I will be analyzing the previous generations' homepages, with my professional insights!! (ha! ha! ha!) In this report I will be looking for the quality, richness, depth, and scholarship that goes into the thoughts of these students, also looking at the ir expanding knowledge of the Internet. Their pages will be analyzed by their creativity, technique, connectivity, integration, and navigational use.
Generation 1:
Since this was the first generation I will cut them some slack. They had no use of Netscape and had to Lynx (which is only in text format). Their pages were primarily simple but very lengthy. The page I found best to give an example of what it was like
was of Ryan Higa. The pages were more like a wordprocessor because of it's simple look. Most of the pages were too lengthy that it made me hesitate to even look through
them. And when I did it was just even more lengthy (thank god I wasn't in this class!). The best page for generation 1 was from Kevin Bogan
Generation 2 & 3:
I decided to combine these two generations because the pages seemed to look similar. I was really surprised that generation 2 was similar to generation 3! They both exhibited animated gifs, table of contents, background color, icons, and links to the
Instructor's homepage and index. They also utilized subheadings and organization better than the first generation. Although they have improved because the use of Netscape and more information they still managed to make their reports unappealing by maki
ng it very lengthy. This is one of the best pages I found. From generation 2 Cynthia Yap. Her page was very clear, effective, and informational overall the best.
Well, being online definitely has given me a new insight of the computer world. I had no idea of that I could even create a homepage. I thought only people who were computer whizzes could create and these were the people who sold their services to priva
te firms. The first time I went online I was lost in cyberspace and wasted so much time that it was a negative reinforcement for me, that going online was dreadful. After viewing several pages the general consensus regarding students attitude the GC is
one of curiosity and excitement. This is because of one first goes on the Web a whole new world exist. With places to go and many things to see, the Web is certainly an exciting experience for the newcomers.
Many students have no quantitative experience with computers and the Web, so when they first encounter Dr. James lab exercises, they are overwhelmed and disarrayed. From reading the past GC's students pages, most students work through and overcome the
ir technophobia in a short time. Michelle Alonzo felt frustrated and wanted to break the computer. Wil Williams wanted to throw the computer out of the window from the sixth
floor of the Porteus Lab. Yes, I can attest to their frustrations because I have been through it also!! But one thing we all found out is perseverance will overcome adversity.
The GC is already a well designed program because of its foundation and design has been well thought through from its inception online in 1992. It's designed in a way to continually flourish and expand with the coming of each new semester. Any good lon
g term program should consist of well trained individuals. Each semester, Psych. 499 students should share their expertise by training the new group of students. This will add a continual transference of computer knowledge from generation to generation.
This will insure the success and quality of GC.
Purpose/Benefits of the Generational Curriculum
To understand the benefits and the purposes of the generational curriculum please read the article written by Dr. Leon James and Dr. Diane Nahl of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Hawaii. Dr. James was searching some kin
d of way for the students to write with authenticity. The GC was designed as a platform for the purpose of improving students writing and communication abilities. Dr. James utilizes the Web to give validation to the students by presenting their works fo
r all to see. This principle gives students a sense of accomplishment. The GC is a ever expanding Super Document grows larger and larger with each new semester of students. The students create their own page, linking their reports and other sites to it
. Former student pages are linked to the new semester pages. As you can tell this process makes the GC a growing education phenomenon on the Web. That's what became of his 1992 class. They were able to go online and publish their reports on the Web.
