REPORT TWO

Subjects on the Web

Web Categories

On the internet, five major categories seem to exist; information oriented services, research and education, entertainment, marketing communications and retail business. Information oriented services include newspapers and information provider services such as Starbulletin and CNN News. Instead of searching through the paper, or watching the entire half hour of news, I found it more convenient in viewing the net versions. I could select all of the articles that interest me, and skip ones that don't.

The next category I investigated was research and education. This category includes elementary through college education and research institutions. Two sites that I found under this category were: I was surprised to find a location where one can actually enroll in college classes online. But, I thought that the courses offered in these types of locations are limited. At most, fifteen courses are offered at these online college locations. Not to worry, I saw the news the other day, concerning the Internet and education. At a convention, there were discussions about other schools becoming involved with online education. A greater selection of courses are sure to follow.

Another category on the Internet is entertainment. This category includes all of the leisure sites such as sports and games. One of the sport sites that I have found is called ESPN Sportzone. At this site, one could find out the latest scores and upcoming events in each sport. In addition, this site contains interesting articles about various sports. Other entertaining sites on the Internet includes interactive game sites. One could even play Blackjack with other people through their computer.

A very popular category on the Internet is marketing communications. These sites include advertising, product information, and services. An example of product information site is Lingenfelter Engineering. Since I have an interest in fast american cars, I thought that it was cool to be able to see the different modification packages that they offered. Prices and specifications were offered for all of their services. This type of sites is especially useful when one wants to know if certain products exist and what the retail price is. Another example of marketing communications is online banking at Bank of America. I am a customer of Bank of America, but I was unaware of this service until recently. Anyone with an account here can make payments and afw transactions without leaving home.

The last category is retail business and sales. These sites include online stores, like CD Universe, and malls such as Ghirardelli Square. Visiting these sites were quite fascinating, as actual products could be bought with the click of a button. Some of these sites even offer an online shopping basket, in which one could put their item in. After shopping, items in the "basket" can be bought or discarded. It was also cool, in that one could purchase items throughout the net that was exclusively sold in other states. I thought that it was faster to search for a product on the Internet than at a real store, especially when looking for CD's. It seems as if "physical" malls will soon be obsolete.

Differences Between E-zines and Magazines

Surfing on the Internet, I was able to examine some e-zines. I was interested to see the e-zine counterpart of the magazines I subscribe physically through the mail. So I searched on the Internet and found:
To my surprise, the e-zines and physical magzines were practically identical. The pictures were the same, and the journal writing was exactly the same, word for word. The only difference is that a magazine article only requires one web page; compared to multiple pages on a physical magazine. I really enjoyed the electronic versions as it was easy to search for any article. Just point and click. Another advantage of the electronic versions is that they do not deteriorate and bend like real magazines do. In addition, one does not have to wait for the magazine to be mailed to them. Just wait till the release date of the magazine, and "poof!", there it is on your computer. What I also liked about e-zines is that it does not consume paper. In other words, it helps to save the environment. Best of all, e-zines do not come with all of the traditional inserts of a magazine. Disadvantages of e-zines include not having the opportunity to view the pictures in detailed form. The photographs in my magazine were considerably sharper than those found on the Internet. Another disadvantage, is not being able to read the e-zine while on the throne.
