Cauble Psy 459 Fall 96 Report 2 Tailgating

Report 2 The Psychology of Tailgating

I think tailgating is definitely an attempt to force one's will over another driver. Berna Collado of Generation Two is a very good example of this theory. When she finds herself being tailgated, she tries to "box-in" the tailgater in an effort to teach them a lesson.

Alan Furukawa had an interesting view on tailgating. He stated that when he is angry, he will sometimes find himself tailgating just to irritate people and make them feel just as bad as he does.

One report that I read was written by Caroline Balatico. She is one of the more considerate drivers on Hawaii's roadways. She stated that when she notices herself tailgating, she will switch lanes so that she does not "irk" the driver in front of her.

The above reports, as well as many other reports I read certainly support the theory that tailgating is an attempt to force one's will over another driver. As tailgaters, we are trying to make the driver in front of us move faster, or get out of the way.

I don't believe that tailgating is fair or ethical. We should not feel the need to force our wishes onto another. I feel that tailgating is a reflection of our society. Sharing our roads is a difficult thing to do. No one person views driving in the same light. Thus, techniques of driving constantly clash. Each driver wants things done their way- if not, force must be used in order to show how it (driving) should be done. This way of thinking leads to the erroneous conclusion that tailgating is justifiable.

My attempt to live a good and rightgeous life would be greatly hindered if I practised the art of tailgating. Many people may consider tailgating harmless and of no great consequence, but the feelings that underlie the overt action of tailgating is what I consider most harmful. The need for control, vengence, and power are morally wrong and have no place in my life. These feeling often accompany the action of tailgating, thus making the act morally and spiritually wrong.
