The Internet is like a highway, because one
travels through the world wide web, as one travels on a highway, stopping
at various locations. Instead of using a car, one uses a link to travel
from one place on the Internet to another. I guess you could compare a
connection to the Internet, to the engine of a car, as it determines the
speed on which you travel throught the Internet. A 14.4 (14,400bps) modem is
like a standard four
cylinder engine. A 28.8 (28,800bps) modem is like a standard 6 cylinder
engine. T1 connections (1.5mbps) is like a standard V8, while a T3
connection (4.5mbps) is like the V8 in a Camaro. Cable lines (10mbps)
are like the V12, 450 horse power engine in a Lamborgini Diablo. The
faster the connection, the faster one could upload and download items
from the Internet. The
mouse of a computer is like a steering wheel in a car. It steers a person
in the direction choosen. The time spent of the modem is like gas. In
most cases, the more time you spend of the modem, the more money you
spend. Lastly, the ablility to navigate through the Internet is like
one's driving skill for a car. The better you become, the farther you
travel. The Internet is considered a "superhighway", because instead of
traveling within a country, one travels throughout the world. Lastly,
there are "road signs" within a browser that aid one in the
right direction to a destination.

The
Internet is like driving this Mustang, but much faster!
Operation of the Web
Links are most important in
creating an organized Web page. Instead of cluttering all of
the information on one page, a link allows one to connect to a new page
where related information can be stored. Web publishing is like a book,
where the home page is like a table of contents, and the link is like your
hand turning to the following pages. Links should be used with
discretion, as too many links may cause confusion. In addition, links on a
Web page should be organized in a manner so that one is able to quickly
and clearly see the pattern. Examples of organizations may be
alphabetically, chronologically, or by subjects. This way one would have no
problem searching for the right link to press. Two organized sites that I
have found are:
- Lycos-a search engine
- Who Where-a "search engine" for e-mail
adresses, personal home pages, actual adresses and phone numbers,
companies and yellow pages
Two disorganized sites that I found were:
A clearly organized web page allows one to quickly locate what he or
she is looking for. The first two sites were very organized, in that I
could quickly
find what I was looking for. Lycos included an index that was organized
alphabetically. Looking for a particular topic? No problem. Just type
in the subject in the blank, or choose one of the broad subjects given.
At Who Where, I had a very pleasant experience. When I was searching for
a personal home page, I could choose from different sub-categories;
university, celeberty, bussiness, etc. From there, I was given a screen
with places to select from; Asia, Africa, Europe, United States, etc.
After that, I was given a screen with the 26 alphabets. If I was
searching for Cheri Okazaki, I would click on the letter "O". At any
time, I could use their other services (e-mail adress search, adress and
phone number search, company search, or yellow pages), without using the
back button. Every page contained buttons that linked to those various
sites, like a template.
First of all, when I tried to look at Blaine's Home Page, it
took about half a lifetime to load. When it finally loaded, I did not
understand the purpose of the page. There were many colorful pictures, a
counter, and some links. But, that's it. Everthing seemed to be
bunched together with no organization. I noticed
that many personal home pages are like this, because most people create
homepages for fun. Therefore, they don't have to have a professional
appearance. But, I think that appearance and navagation through any
site is important. It creates an impression on the visitor, and
determines whether or not the site will be revisited. Although an index was
present in the second disorganized site, there
was no clear pattern of organization. Even when I linked to a subject I
was looking for, I became lost. It seemed like this site just contained
a bunch of links. In fact there were too many links. This site
seemed very cluttered. I wasted much valuble time searching on this web
sites.
