out and touch someone, if you can!

SKILLS?????

If publishing a web page for personal use, just knowledge of computer processing and hypertext language is necessary and can be obtained through books or even through the web. There are also HTML tutorials available to anyone interested in constructing a web site.

In order to publish a large scale web site, a team of four, skillful individuals is necessary to make your page worthwhile. These members are as follows:

  • Computer Programmer
Someone with knowledge about HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and who knows his way around the computer to fix any problems that may occur between typing up the page and displaying it on your web site.

  • Visual Designer and User Interface Designer
This person would be responsible for designing the web page so that appropriate icons will be displayed in an organizational manner. This is basically the fashion designer of a web site.

  • Editor and Writer
The editor and writer of the web site is responsible for the actual text to be displayed. They will be responsible for writing out the information and making sure that there are no grammatical mistakes and everything is formatted correctly.

  • Marketer
The marketer comes in when you want to make your site known to the Cybernauts out there. He or she should know how to capture an audience's attention. He will have to think of ways your page would be useful to the consumer or viewer.

In addition to these skills, having a mutual respect for each other is very necessary for a well-organized and cooperative design team.

    BROWSERS

Now that you have a published web page, there are different ways people can view it. These are through various browsers. Depending on what type of browser is used, various options could be added into your page.

One of the most popular browsers is Netscape. Netscape allows a viewer to see the different text styles and fonts that you may have included in your page. Netscape also displays graphics and pictures you put on your homepage. It is kind of an ornamental way of viewing someone's homepage.

Another browser available on the market is Microsoft Internet Explorer. This is quite similar to Netscape, although for those people who are not university studensts, it is free to download through the Internet. It also has different features available, besides being able to view graphics and different font styles. One of them is that if you design a web page using the Internet Explorer, one thing that you could include is background music for your page.

The last browser is called Lynx. It is a software that is available on the market and also can be easily accessed through an Internet account. This type of browser is basically text based. Images are listed as images and can be viewed only if you download it to your computer. It is basic ally the black and white version of your homepage.

    YVETTE IN CYBERSPACE?

If I had a chance to construct a homepage of my own I think I'd include personal, not TOO personal, information about me and include some links to pages that I find interesting. In fact, I DID construct a little homepage for myself way before I took this course. Since I did not know too much about HTML, it's not too fancy. It was just my way of introducing myself to different people all over the world. Viewers will come across a few little known facts about me like where I attend school, what my music interests are, and where I am originally from. Having that homepage allowed people to see what my interests were and if they shared the same interests, they often sent me some e-mail through the navigational button I have at the bottom of my page. If y ou would like to take a look, follow ME. Oh, don't be confused. This page was set up through a Multi-Object Oriented (MOO) enhanced network where people log on as different characters although so me people use their real names. I was not one of those people, so don't think you're on a wrong page. As soon as I have more time, I'll probably fix up that home on the net.

    I HAVE FRIENDS!

I know you're thinking, "Big deal!" Well, since I got your attention, you can take a look at some of the homepages that I find interesting. They just happen to be constructed by my friends.

  • O'Dell Hutchison is a friend of mine that I met while on exchange at Oregon State. He recently found out how to construct a Personal Homepage and I think he did an excellent job. His page provides information about himself and has various links to interesting pages. He also includes links to pictures as well. He keeps changing his page, but it's been getting better each time. Each time I visit his page, I find something new. I know it lacks consistency, but it's not taking away any old information, it's just setting up a new format. I can tell, by each improvement, that he's learning more and more about the web. I was able to browse through his page without getting lost since he provided proper navigational buttons, like links back to his homepage, on each of his second ary pages. When I last visited there, I saw that the background did not overpower his text and his home page, as well as his other pages, were very well organized.

  • Jim also has an interesting page that makes use of an unusual background and not only provides information about himself, but also links to several pages. It was very clear what was contained on his page and like O'Dell, he did not just throw everything on to one page. He divided all the information he wanted into different secondary pages that were easily accessible. I also did not get lost here since he, too, provided the necessary navigational buttons. I found it very entertaining because this guy is very imaginative and alth ough some don't, I find it funny. Warning: He has a weird sense of humor. Well, for some of you, it's a warning, to others, it's not. Judge for yourself and enjoy.
