The Internet is often a difficult place to navigate. Without some sort of guidance or help, one could easily find themselves "tangled" in its web.As with books, music and even culture, there are a plethora of categorically distinct web sites. Varying sites dealing with Information and News, Research and Education, Professional Organizations and Membership Institutions and Commerce, Marketing and Sales are some just to name just a few.
Below you will find links to two sites relevant to each respective category that I have visited. Further below, you will find my observations that I gathered while "visiting" each site.

Information & News |
|
I like going to CNN Interactive's site for "just the facts ma'am." CNN Interactive for me, was a great source for the top stories, as well as various features spanning the globe. I find it easier to catch up on the news online rather than to watch it on cable TV, mainly because I live in the dorms... where there is no cable! |

I used to like ESPN Sportszone back in the day. Then, when they became too "commercialized" and started going for the buck, I got a little upset. I thought to myself, "Jeez, they are making so much money... why do they have to charge us avid sports fans for?" Then I thought that business was business, no matter what entity. I still go to ESPN when I want instant, up-to-date scores, but I try not to make it a habit...

Research & Education |

Besides information and news gathering, the Internet can also be used for research. Such is the case for the site I visited, called the "University Of Hawai`i at Manoa Library." I soon discovered that it was a library database and resource center for such topics as Internet Resources, Electronic Library Forms, and much information on our library right here on campus. An interesting feature to this page was that you could link (via Telnet), to the UHCARL system, to look up a book or other library resources.

I really like the concept of Virtual University. This is a virtual, if you will, university. One supposedly reads and learns and gets ejukaytid through the online courses that are offered. I am actually enrolled in two classes at the V.U. and am enjoying discussions and themes thus far. The layout of the page is fairly simple to follow and the page is easy to navigate...

Professional Organizations & Membership Institutions |
|
Prior to visiting the site, I viewed the Toastmasters organization as a very prestigious professional speech organization. Yet, when I viewed the site that represented this "notorious" group, I was amazed. There was only one, simple graphic at the top of the main page, with oversimplified web page design and development. Although the content was there, I felt like I wanted to be a little more impressed with such a group. |
|
My visits to HWG (HTML Writer's Guild) are often a necessity. Being that I am a member of this international "Guild," I want to keep up with the current trends in HTML and the application in real-world use. My favorite section is the "HTML Resources" section. Here, I find graphics, utilities, tutorials, etc. This site helps me a lot. |

Commerce, Marketing & Sales |
|
I like to browse i-Mall often to get the latest updates on shopping trends and products. A popular classified section is here that I like to periodically browse. One of the things I like most about i-Mall, is that it has a "Secure Server" mode, making online transactions, virtually worry free.
|
Land of the best computers are located here. Hehe, I believe I am a little biased but I like to visit Dell Computers home page. And being that I now own a Dell, I must frequent the page to get customer service help as well as keeping up to date with the latest software updates and press releases. Actually, this is where I initially discovered the system that I wanted on their on-line computer configurator.

Yes, those infomercials have made their way to the Internet. Sales, sales, sales. When I visited the Amazing Discoveries site, their main focus was advertising those products that we are so dearingly familiar with, and making the sale. Prices and features hoarded the page of these products and there was the option to add it to a "shopping cart" for later purchase.

Banking & Finance |
|
The Central Pacific Bank site was designed by a friend of mine. He, with his associates, put in hour after hour to create this web presence. I liked the online calculator feature that they had on this page. The CGI helped me to process the information that I had input into the database. From there, it calculated how much home equity I could borrow. |
|
Bank Of Hawai`i was pretty cool too. Interactivity played its role in a fillable table on this page. I made my own table using the data that they had about Hawai`i's economy. I also get information on the Pacific Business Trends of such places as Guam, Palau, Solomon, Fiji, and the Marshall Islands, as well as Hawai`i. |

Games & Recreation |
The Java applet running on the left is from the Earthweb Netris Page. Go ahead... click on the game and start playing. You can choose different 3-D angles and challenge yourself to the game based on the Russian hit video game Tetris. I first heard about this page a few years ago and have just tried it for the first time recently. This online game, utilizing Java technology, is a "gotta try" for any web surfer. |
|
This is the site that leads to the SunnyD Bottle Hunt Page. Here, you experience a type of "Recreation" by searching the web, based on clues, to find Sunny Delight Orange Juice bottles sporadically placed on participating web pages. My page actually got to host a bottle and I got a free T-shirt while I was at it! |

Web Oriented Design, Consulting & Services |
|
I shall be biased once again on observing the webnerds.com site. This is actually a web presence page that two friends and I created. We are involved in the sales of Internet services, but we are also trying to create a web site presence where people of all backgrounds and interests can come to visit. We are working on a music section right now, and will later incorporate other topics of interest. My visit to the site today, tells me there is much more improvement yet to be done if we want to keep our audience. |
|
Timeless Hawai`i is a similar such web site that creates and designs web pages for clients, among other things. Their web page offers a classified section as well. I'm not sure if I want to say too much more. After all, they are competition. Hehe! |
In addition to the above-mentioned sites, there are also what's called E-zines, or Electronic Magazines on the web. There are a number of E-Zines which are primarily for web publishing, but as of late, there are more and more 'zines joining the market who already have a print version of ther magazine.A few examples I can think of are:
WIREDThe main difference between the E-zines and their print version counterpart, is the size. Because the respective businesses don't want to lose their customers to the Internet (no more profit from magazine sales), they tend to keep the "E" versions on the lighter side and make them more visually appealing.
Sports Illustrated
ZD Internet Magazine
Time Magazine
Playboy (so I've heard...)
Rather than providing bulk information of everything covered in their print version, they utilize this multimedia platform by taking advantage of the latest in technology.
What a life!
