Report 2: The World Wide Web

What can I look for in the WWW?

Categories in Websites make it easier for the audience member to find exactly what they are looking for. Some categories include information and news, research and education, professional organizations and membership, commerce, marketing, and sales, and games and recreation. Examples of each are provided below.

Information and News

In the Information and News category, examples are newspapers such as our very own Honolulu Star-Bulletin which I enjoyed visiting. I found many interesting sites on that page such as the special programs area. In that section, they have stories that have ongoing updates throughout the week for example. Presently, they have something about the election. I thought it was really interesting because I did not have to keep looking for the back issue that they would have usually have referred to if I were reading the actual news"paper." Also, in the information category, I looked up information on the Hawaii government. What's really interesting is that I found out why the state capitol looks the way it does. If any of you do not know, you should check it out! Also the government incorporates some history with the details and details about the function of each of the bodies of government. I was curious because we just voted...haha. I did not even know what the person who I voted for what voted for to do..haha. Anyways, here was my crash course.

Research and Education

For the Research and Education category, many different possibilities are available for institutions. Websites can update alumni with newsletters or even post up research material that was done by the school. One such a Website is the actual one we are doing for this class. In this Website, students do their assignments for everyone to review. Everything that is to be done is done on their very own Website page. It is easy to see all that the students have to do. All the assignments that has to be done, is to be put up on a Web page of their very own. Also, progress can be easily marked. Without numerous amounts of deadlines, the reports are each to be done on the students own time. In the one day of class that the students are to meet, any questions or complaints are to be brought up in the class. This is a real college class!

In another possibility a local high school student created a home page for his present high school. Mililani High School's website lets viewers see the school. The best part of the page that I saw was the e-mail address page. There were pages for each class that graduated. People could leave their e-mail address so that others could get in touch with them. To my surprise, there were quite a few names and addresses on there.

Professional Organizations and Membership

I'm not quite sure if the one I found for membership quite fits the category but it is definitely something you might want to take a look at. There is a Student Net that you can go to either to look at people's home pages from other schools. The cool thing is that you can post messages up to meet friends, something like personals. Sounds like fun. You have to sign up to get membership though in order to do the personal ads stuff. It's fun to browse around although it takes a long time to load sometimes. Oh yea, just a warning though, I just looked through it, and saw *sigh, sigh* only one college student.

Another place that I found was a Friendship Club page. This page was started by a couple in their mid-20s. It is a much more *older, yay* version of the above. There's a place where you can send in a application and write an ad that would appear online. The addresses are separated by states, so if you are looking for anything in particular, you might be able to find it. Trouble is, this site is fairly new. I think I would even wait awhile before putting my address up. Don't hesitate to look for it in a while though. There's a place for homepages, viewing other people's entries, adding your homepage, and everything. Check it out!

Commerce, Marketing, and Sales

As for the Commerce, Marketing and Sales, people can do their shopping, or do anything that deals with their personal finances, right up on the Web. For instance, I found an Avon page, and a local bank to link to.

While looking at the Avon page, I found a few interesting things. On there, you can find out how to be a representative ot how to get a catalog to order from.

For another site, I bank at the First Hawaiian Bank and was curious about certain services. I did not even know that there was such a thing as the First Hawaiian Bank Web Page. They have really cute graphics of Pat Morita that were done by Deb Aoki. On the page, there is information about all of their services like for example, the College Student Plan. You will also see a map of all the sites of the ATM's and the bank machines all over the state and even in Guam! It is a site worth looking at simply because of the graphics!

Games and Recreation

Games and Recreation was my favorite category. If you do not know me, you will not know that I have tons of Sanrio stuff all over the place. My favorite is the mouse, Choppi. Who's Choppi? He's the mouse Pochacco is always with. Anyhow, visiting this page I got to see all the characters in the Sanrio collection. I was overwhelmed and happy that I found this page...and it even links to Tokyo. How cool!

Another link that I found for this category was a Connect 4 game site. The computer is good at the game, too. The only thing junk is that when you press back, you have to pass back through all of the moves before you can get back to my page...that is if you want to get back to my page...hehehehe!

E-zines

An example of a link to a e-zine is Women's Wire. This site won a top ten award in the I-way 500 of e-zines. It's cool. There's sections on fashion, sports, and women in news. I must say, it is appealing to the eye. Using the e-zines, it's much more easier to skim to the parts that you like, and easy to click to other place to get and even deeper feel for that topic. I found an article on the topic of a female detective. I was even more interested in deeper sources. Lo, and behold, there they were. How perfect! Anyways, I enjoyed this site.

Another e-zine that I came across was Pulse! I was reluctant to try this e-zine to begin with, but it's really a pretty good site. It's weird because I actually wanted to read it after I saw the introduction. Never in some odd years would I open the print magazine. Hah! Although, maybe I can find one that's actually in English. Hmph.

What do I prefer?

If you asked me if I would prefer to read the electronic version or the print version of a magazine, I honestly would say the print version. Although the electronic version is much more easier to read, a print version of anything is more convenient. Using a e-zine, you don't have to constantly flip through pages and pages at a time to find a simple article. You can take a magazine anywhere, but you can not neccessarily do the same with a computer. Also, I am a person who takes forever to make any sort of decision. I am very fickle about choices. Honest! So, if I could design my own comic strip, I could not tell you just how long it would take me to make the decision. So in a way, I prefer to have it all there instead of having to choose.
