My Journey Through Cyberspace
The first time I decided to browse the internet was the result of my
annoying curiosity. I am the kind of person who likes to know everything
about what I am interested in. When I first found out about the internet
I jumped on the bandwagon. At first I thought that this was so
outrageous that you could send mail to anybody in the world in less than
a second, and no postage too! It was not until I took this class from
Dr. James, that I understood the vast complexity and psychological impact
this cyber-environment implements upon us.
The internet is a virtual environment where many come to browse, chat,
shop, play, and do many things that one may alternatively do in the
outside world. This virtual environment allows us to not only exist in
an anonymous place, it also offers the opportunity to be a totally
anonymous person. I mentioned that people come to the internet to play,
and by this I mean boardgames, dating games, and even "Dungeons and
Dragons" simulated games, otherwise known as MUD's.
Since there are so many different things to do on the internet, you may
ask, "How do I know where to start?" This statement brings up a whole
new experience for many who are new to this environment. This new
experience can take you to wherever you wish to travel, with the simple
click of the mouse. "So all I have to do is click?" you ask, and I say
yes, just click wherever you see the pointed finger on the screen and
you'll be in a whole new world! (See Dr. James's "Clicking is a spiritual act")
For those of you who are wondering if Cyber Psychology is a new thing,
then you've got to spend more time on the computer! I did a search on
"cyber psychology" and I was surprised at what I found, I ended up with
more than 400,000 results! I found things about mental health, a place
called the "FreudNet", and
even little
psychology games! So if this is
one of your few experiences on the net with psychology, then I recommend
that you do a search
for yourself, and check out the revoluntionary field of cyber
psychology!
