The Concept of Web Publishing

The Difference Between Print and Web Publishing

As the world wide web came into existence, Web publishing was developed. This invention has made print publishing practically obsolete. Clearly, Web publishing has many more advantages over print publishing. The first and most apparent advantage is te ability to display timely and updated information. Web publishing allows one to update information in a matter of seconds. Other forms of non-Web publishing (books, magazines, CD-ROM's), take much time to manufacture, ship and deliver to the customer. Updating print publishing requires the same tedious process. By the time a print publishing reaches a customer, the information could be by far outdated.

Another obvious advantage of Web-publishing is the nature upon which it is distributed. Through the Internet, Web-publishing is available throughout the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and to an unlimited amount of consumers. Print publishing may be limited to a few copies per bookstores, or may be found in select libraries.

In addition, Web publishing offer interactive capabilities. This allows one to link to pages that are related to the topic. An example of this interactive capability are Yahoo and Infoseek. These two locations are search engines. They allow one to interact in finding a particular topic.

The author of a Web-publishing has little overhead expense, as all of the tools, besides the computer, are provided by the Internet. Besides that, one's design presentation of their Web publishing is infinite, in that there is no limit to the designing capabilities of the Internet. Best of all, Web-publishings are not bound to deteriorate over long periods of time.

Skills Needed to Publish Web Sites

First of all, to publish a Web site, one has to have some knowledge about the internet. Secondly, one has to have a basic idea of HTML programming skills. HTML programming is used to display everything you see on a page; tables, backgrounds, icons, graphics, links, frames, and the color and size of fonts, etc. Extensive knowledge in this category will allow one to create picture perfect sites. Visual graphics is very important in creating a web site. It is the key in making a good impression for people who visit the web site. A visual designer is helpful, but not required. Throughout the Internet there are free designs and graphics that are available to the "simple" publisher. Dominic's Web Tool Page is very helpful in creating a web site. This site contains links to HTML guides and HTML editors. Besides that, it links to sites containing graphics, backgrounds, icons, animated gifs, counters, Java script and GCI scripts. This page has everything you need to construct an excellent web site. It even has a link to a site that offers free web pages. Lastly, a writer and editor is needed to publish a web site. These two "jobs" only require a competent person who knows how to express him or her self. To do this, one has to have good communication skills. They have to be able to control the content of the site, in order to attract the audience they want. Another thing is that they need to have good grammer skills, and be able to make their ideas flow. This makes the site appear professional.

Comparison of Three Browsers

VS. VS. LYNX

A specific browser (eg. Netscape), is a program which basically aids one in accessing the Internet. It is like that window you look through to see world wide web. It also helps significantly to guide one through the extensive world wide web. As browsers develop, they support more technological advances. For example, Netscape 1.0 can't support multi frames and java script like Netscape 2.02 can.

Three browsers, Netscape 2.02, Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1, and Lynx, were accessed and compared to each other. I noticed that Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer were very similar to each other, while Lynx could be considered the "odd ball". Both Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer were very user friendly, but I would give the advantage to Netscape in this category. The controls on Netscape were more elaborate and easier to access. My version of Microsoft Internet Explorer(2.1) appeared to be significantly slower, in terms of downloading and searching, than my version of Netscape(2.02). In addition, some sites looked different when viewed in Mircsoft Internet Explorer. Some sites extended beyond the screen, while it did not when viewed in Netscape. Another thing is that the colors of a site appear differently when viewed in Microsoft Internet Explorer, than in Netscape. I did not really care for the browser Lynx. Although it could connect to many Internet sites, it was not even half as appealing as the other two browsers, as it lacked color and graphics. These two aspect of the Internet are the most intriguing, as images make sites exciting. Other difference between Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer lie in programming ability. Java script is unique to Netscape, while Active X is unique to Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Reasons for Constructing a Home Page

It is quite obvious why corporations, companies, educational institutions, organizations and stores publish Web pages. Many times it is used for promotional purposes, for sales, and for recruitment. Personal pages, on the other hand, are used for a personal reason of a particular person.

If I had a chance to construct a personal home page on my own time, I would use it to express myself. It is sort of like comparing it to decorating one's home or even one's yard. Much pride would be emphasized on the page, as it becomes a part of myself. I would probobly dedicate it to one of my many interests; Camaros, stereos, or billiards. And if my site became popular, I might use it to make money through advertising. The way that this works, is that either people or companies pay me money to display their banner on my home page. People visit my page, and people see the banners. The companes of the posted banner is now more prone to recieving more bussiness.

I also noticed that some people use their personal pages to initiate friendships. Often, these sites contain a picture of themselves. Usually included are descriptions of themselves, interests and their e-mail adress. Lastly, they often initiate the friendship, by posting that they are seeking friends. Other people use their web sites to promote themselves. They may post their resume like Kathy Czopek of St. Louis Missouri.

Most importantly, I would use a home page to extend the knowledge contained on the world wide web. Contributing so that another may benefit from the knowledge that I have earned. This idea is like this site that I am currently working on. To this date, I have found two personal home pages that have sparked some interest in me. The first is the f-body page. This site is dedicated to f-body cars such as Camaros and Firebirds. I enjoyed this site, because it offers many pictures and much information about my favorite car; the Camaro. In addition, this site is linked to many other sites that have the same interest in f-body cars, ranging from personal pages, to organizations, to auto part shops. The second personal home page I enjoyed is Corral. Ironically, this page is dedicated to the rival of the f-bodied cars, the Ford Mustang. This site is interesting to me, because it includes tech tips, and problem solving information about Mustangs. Best of all, there are some really cool pictures and links. These two sites were quite organized. I had an easy time navigating through these sites.
