WHAT'S ON THE WEB?
Types of Homepages in Cyberspace
The Web allows you access to various pages constructed by different people. They can be from businesses, big networks, and even regular people like you and, well, maybe me. The Web links the world to lots and lots of information and this information can
be accessed through pages like Yahoo. You can search by entering specific names or by a list of categories.
Some of these categories include:
- INFORMATION ORIENTED
- CNN has a Web page that can be accessed. This page, like the TV network provides you with links to current events of the world, giving you updated information all the time. I know where to go when I want informat
ion about different current events that happen throughout the world. I think this page is information central.
- Another web site that gives you information about sports and such is the ESPN homepage. Need to know updated scores of various games? Here's the place to go. I never realized there was so much to know about
sports. If I was really into sports that much, this is where I'd stop by if I wanted to know updated information about my favorite teams.
- RESEARCH & EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS
- Since the web has become popular, many schools are using it to get their students involved with technology. There are two local examples. One is, of course, the page that this link originates from. Leon James has allowed his students to gain ex
perience on the Internet by having them generate homepages. The different generations can be viewed through this page. Students' reports are also accessible through this page. By ex
ploring the different generations, you can see the different things each generation knew about and how much progress the Internet has made since the first generation.
- Another page that I found interesting was my alma mater's home page, Kapa'a High School. This is a small school located on the island of Kaua'i and has various links to a lot of things. This page is still being
worked on, but I think the job so far has been excellent considering that when I was in high school, we never even knew about the Internet.
- ENTERTAINMENT
- A lot of people look into the Internet for updates on popular television programs, movies, sports, and other forms of entertainment. One page of such a category is the page of NBC, a popular broadcasting station
. Their page gives you access to different programs on NBC whether it be soap operas, situation comedies, or even the news. Another feature of this page is a chat room that features different guest stars. I think it was great to find a page that allows
you to participate interactively as well as being able to find out information about this broadcasting company.
- ESPN, a well renowned sports channel, also constructed a homepage for all those sports fanatics with Internet access. This page gives you information about different sports as well as updated scores of the
events. A well organized page that allowed me access to tons and tons of information about sports. Gives you up to date information about scores, picks, and different games being held.
- MARKET COMMUNICATIONS
- Some companies use the web to promote their products and allow people to access information about the products. One company that uses the web to advertise is Sprint communications. It is a good way for a consu
mer to find out some benefits about hooking up phone services with Sprint and also different telecommunication options offered through Sprint. Before coming across this page, I thought Sprint was only a long distance carrier. They provide a lot of good
information about their company.
- Another page is from Netscape. They provide accurate information about their software. The good thing is that since this software came about, they are able to offer updated versions of the software on their page
. I was impressed by the information presented on this page.
- RETAIL BUSINESS & SALES
- Need to do a little shopping? Why not do it on the Internet? By
searching through different Search Engines, you can find out different sites that allow you to do some purchasing of different products. Hey, you may even find free stuff. One such interactive shopping "network" is the interactive mall. This site has links to different products available through this mall for purchasing. I can't believe we've gone from walking to the mall, to shopping from your own home through the television and now t
hrough the Internet. This is a good way of beating the hustle and bustle of the malls.
- I found another page that you can purchase Compact Discs or videotapes from by setting up an account with the company. The company, CDnow, allows you to search through their list of available CD's in an effective w
ay for your favorite artists and possibly purchase them if you want through a telnet connection. It's an easy and quick way to get exactly what you're looking for without leaving your home. Another convenient option of shopping if you're not into fighti
ng crowds or searching through shelves and shelves of Compact Discs.
ELECTRONIC PUBLICATIONS
In Report 1 I discussed the different advantages to Web publishing vs. print publishing. Some magazines and journals have made their publications available on the web.
MAGAZINES
- Sports Illustrated (sorry, not
the swimsuit issue)--Everything you wanted to find out about sports and more.
- Time Life magazine--Yes, this popular magazine on current events is available on the net.
JOURNALS
- Journal of Abnormal Psychology--Journal of articles on studies done in the field of Abnormal Psychology. Great for research papers!
NEWSPAPERS
- Honolulu Star Bulletin--One of our local papers made it on the web!
These are few examples of the electronic versions of publications also available in print. If you are searching for a particular article, it would be easier to search through the web, assuming that the downloading time won't take as long as it takes to w
alk down to the store and get a magazine or paper yourself. It is very convenient since each page opens up with a table of contents that allows you to skip things that don't interest you and lets you go straight to the articles of interest. If you are w
orking on a research paper, it is much easier to copy the information you want by using the copy and paste commands. These are a few advantages of having the electronic version of a magazine or journal or newspaper. However, some disadvantages may be t
he different things available through print publishing, but not available in the electronic version. Not all parts of the Honolulu Star Bulletin is available in the electronic version. Also, in the magazines, they do not have the different ads that seem
to appeal to different individuals. Also, if you wish to make a collage from a magazine, you can't really cut out the different word styles from the electronic version. Also, some of these electronic versions don't provide photos that are available in
the print version.
As I was searching for these different electronic publications, I was amazed to find so many different magazines and newspapers. I was truly amazed that even the Honolulu Star Bulletin was available. I thought that
was a big step in technology. However, I was disappointed that this LONG list of publications lacked some of the other magazines and newspapers that I enjoy reading. I guess not everyone has got the "Internet fever" or they are just computer phobic. A
s I was looking at the Honolulu Star Bulletin's homepage, I found the articles available easily accessible. Navigation was easy and I did not get lost (a definite plus in my book). However, I noticed that some sections of the newspaper were missing. Ev
en the magazines were easy to follow, also providing proper navigational buttons. I thought that boy, this would be so much easier than going to the library, searching the computer for newspapers or other research articles, searching for the book, then X
eroxing the article for $0.10 a page. If I find an article over the web, I can just call it up, send it to the printer and voila!, I saved myself a lot of time and even money (another plus!). While doing research, even if I didn't have access to a print
er right when I found the article on the Web, I would still be able to save it or download it to a disk and with a click of a button, just bring it up. I may not even need to print this article out either! Just highlight a section that I would want to q
uote and copy, then paste it into my paper as I work on it at the computer. No more stacks of papers to carry around, and no more searching again and again for that one section that I came across once, but forgot to highlight. This would make research w
ork much, much easier.
However, I was thinking about this leisure reading that I like to do while waiting in a doctor's office, or at the airport, or for the next bus to take me home. I would rather have the magazine to flip through than have to read printed text from the Web.
That would be my only option since I wouldn't actually be able to lug around a computer, plug it in anywhere, and then look for my favorite magazine. Every time I read a magazine, I tend to look at pictures, that's what attracts me the most. With a co
mputer print out, I may not have that option. Also, as I looked through those different electronic publications, I discovered that they took away the ads that I find interesting. I thought that if I were to read something just for fun, I would rather ha
ve the print version than the electronic version since it would be a bit more "colorful." But, if I am just looking for something in particular, like an article on a certain topic, I would prefer going on the Internet and doing a quick search.
