How the Web Operates

The Information Superhighway

We have all heard of the "information superhighway", but what does that really mean? Why do they call it that? We refer to the internet as a highway because in many ways it is much like a highway. A highway allows you to get from one place to another, usually faster than streets. The internet allows you to search different areas of interest a lot faster than you could in a library. On a highway you always know where you are, because of signs and mile markers. The internet also lets you know where you are by giving the address of the sight you are visiting. Highways have onramps and offramps, allowing you to get off and on. The internet has a forward, back, and home button that gets you off and on of different sights. A highway sometimes has traffic which may slow you down, just like the traffic on the internet. As you can see there are many similarities between a highway and the internet. By adding the word super to highway it shows that the internet is by far superior to a highway.

Navigating the Web Through Links

Navigating the Web through links is a very easy process. Just clicking on the highlighted words opens up a new page to view. The links on a page should be clear and well organized. The links should tell the reader what the next link contains or at l east give them a hint. The most frustrating thing about links is when you link to something that has nothing to do with the previous link, especially if it took a while to get to the next link!

Different Styles of Sites

There are many different styles some are excellent while others are very confusing. I linked to two well organized sites
Astronomy 110 and Cyberpsychology. These sites were very clear and the links had information pertaining to the subject matter. The sites MADD and Del's homepage showed very little preparation time in organizing the page. Mothers against drunk driving was very confusing and needed organizational work. Del's home page was very bland and had links to various information that had nothing to do with her topics.
